Solana requires data-bearing accounts to maintain a minimum balance, and closing an eligible token account transfers its lamports to a destination chosen by the authorized signer. That balance is recoverable only when the account meets its closure requirements; it is not a guaranteed payout.
Why a token account can hold SOL after its tokens are gone
Solana stores account state in accounts. Each account has a lamports balance and, where applicable, a data field. One SOL equals 1,000,000,000 lamports. Accounts that store data need a minimum balance tied to the amount of data they hold.

Solana’s account documentation explains that ongoing rent collection is disabled, though the runtime and RPC terminology still calls the required amount the “rent-exempt minimum.” The balance functions as refundable storage: it can be recovered when the account is closed. Wallet account and token account are not the same
Your wallet’s main account and a token account are separate on-chain accounts. A token account tracks a particular token balance; its SOL-denominated lamports are separate from the token amount displayed by a wallet. Past token activity may leave a token account with no tokens but still holding its minimum balance. Solana’s guide to reading from the network

Closing an eligible account clears it and transfers its lamports to a destination specified in the close instruction. The amount depends on the account’s actual balance and whether it can be closed. Official documentation does not establish a typical recovery amount, and not every wallet necessarily has an account to reclaim.
What must be true before an account can close
- Standard token account: Its token balance must be zero. The account owner or its close authority must authorize the close instruction.
- Wrapped SOL account: This is an exception to the zero-token requirement; closing it can reclaim the underlying SOL.
- Token extensions: Some extensions may impose additional closure checks.

Who receives the lamports?
The person or wallet that originally paid to create an associated token account does not automatically receive its balance when it is closed. The authorized signer chooses the destination account in the close instruction. Check that destination carefully before signing: the transaction sends the lamports there, not necessarily back to the account that funded creation. Solana Program Library Token documentation

- Confirm which token account is being closed and what lamport balance it holds.
- Check whether it contains tokens. For a standard account, closing requires a zero token balance; disposing of tokens is a separate choice, not just a recovery step.
- Verify the destination account shown in the transaction.
- Make sure the signing wallet is the owner or close authority, and consider whether an extension imposes additional requirements.
Closing is an on-chain transaction, so review the transaction details in your wallet before authorizing it. The cited protocol documentation describes the account rules; it does not establish that any particular wallet interface offers a recovery feature or how that interface presents transaction fees.
