Apple says macOS will add stricter controls around Full Disk Access, a permission that can let an app reach files, email, messages and browsing history. The company has not yet disclosed the new prompt, entitlement rules or release date, but says granting this unusually broad access will require “very explicit user action.”
What Apple announced
In an Apple Developer News post dated October 2, 2026, Apple said Full Disk Access was originally designed to help backup software work correctly. It now says some developers use the permission in ways that may expose sensitive information without users fully understanding the consequences.

Apple’s planned response is “additional controls” so that people who genuinely want to grant the permission must take “very explicit user action.” The announcement describes a policy direction, not a finished user interface or a detailed rollout plan.

What Full Disk Access can expose
Full Disk Access can bypass ordinary macOS privacy boundaries for an app that receives it. Apple specifically says the permission can expose:

- Files stored on the Mac
- Email and mail databases
- Messages
- Browsing history
That does not mean every app with the permission has accessed all of those categories, or that every AI agent is misusing it. It means the permission creates the technical possibility of reaching data that macOS normally protects more closely.
Why AI agents raise the stakes
Traditional applications usually request access for a defined task, such as backing up data or indexing files. Desktop AI agents are being built to work across multiple applications and to operate continuously or semi-autonomously. A single broad permission can therefore give an agent a much wider field of action than a one-purpose utility.

Apple warned that “as AI agents become increasingly capable and autonomous, the risks associated with this level of access will grow substantially.” Reporting on the announcement pointed to Meta’s Muse and OpenAI’s Dots as examples of desktop-agent products. TechCrunch also reported that the announcement followed a disputed claim that Meta’s Muse knew the contents of private messages. Apple’s statement is broader than that incident and does not accuse every agent, or any named vendor, of improperly accessing private data.

What Mac users should do now
Until Apple publishes the implementation details, treat Full Disk Access as a high-impact permission rather than a routine setup checkbox.
- Open System Settings and review the apps listed under Privacy & Security > Full Disk Access.
- For each app, identify the specific feature that needs this level of access. If the purpose is unclear, leave access disabled until you can verify it.
- Remove permission from software you no longer use or no longer trust, then check whether its core function still works.
- Before approving an AI agent, examine what it can do across files and other apps, whether it runs continuously, and what the vendor says about logging, retention and third-party processing.
- On a managed Mac, ask the administrator how privacy permissions are controlled and whether the agent is approved for the organization’s data.
These steps are practical precautions based on the scope Apple described; they are not a new Apple-mandated procedure.

There is no announced date. Apple’s October 2, 2026 statement does not name a macOS version, provide a beta schedule or explain how existing grants will be handled.
