FortiGate is a natural fit if you want a firewall integrated with Fortinet’s networking, SD-WAN, VPN/ZTNA, and FortiGuard services. Cisco Firepower is worth considering if your team already works with Cisco or prefers its cloud, on-premises, or on-box management options. The practical choice depends on the exact appliance, security features enabled, management approach, subscriptions, support, and deployment cost—not a single headline throughput number.
Which models should a small business compare?
Both vendors offer physical appliances aimed at small-business or small-office use. Fortinet’s small-business lineup includes models from the FortiGate 30G through the 200G, including the 50G. Cisco positions its Firepower 1000 family for small and midsize businesses and describes the desktop Firepower 1010 as tailored to small businesses. The right comparison is between specific models sized for your traffic and required features, not the two product families in the abstract.

How do the published specifications compare?
The figures below are vendor specifications, not results from a controlled head-to-head test. Throughput labels and test conditions differ, so they should help you frame sizing questions rather than rank the brands.

|---|---|---|
| Fortinet FortiGate 50G | Fortinet’s small-business page lists five GE RJ45 interfaces and 1,100 Mbps threat-protection throughput. Its June 2025 product matrix lists 1.1 Gbps threat-protection and 1.25 Gbps NGFW throughput under the matrix’s enterprise-mix labels. | Confirm the throughput metric and test mix for the exact configuration and features you will use. |
| Cisco Firepower 1010 | Cisco lists 0.9 Gbps firewall throughput, 900 Mbps IPS throughput, 0.4 Gbps IPsec VPN throughput, up to 75 VPN peers, and eight RJ45 ports. | Confirm the current hardware and software configuration, and size for the security functions and VPN use you need. |
| Cisco Firepower 1120 | Cisco lists 2.3 Gbps firewall throughput, 2.6 Gbps IPS throughput, 1.2 Gbps IPsec VPN throughput, and up to 150 VPN peers. | Check that the additional capacity, interfaces, and licensing fit your requirements and growth plans. |
The FortiGate 50G’s threat-protection figure and Firepower 1010’s firewall and IPS figures do not establish which device is faster: the metrics and test mixes are not directly equivalent. Ask vendors or resellers for sizing based on your WAN capacity, traffic mix, and the protections you intend to enable. Compare the resulting expected throughput under those conditions, not just a headline firewall number.

What should you evaluate before choosing?
Traffic, ports, and room to grow
- Start with current and expected WAN speeds, the number of users and sites, and the kinds of traffic your business handles.
- Count required interfaces, including uplinks and any PoE needs, rather than assuming port totals are interchangeable.
- Ask for throughput estimates with your chosen security features enabled. A firewall’s capacity can differ across firewall, IPS, NGFW, and threat-protection metrics.
- Allow for growth, remote connections, and branch traffic so the appliance is not sized only for today’s usage.
Remote access and branch networking
Fortinet highlights SD-WAN, VPN, and ZTNA alongside firewall capabilities. Cisco publishes VPN throughput and peer limits for Firepower 1000 models. Map your needs—such as remote staff, site-to-site links, and branch connectivity—to the specific product features and licenses required. Do not infer that a family-level feature mention includes every capability or subscription in a particular purchase.
Management and team expertise
Cisco describes cloud-delivered, on-premises, and on-box management choices for Firepower 1000. Fortinet promotes FortiGate Cloud and centralized management alongside its security and networking capabilities. Operational fit depends on how your staff will configure, monitor, update, and troubleshoot the device, as well as the systems your business already uses. If your team has established expertise with one vendor, that is a legitimate fit consideration—not proof that its appliance is universally easier.

Security subscriptions, support, and total cost
FortiGuard services are offered a la carte and in bundles, so identify which protections you need and what the selected bundle includes. Cisco’s Firepower 1010 license guide lists Essentials as required and includes IPS, Malware Defense, URL Filtering, and Secure Client as license categories. Cisco ordering information describes threat-service components with one-, three-, and five-year terms. Confirm which services and term apply to the exact hardware SKU and quote.
No comparable current transaction prices or total-cost quotes are established here, so there is no sound basis for calling either vendor cheaper. Compare hardware, subscriptions, management, support, installation, and renewal terms together. Cisco’s Small Business Edition overview describes a specific hardware-plus-software offer; verify with Cisco or a reseller whether that offer, SKU, and included services are still available in your region.

How to make the decision
- Document the requirement. Record WAN speed, expected traffic growth, interfaces and PoE needs, remote-access and branch requirements, and the security protections you expect to enable.
- Shortlist exact appliances. Consider appropriate FortiGate models and Cisco Firepower 1000 models, rather than treating either product family as a single configuration.
- Request configuration-specific sizing. Ask each vendor or reseller to estimate performance with your intended features enabled and to explain the metric and test conditions behind the estimate.
- Compare management and licensing. Identify who will operate the firewall, which management option fits your environment, which subscriptions are needed, and how long each subscription lasts.
- Compare full deployment quotes. Include hardware, licenses, support, management, installation, and renewals. Verify regional availability and included services for the exact SKU.
When each firewall may fit
FortiGate may be a better fit when
- You want to evaluate firewall security together with Fortinet networking, SD-WAN, VPN/ZTNA, and FortiGuard services.
- Your business already uses Fortinet products or your staff is more familiar with Fortinet administration.
- A particular FortiGate model meets your port, capacity, subscription, and management requirements at an acceptable quoted total cost.
Cisco Firepower may be a better fit when
- Your team already has Cisco expertise or an existing Cisco environment to consider.
- You value the choice among cloud-delivered, on-premises, and on-box management for Firepower 1000.
- A particular Firepower model and its required licenses meet your capacity, VPN, interface, support, and cost requirements.
These are conditional fit judgments, not promises of better security or lower cost. The choice should follow the needs of your environment and the configuration-specific quote.
