You generally can’t sign in to a router’s admin page without its admin password. If it’s your router or you’re authorized to manage it, check the router’s label and exact-model instructions, try any recovery option already set up, or follow the manufacturer’s reset procedure as a last resort. The admin password is different from the Wi-Fi password used to connect devices.
First, identify which password you need
A router has separate credentials for two different jobs:

- Wi-Fi password: lets your phone, computer, or other device join the wireless network.
- Router admin password: lets an administrator change settings such as the Wi-Fi name, password, and security options.
Being connected to Wi-Fi does not necessarily give you access to the admin page. If you can join the network but cannot manage its settings, you need the router’s admin login or an authorized recovery method.

Connect to your own router or gateway, then check its label and the manual or support page for the exact model. They can identify the local admin address and explain whether the device uses a printed default password or requires a password created during setup. Default credentials vary, and they may have been changed, so do not assume that a commonly used username or password will work.

Router addresses vary too. Addresses such as 192.168.0.1 and 10.0.0.1 are examples, not universal login addresses. Cyber.gov.au advises checking the router label or manual for the correct address and credentials: Secure your home Wi-Fi network.
If you changed and forgot the admin password
Try a recovery option supported by your router
Look in the exact model’s current instructions for a “Forgot password” or account-recovery option. Some routers allow recovery by email or security question, but that option may only work if it was configured before you lost access. If the router belongs to your internet provider, use that provider’s instructions or contact its support team.

For example, the covered Verizon 5G Home Router lets the user connect to the gateway, open my.router or 192.168.0.1, and select “Forgot Admin Password?” to answer a security question. Its default WebGUI password is printed on the underside label. Those steps apply to that model, not to every Verizon gateway or router: Verizon 5G Home Router instructions.

Use a factory reset only if the manufacturer or ISP directs you to
If no supported recovery option is available, the manufacturer may direct you to reset the router. A factory reset can restore access, but it may also erase custom admin, Wi-Fi, and internet settings. You may need to set up the network again, and an ISP-provided gateway may require provider-specific configuration. Check with your ISP before resetting unfamiliar provider equipment.

Reset procedures are model-specific. For example, TP-Link’s FAQ, updated April 17, 2026, says that for the forgotten-password case it covers, a factory reset is the way to regain access if the remembered credentials fail. Its instruction to hold the powered-on router’s Reset button for about 10 seconds applies to the covered TP-Link routers; the reset erases custom settings. Follow your own device’s current instructions rather than applying that timing to another model: TP-Link router password reset.

After you regain access, secure the router
- Replace any default admin username or password with a strong, unique credential.
- Use WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal for Wi-Fi security if your router supports it. If an older router offers only outdated WPA or WEP and an update cannot add WPA2 or WPA3, the FTC advises considering a replacement for security—not as a routine password-recovery step.
- Turn off remote management if you do not need to administer the router from outside your home network.
- If your ISP supplied the router, check whether it manages updates or has other device-specific security instructions.
These steps align with the FTC’s home Wi-Fi security guidance. The FTC also advises small businesses to change default router credentials and disable remote management: FTC guidance on securing a wireless network.
