Former Knoxville Police Chief Phil Keith says the images from Colleen Slemmer’s 1995 murder have never left him. “I’ll remember this case to the day I die,” he told Fox News Digital on Thursday. His recollections have resurfaced after Christa Pike, convicted in Slemmer’s killing, survived a lethal-injection attempt on September 30, 2026.
What Keith remembers about Slemmer’s murder
Slemmer was 19 and a student at the Knoxville Job Corps Center when she was murdered in January 1995. Pike, then 18, and fellow student Tadaryl Shipp were convicted in the killing. Keith was leading the Knoxville Police Department during that period.
In the interview reported by Fox News Digital, Keith described the crime-scene images as “as vivid today as the day I saw them.” He added: “All I have to do is shut my eyes, and I can see everything.”
Keith also said the department did not have therapy or counseling services for staff at the time, and that he wished it had. His remarks are a personal account of the case’s effect on him; they do not establish the psychological condition of every investigator who worked on it.

Why the case returned to attention in 2026
Pike was scheduled to be executed in Tennessee on September 30, 2026. She survived after two doses of lethal drugs and was hospitalized. In a Friday statement cited by Fox News Digital, her attorneys said she remained critically ill, unconscious, intubated and receiving ventilator assistance. That description reflects the attorneys’ account at the time; it is not a final medical report.
The attempt renewed attention to Slemmer’s death and convictions. Local coverage reported grief and anger from Slemmer’s family and Keith after Pike survived. The renewed focus should not obscure the person at the center of the original case: Slemmer, a 19-year-old student whose life was taken.

What Tennessee said would happen next
The Associated Press reported that Governor Bill Lee ordered a comprehensive third-party review of the execution and said Tennessee’s remaining scheduled execution would not take place in 2026. Lee described carrying out a sentence as a serious state responsibility, saying it must be done legally, constitutionally and effectively.
The reporting available as of October 3, 2026, does not establish the final medical outcome for Pike, the cause of the failed execution, or the eventual findings of the state’s review. No conclusion about Pike’s ultimate legal situation follows from the announcement that another scheduled execution would not occur that year.

Why Keith’s account matters—and what it cannot show
Keith’s comments put a former police chief’s first-person memory alongside renewed public attention to the case. They also point to his regret that counseling was not available to the department at the time. They should be understood as his experience, not as a formal finding about the long-term effects on the whole investigative team. The available reporting does not provide an independent study of investigator trauma or a department-wide assessment of what support staff received.
The Associated Press, citing the Death Penalty Information Center, reported that 18 women had been executed in the United States since capital punishment was reinstated in 1976—about 1% of all executions. That figure is AP’s reported statistic, not an independently verified count here.
