Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE): What the Role Really Does

A Forward Deployed Engineer builds and deploys customer-specific software while working close to users. Here’s how the role differs from adjacent jobs and what to check before applying.

A forward deployed engineer (FDE) works directly with a customer to understand an operational problem, build or integrate software for it, and deliver that solution in the customer’s environment. The job can combine software engineering with customer discovery and production ownership; it does not show that traditional software engineering is dying. “Forward deployed” describes a customer-embedded way of working, and the exact responsibilities depend on the employer and team.

What is a Forward Deployed Engineer?

An FDE takes a customer’s real-world problem from investigation toward a working software solution. That can mean figuring out what users need, examining the customer’s data and systems, choosing an approach, building an application or integration, and iterating after deployment.

Palantir uses the title Forward Deployed Software Engineer (FDSE). Its current London listing describes small-team work spanning customer conversations, architecture and design, large-scale data work, custom applications, LLM workflows, production delivery, and relationships with stakeholders from end users to executives. A separate New Grad Commercial listing describes similar work and says graduates can take on meaningful ownership from day one. Palantir’s London listing and New Grad Commercial listing are examples of one employer’s roles, not a universal job specification.

In plain terms, the work often follows a loop: identify a high-value workflow, understand the available data and operational constraints, build the software or integration, put it into use, and adjust it based on what happens. An analysis of enterprise deployment describes a similar progression from workflow selection and constraint discovery to production integrations. That deployment perspective is not a specification for every FDE job.

How is an FDE different from a product engineer or consultant?

The titles overlap across companies, so compare the work rather than relying on labels. Three questions help distinguish the role:

  • Who owns production delivery? Does the engineer write and ship code that is used in production, and who handles follow-up after launch? A role centered on advice, demonstrations, or presales may involve technical expertise without the same responsibility for deployed software.
  • Is the output customer-specific or shared? An FDE may enable multiple capabilities for one customer’s systems and workflow. A product engineer more often builds a reusable capability intended for many customers. This is a useful distinction, not a universal taxonomy. The Forward Deployed’s role guide discusses this contrast.
  • What does customer contact involve? Ask how much time goes to discovery and stakeholder conversations, whether work happens on-site, and how often travel is expected. These conditions vary by employer, account, and team.

That also answers a common question: is FDE work consulting, sales engineering, or support with a different name? It can share activities with each, but the important distinction is what the role is accountable for. Ask whether you will build and own production software, or primarily advise, demonstrate, or troubleshoot someone else’s product.

What skills and day-to-day tradeoffs should candidates expect?

Technical range

Customer problems rarely arrive already shaped like a clean engineering ticket. The work can move among data integration, application development, architecture, and deployment. Palantir’s cited London listing asks for proficiency in one or more programming languages and experience developing secure applications, including attention to access control and privacy. Those are requirements in that posting, not universal requirements for all FDE openings.

Problem-solving and communication

FDEs need to clarify an ambiguous problem, break it into workable pieces, and communicate with both technical and nontechnical stakeholders. For AI-focused work, familiarity with LLMs may be useful; a career guide presents these as preparation themes rather than a standard hiring checklist. The guide’s career advice should be read as general guidance, not as a promise that a particular employer screens for every listed skill.

Work style and travel

The role may suit engineers who enjoy ambiguity, rapid customer feedback, and accountability for outcomes. The corresponding costs can include frequent context switching, customer-driven schedules, travel, and more integration with an existing platform than work on a shared system from scratch. One Palantir London listing says travel may be 25–50%, depending on team and location; that range applies to that posting, not FDE roles generally. Ask a prospective employer how travel is calculated, how often engineers visit customers, and what happens after a solution goes live.

Does the FDE title mean traditional software engineering is dying?

No. The evidence supports a narrower conclusion: FDE is a distinct, customer-embedded form of engineering that combines technical delivery with closer involvement in a customer’s operations. The work described in the job listings still includes architecture, application development, data work, and shipping software. What changes is the setting and scope of responsibility—not the existence of software engineering itself.

Nor does the title alone guarantee that a job involves substantial coding or production ownership. Read the listing for concrete deliverables, then ask who writes and maintains shipped code, how much time goes to building versus meetings or support, and how deployment and follow-up work.

What is known about FDE salaries and demand?

The available evidence does not establish an authoritative, representative salary or labor-demand benchmark. FDE Jobs’ July 5, 2026 guide reports a median US base salary of about $173,000 and claims job postings grew by more than 800% year over year. The guide does not provide enough methodological detail to treat either figure as independently verified or representative. They are that publisher’s estimates and claim, not a reliable basis for assuming what a particular role pays or how quickly the field is growing.
