If you forgot your Samsung pattern, the one documented way to regain access without erasing data is to use your previous screen lock—if you changed it recently and your Galaxy meets Samsung’s requirements. Otherwise, the official options are a factory reset, which deletes data, or help from an authorized Samsung service centre. Before proceeding, identify your model and One UI version, check what backups may be available, and make sure you can sign in to the Samsung and Google accounts associated with the phone.
Can you unlock a Samsung Galaxy without losing data?
Possibly, but only if you still know the previous PIN, password, or pattern and changed the lock within the eligible time window. Samsung describes this recovery for Galaxy devices running One UI 6.1 or later. Its India support page says the previous lock is retained for 72 hours; the option is not available if “Delete previous PIN now” was selected. Samsung notes that names, screens, and availability can vary by model and software version.

Samsung support in India states: “After changing your screen lock PIN, password, or pattern, the previous screen lock data is stored for 72 hours and then deleted.” The same regional guidance says the forgotten-lock prompt appears after five or more failed attempts. Do not use repeated guesses: three incorrect entries of the previous lock method disable further attempts.
Try your previous screen lock first
- Confirm the phone runs One UI 6.1 or later and that you changed its PIN, password, or pattern within the last 72 hours.
- After at least five failed unlock attempts, look for “Forgot PIN/Password/Pattern?” on the lock screen. Wording and availability can differ.
- Choose the prompt and enter the previous screen lock method carefully. If you do not know it, stop rather than guessing.
This is the only non-erasing recovery option documented in the Samsung guidance cited here. If you do not meet its conditions, the official reset routes erase the device; the sources do not establish a universal data-preserving bypass for someone who lacks both the current and previous credential.

Before a factory reset, check backups and account access
A factory reset removes personal data stored on the phone. If you can, check whether photos, contacts, files, or other important items are backed up to a cloud service or computer before erasing it. Also confirm that you know the Samsung account credentials and the Google account previously added to the device. A reset does not remove ownership checks.
Remote erase with SmartThings Find
Samsung documents “Erase data” in SmartThings Find as a factory reset. The availability depends on the account enrollment, remote-control settings, device status, and connectivity requirements in your region. Check Samsung’s instructions for your country rather than assuming the same controls apply everywhere. Samsung’s US guidance covers locating a Galaxy device and remote actions; its India page explains that an erase requested while offline takes effect when the device next connects.

Samsung provides a button-based reset route for locked devices, but the required buttons and steps depend on the model. Do not follow a sequence written for a different Galaxy phone. Find the exact model’s official Samsung support instructions or contact Samsung support if you cannot identify the correct procedure.

Expect Google account verification after resetting
Google device protection, also known as Factory Reset Protection, may require the Google account previously registered on the phone after a button reset. Make sure you can sign in to that account before resetting. Samsung UK notes that after a Google password change, the new password may take 24 hours or longer to become active. If you cannot recall the credentials, use Google account recovery or contact an authorized Samsung service centre with proof of purchase rather than trying to bypass the protection.

When to contact Samsung service
If the previous-lock option is unavailable, you cannot complete a reset, or account verification fails, contact Samsung support or an authorized service centre. Samsung UK says an authorized centre may help a locked-out customer who can provide proof of purchase. Ask what the service will do before handing over the phone; a factory reset may still be necessary and can erase its stored data.
