Forward Deployed Engineer vs. Solutions Engineer: Key Differences

FDEs commonly own customer-specific implementation through production; Solutions Engineers typically support technical evaluation. Employer duties can overlap, so compare deliverables and accountability.

A Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) commonly builds or integrates software for a customer and carries the work toward production. A Solutions Engineer (SE) commonly helps a prospective customer evaluate technical fit through solution design, demonstrations, and proofs of concept. The clearest difference is usually when the role is accountable for results: production delivery for an FDE, versus technical validation and support for a sale for an SE. Employers do not use the titles consistently, so the job description matters more than the label.

What separates the roles?

Both roles work directly with customers and need to understand technical requirements. Customer contact alone therefore does not distinguish them. Look instead at the role’s place in the customer lifecycle, its deliverables, and whether it owns working software after evaluation.

Dimension Forward Deployed Engineer (common pattern) Solutions Engineer (common pattern)
Lifecycle stage Implementation through deployment and production use Product evaluation and technical validation, often before purchase
Typical deliverables Integrated software or a workflow running in the customer’s environment Demonstrations, proofs of concept, architecture, or solution design
Primary accountability Delivery and customer outcomes after technical implementation Establishing technical fit and supporting a technical win
Production-code ownership Often hands-on implementation and production engineering Varies; may include demos or prototypes, with less consistent production ownership
Potential overlap May participate in presales May stay involved through onboarding or launch

These are common patterns, not a standardized industry taxonomy. FDEnest’s May 28, 2026 comparison describes FDEs as building with a product inside the customer and SEs as helping sell the product, while noting that employers draw the boundary differently. Plank’s role comparison likewise frames the distinction around accountability rather than customer-facing activity.

What does a Forward Deployed Engineer do?

An FDE commonly works on the technical implementation needed to make a product useful in a particular customer’s environment. That can involve building or integrating software and adapting a solution to the customer’s requirements, with work extending toward deployment and production use. The defining signal is not simply writing code; it is responsibility for getting a customer-specific solution working beyond a demonstration or evaluation.

What does a Solutions Engineer do?

An SE commonly helps a customer determine whether a product can meet its technical requirements. The work may include designing a solution, demonstrating capabilities, and building a proof of concept. Its usual center of gravity is the evaluation stage and support for a technical win. Some SEs remain involved after a purchase, but ongoing production ownership is less consistent across the role descriptions.

Do FDEs do presales, and can the roles overlap?

Yes. Some FDE roles include presales or solutions work, and some SE roles extend into onboarding or launch. In a census reported by Plank, 35% of 674 machine-readable FDE job descriptions mentioned presales or solutions work; 20 postings, or 1.5% of that census, combined the titles outright. Plank describes the census as observed September 12, 2026. These are figures from that publisher’s collected FDE postings, not a representative survey of all employers or of the SE market.

Employer naming also varies. An OpenAI careers search page listed Forward Deployed Engineer and Forward Deployed Software Engineer roles across locations and specialties, including healthcare, legal, and government. That listing shows variations in one employer’s role labels; it is not a stable or comprehensive definition of FDE responsibilities, and openings can change.

How to tell which role a job posting describes

Read the responsibilities and success measures, not just the title. Look for evidence of who owns the work after a proof of concept, what gets delivered, and how the employer defines a successful outcome.

  • Production ownership: Does the role implement and deploy production code, integrations, or workflows, or mainly build evaluation-stage demos and prototypes?
  • Post-sale responsibility: Does responsibility continue after the deal closes, and does the role own deployment or production adoption?
  • Presales share: How much of the work supports a prospective customer’s evaluation, and what duties remain after purchase?
  • Success measures: Is the role assessed on technical validation and a technical win, deployment, production use, or another employer-specific outcome?
  • Team and ownership: Which team does the role work with, and does the posting specify engineering ownership, handoff, or implementation responsibility?

A useful shorthand from Plank’s comparison article is: “The distinction that survives is accountability, not activity: if the role’s success is measured at signature, it is a solutions engineer; if it is measured in production, it is an FDE.” Treat that as the article’s summary, not a universal rule: some jobs deliberately combine both stages.

What the titles do not tell you

The available comparisons and listings do not establish standardized compensation ranges, quota arrangements, educational requirements, travel expectations, or promotion paths for either role. Those details should be checked in the specific posting and with the employer rather than inferred from the title.
