The cockpit story is a Google Cloud-reported 2026 demonstration, not evidence that every Formula E car has an AI assistant onboard. A frequently cited race-location data center belongs to Formula 1, not Formula E.
How does Formula E use AI during a race?
Formula E’s AI is not one system doing everything. The documented projects process data in different places for different people: a phone running AI locally in a cockpit demonstration, cloud tools for driver analysis, and digital products for broadcasters and fans. Their inputs, timing and evidence status differ.

Does Formula E have an AI assistant in the cockpit?
What happened at Goodwood
Google Cloud’s September 2, 2026 account describes Dan Ticktum’s Goodwood Hillclimb attempt in a Formula E Gen4 car. Google says a standard Pixel 10 Pro XL running Android was mounted on the dashboard. Gemma and Gemini Nano processed telemetry locally, while offline speech recognition supported real-time coaching. The reported telemetry sampling rate was 100 Hz.

According to Google Cloud, the system did not need a persistent internet connection for critical decisions and the cockpit was air-gapped during the run. Google describes an AI-agent handoff to the cloud after the run for downstream media and engineering analysis. Its statement that the arrangement ensured “total data sovereignty and security” is the vendor’s characterization of this demonstration, not an independently validated security assessment.
What the demonstration does not show
The account documents a particular trial; it does not establish that every Formula E race car carries a Pixel, Gemma, Gemini Nano or an onboard AI coach as standard equipment. Nor does it independently establish performance or safety benefits under regular race conditions. The phone’s inclusion identifies the device used in this demonstration, not a recommendation for motorsport use.

What is Formula E’s Driver Agent?
Driver Agent is distinct from the Goodwood cockpit trial. In a March 25, 2025 account, Google Cloud describes it as a cloud-backed tool using Vertex AI and Gemini to analyze racing-simulator and Formula E data. Its stated inputs include lap times, speed, braking, acceleration, G-force, downforce, latitude and longitude, and steering.

Google Cloud says the tool was developed with Formula E collaboration and used with More than Equal development drivers. That is a cloud analysis workflow, not the local cockpit processing described at Goodwood.

Why the tool needs data retrieval
A conversational AI tool needs access to the relevant telemetry and race results to answer a specific question reliably; a model’s general training alone is not a substitute for those records. Google Cloud’s historical account of a 2023 Formula E project illustrates this with a question such as, “What was the exit speed from turn 1?” The project combined race and telemetry data behind a conversational interface for drivers and fans.
What AI tools can broadcasters and fans use?
Google Cloud Strategy Agent
Formula E’s current Google Cloud partner page identifies Google Cloud as its Principal AI Partner and describes Gemini integrations across operations. It presents the live broadcast Strategy Agent as a source of tailored insights, predictions and explanations. The same page says AI modeling and event digital twins may help simulate and optimize site builds, potentially reducing on-site reconnaissance and heavy equipment transport. Formula E does not quantify a realized reduction there, so this is a stated potential benefit rather than a measured carbon result.

Infosys-powered Race Centre
Formula E’s March 20, 2026 announcement describes the Infosys Topaz-powered Race Centre, a fan-facing service with AI commentary, weather and race-control updates, ATTACK MODE and PITBOOST tracking, driver event timelines, and post-race reports. Formula E says its agentic data orchestration layer integrates over 1.5 million data points across each race. That figure is the organization’s published description, not an independently audited measurement.

Where does Formula E store and analyze telemetry?
The documented examples point to more than one arrangement: Google Cloud describes local processing on the phone for critical decisions during the Goodwood trial, followed by cloud handoff afterward; its Driver Agent account describes uploading, preprocessing, storing and querying simulator and telemetry data. The broadcast and Race Centre descriptions concern fan-facing products and integrated race information. These sources do not establish one universal Formula E telemetry architecture or identify a dedicated traveling Formula E data center.
Does Formula E use a mobile or traveling data center?
The sources reviewed do not establish that Formula E operates a traveling data center. The specific data center account often used in this context is about Formula 1: AWS describes data gathered at an F1 race location being sent to the F1 Media & Technology Centre, which hosts a data center, then passed through an F1 data hub and on to AWS for processing. That is an F1 architecture, not a Formula E specification.
AWS also says each Formula 1 car has 300 sensors generating more than 1.1 million telemetry data points per second; the current AWS page does not state a year for that figure. Those numbers apply to Formula 1 alone and should not be used to characterize Formula E cars or infrastructure.
