If matchmaking or another relevant service is down, wait for Epic to resolve it and try again. If services are operational, follow the official connection or device troubleshooting steps for your platform. Epic describes the numbered matchmaking errors as usually related to server maintenance or a network connection issue; the generic message alone does not identify which one is affecting you.
What Fortnite matchmaking error #1 means
Epic’s generic Error #1 message says: “Weird. We couldn’t connect to the match.” It means the game could not connect you to a match, but it does not by itself prove that your home network, device, or Epic’s servers are at fault. Epic says matchmaking errors #1, #2, and #3 occur mainly because of server maintenance or a network connection issue.

How to troubleshoot the generic error
- Check Epic’s service status. Visit Epic’s Fortnite matchmaking error support article and use its status-page link to check for a relevant outage or maintenance. If a service is affected, monitor updates and try again after it recovers rather than repeatedly changing local settings.
- If no relevant outage is reported, use the official troubleshooting that matches your situation. Epic’s article links to general connection troubleshooting and guidance for disabling background applications. Follow the instructions for your platform and symptoms; the generic error does not establish one universal device or network fix.
- Report the issue if it persists. Submit a Fortnite bug report in-game. Epic also directs players to its official Fortnite Status account for updates.
Check the full message before using generic fixes
A number in brackets or tournament-specific wording can point to a different situation. Epic lists these variants:

- Error #1 [1.1.14] during a tournament: The Battle Bus has already departed. This is a timing or eligibility situation, not evidence of a general connection fault.
- Error #1 [1.1.1C-3.4.7FFFFFFF]: Epic labels this an unknown error.
- Error #1 [1.1.2]: A separate Epic notice describes an issue affecting some players and suggests trying a different playlist and re-queueing as a possible workaround. The notice may change, so check current Fortnite Status before relying on it.
For the exact wording and current guidance, consult Epic’s official matchmaking error article. Match the instructions to the full code rather than assuming every Error #1 has the same cause.

When to avoid drastic network changes
Epic’s generic guidance does not establish DNS changes, port forwarding, reinstalling Fortnite, or buying networking equipment as universal fixes for Error #1. Start with service status, then use the official connection or device steps that fit your platform. If those steps do not resolve it, report the error in-game.
