If you’ve forgotten the administrator password, first identify whether you sign in with a Microsoft account or a local account, then use that account’s recovery route. A Windows reset is a last resort: it reinstalls Windows and can remove apps, settings, or personal files, but it does not reveal the old password. If the device is encrypted, you may also need its BitLocker recovery key to access data.
Choose recovery based on the account you use to sign in
“Administrator password” can mean the password for a Microsoft account or a local Windows account. It may also be confused with a Windows Hello PIN. These are different credentials, and recovering the account is not the same as resetting Windows. The steps and available labels can vary by Windows version, device configuration, and whether a PC is managed.
| Situation | First recovery route | What it targets |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft account | Verify your identity and reset the account password | Access to the existing Microsoft account |
| Local account | Use sign-in security questions, a previously created password reset disk, or another accessible administrator account | The local Windows account password |
| Forgotten PIN | Use “I forgot my PIN” if available, or sign in with the password and reset the PIN in Settings | The Windows Hello PIN, not the account password |
| Account recovery unavailable | Consider Reset this PC or reinstalling Windows after checking backup and encryption risks | Windows installation, not recovery of the old password |
Microsoft account password
At the sign-in screen, select I forgot my password or the available web sign-in option. You can also begin recovery from another browser using Microsoft’s forgotten Microsoft account password instructions. Microsoft asks you to verify your identity using an offered security contact method, such as an email address or phone number.
If you cannot use any offered verification method, follow Microsoft’s account sign-in help and recovery guidance. Do not expect support staff to bypass verification: Microsoft says support agents cannot send password-reset links or access and change account details.

Local account password
At the Windows sign-in screen, select the password sign-in option, choose Reset password, and answer the security questions configured for that account. If you created a password reset disk before being locked out, choose Use a password reset disk. Microsoft documents these and other local-account routes in its local account password guidance.
If another administrator account is already accessible on the same PC, sign in to it and use Windows account settings to reset the local account password. This route, like security questions or a reset disk, is intended to restore account access without rebuilding Windows.
Forgotten PIN
A PIN is not interchangeable with an account password. Microsoft’s PIN guidance says that I forgot my PIN at sign-in is available for Microsoft accounts, not local accounts. If the option is absent, sign in with your password and change the PIN in Settings. If both the PIN and password are forgotten, recover the password through the matching account route first.
What a password reset disk can—and cannot—do
A password reset disk is an advance-preparation tool for a local account, not a general-purpose USB recovery trick. Microsoft’s instructions for creating one require setting it up while signed in to the local account. Microsoft accounts do not use this disk-based password-reset method.

A recovery drive or Windows installation USB serves a different purpose: it can help repair or reinstall Windows, with possible data-loss and encryption consequences.

Microsoft’s Reset your PC feature reinstalls Windows. Microsoft’s instruction before starting is: “Back up important files before you begin.” Back up what you can while you still have access to files, and review the reset choice before confirming it.
- Keep my files: preserves personal files but removes apps and settings. It is not a guarantee that every file or configuration will remain intact.
- Remove everything: removes personal files, apps, and settings. Its clean-data option is intended to make removed files harder to recover when selling, donating, or recycling the PC; Microsoft says it is not an industry- or government-grade erasure standard.
- Cloud download: obtains a fresh Windows copy.
- Local reinstall: uses files already on the PC and may not include the latest updates.
You can start a reset in Settings when signed in, or from Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE) when Windows will not start normally. Microsoft’s Windows recovery options guide places less disruptive repair options ahead of reset for general PC problems. Reset should be an escalation, not a password-recovery shortcut.
Find the BitLocker or Device Encryption key first
If Windows Recovery Environment asks for a BitLocker recovery key, the key may be essential to access encrypted data. Microsoft describes it as a 48-digit number. Check the Microsoft account associated with the device, a work or school account or IT department, a printed copy, or a USB drive where the key may have been saved. See Microsoft’s BitLocker recovery key guidance.

Microsoft says it cannot retrieve, provide, or recreate a lost BitLocker key. If the key is unavailable and the change that triggered recovery cannot be undone, Microsoft says the device may need to be reset using Windows recovery options. A reset may not restore access to encrypted personal data.
Do not assume encryption is absent just because the PC runs Windows Home. Microsoft’s Device Encryption overview explains that encryption can turn on automatically during setup with a Microsoft or work/school account, with the recovery key attached to that account. Device Encryption is available on more devices than BitLocker Drive Encryption, including some Windows Home devices.
If reinstalling Windows is necessary
Reinstallation is different from recovering a password: it rebuilds Windows rather than unlocking the existing account. Microsoft describes starting recovery from Windows RE and using a recovery drive, generic Windows installation media, or manufacturer recovery media. A manufacturer image typically includes device-specific drivers and factory apps that generic Microsoft installation media may omit.
If you can access Windows, back up important files before starting. If the device is encrypted, locate its recovery key before entering recovery tools. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s current reset guidance; the instructions generally cover Windows 10 and Windows 11, but labels and available options may differ by version and device.

When the PC belongs to work or school
Contact your organization’s IT department before resetting or reinstalling a managed PC. IT may have recovery tools, control the BitLocker key, and enforce configuration that a personal-device recovery path cannot address. Avoid using consumer recovery media or reset choices without authorization from the organization.
