Yes. Fortnite accepts external controllers on mobile devices, Windows PC, PlayStation and Xbox consoles, and Nintendo Switch. A Bluetooth gamepad works when both the controller model and host device support it; Epic does not guarantee compatibility with every accessory. Pair the controller in the host device’s Bluetooth settings first, then select or customize Fortnite’s controller layout.
Does Fortnite support Bluetooth controllers?
Epic Games allows external controllers in Fortnite, and its current player-support guidance says using one will not result in an account ban. Compatibility is not universal: Epic says it cannot test every controller and that some models may not work with a particular phone, tablet, computer or console. Check the controller manufacturer’s compatibility information for your exact model and host device.
Fortnite is available on Android, iPhone and iPad, Windows PC, PlayStation 4 and 5 families, Xbox One and Series families, and Nintendo Switch families.
Where Bluetooth controllers work
| Platform | Bluetooth-controller support | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Android phones and tablets | External controllers are permitted when the device and controller are compatible. | Epic does not publish a universal compatibility list. |
| iPhone and iPad | Apple supports pairing Xbox, PlayStation and other Bluetooth controllers. | Buttons, lights, audio-jack behavior and other features can vary by controller and app. |
| Windows PC | Fortnite supports controllers, including Bluetooth gamepads recognized by Windows. | Use the controller-platform selector so on-screen prompts match the intended layout. |
| PlayStation 4/5 | Supported Fortnite platforms; compatible wireless or wired gamepads can be used. | These are among the platforms that support Fortnite local multiplayer. |
| Xbox One/Series | Supported Fortnite platforms; compatible wireless or wired gamepads can be used. | These are among the platforms that support Fortnite local multiplayer. |
| Nintendo Switch | Fortnite is supported and compatible controllers can be used. | Epic excludes Switch from Fortnite local multiplayer/split-screen support. |
How to connect a Bluetooth controller to Fortnite
- Enter pairing mode. Hold your controller’s Bluetooth or pairing button until its indicator shows that it is discoverable. The exact button combination depends on the model.
- Pair it with the host device. Open the phone, tablet or computer’s Bluetooth settings, select the controller from the device list and wait until the operating system reports it as connected. Apple documents this process for Xbox, PlayStation and other Bluetooth controllers on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV and Apple Vision Pro.
- Launch Fortnite after pairing. Starting the game after the operating system recognizes the controller gives Fortnite the best chance to detect it.
- Open Fortnite’s menu. On PC or Mac, press Esc; on PlayStation, press Options; on Xbox, press the Menu button; on Switch, press +; on Android, open the in-game menu and choose the gear icon.
- Open Settings and Controller Mapping. Choose Old School, Quick Builder, Combat Pro, Builder Pro or Custom, then apply the selection.
- Set the controller platform on PC. Select the platform identity that matches your gamepad so Fortnite uses the expected button prompts, such as Xbox-style ABXY or PlayStation symbols.
Using Xbox or PlayStation controllers on mobile
iPhone and iPad
Apple supports wireless Xbox, PlayStation and other Bluetooth controllers on iPhone and iPad. Fortnite can use the connected gamepad, but do not assume every feature behaves exactly as it does on a console. Apple notes that button mapping, controller lights, headset or audio-jack behavior and other capabilities vary by controller and app.

Android
Epic permits external controllers on Android, subject to compatibility between the specific controller and device. Pair through Android’s Bluetooth settings before opening Fortnite, then configure the layout under Settings → Controller Mapping.
Cloud gaming on a phone or tablet
Fortnite’s mobile options also include Xbox Cloud Gaming, NVIDIA GeForce NOW and Amazon Luna. A Bluetooth controller can provide input to the streaming session, but cloud play depends on a high-speed, stable, low-latency internet connection. A controller cannot compensate for network delay or an unstable stream.

Does Fortnite support Bluetooth controllers on PC?
Yes. Pair the controller with Windows or macOS first, start Fortnite, and use Settings → Controller Mapping. PC Fortnite also exposes a controller-platform selector; choose the matching platform identity to keep button prompts understandable. If the game sees keyboard input instead, close other controller-mapping utilities and reconnect the gamepad before relaunching Fortnite.
Does Fortnite split-screen work with two Bluetooth controllers?
Fortnite local multiplayer (split-screen) is limited to PlayStation and Xbox consoles. Two compatible controllers may be used there, subject to the console, game mode and account requirements shown in Fortnite. Epic specifically excludes mobile devices, Nintendo Switch and PC from Fortnite split-screen support, so pairing two Bluetooth controllers on those platforms does not create a local split-screen session.

Controller connected but Fortnite does not recognize it
Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm the operating system sees it. If the controller is absent from Bluetooth settings or immediately disconnects, fix pairing, charging or hardware issues before opening Fortnite.
- Reconnect before launching the game. Quit Fortnite completely, disconnect the controller, pair it again in the host settings, and then relaunch Fortnite.
- Remove competing pairings. Temporarily disconnect the gamepad from other nearby phones, tablets, PCs or consoles that may reclaim the Bluetooth connection.
- Update both sides. Install available operating-system updates and the controller manufacturer’s firmware or companion-app updates.
- Check the exact model. Epic says it cannot test every external device and directs accessory compatibility questions to the manufacturer. A controller can be Bluetooth-capable yet still be incompatible with a particular host or game implementation.
- Test a known-supported alternative. If another compatible Xbox or PlayStation controller works on the same host, the original model is likely the compatibility problem rather than your Fortnite account.
- Try wired connection where available. A USB cable can help distinguish Bluetooth pairing problems from broader controller-detection problems, although wired support also depends on the host and controller.
Choosing a controller for Fortnite
| Decision point | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Host compatibility | Look for explicit support for Android, iPhone/iPad, Windows PC or your console family. |
| Connection method | Confirm Bluetooth support if you need wireless mobile or PC play; console-specific wireless modes may not work on other hosts. |
| Button layout | Xbox controllers use ABXY labels; PlayStation controllers use symbol buttons. Fortnite’s prompts can depend on the selected platform identity. |
| Ergonomics | Choose a standard gamepad for desk or sofa play, or a telescopic mobile grip when the phone itself is the screen. |
| Extra features | Vibration, headset connections, paddles and motion controls vary by controller and app, especially on Apple devices. |
| Support route | Epic handles Fortnite settings, but the controller manufacturer is the appropriate source for model-specific compatibility and firmware help. |
What to expect from Bluetooth play
Bluetooth removes the cable but can add another point of failure: pairing state, battery level, interference and host compatibility all matter. For competitive play, use the most reliable connection your setup supports and keep the controller charged. On cloud-streamed Fortnite, internet latency remains separate from Bluetooth input latency.
