If no remote unlock option was set up beforehand, Samsung says a factory reset is required to regain access—and it deletes data stored on the tablet. A reset also does not bypass Google account verification.
Before you reset: identify the tablet and understand the loss
“Galaxy Tab A” covers multiple models, and the buttons used to open Recovery differ between devices. Check the model number on the original box, receipt, or device label; for example, Samsung lists the Galaxy Tab A (2016, 7) as model SM-T285. Use the number to find instructions for your specific tablet rather than assuming one button sequence fits every Tab A.

A screen-lock PIN, password, or pattern is different from the password for a Google or Samsung account. Resetting the screen lock by erasing the tablet will not remove ownership checks during setup.
A factory reset deletes personal data stored locally. If you have a backup, you may be able to restore backed-up content during setup; files that were never backed up should not be expected to return. Samsung describes reset consequences and methods in its factory reset guidance.

Try a soft restart and check for an unlock option first
A soft restart does not erase the tablet. Samsung’s lockout guidance suggests holding Power and Volume Down until the screen turns black and the Samsung logo appears. This may help with some unlocking problems, but it does not remove a forgotten screen lock in every case.
Samsung says a remote unlock method can help only if it was set up in advance. The available options depend on the device and its configuration; do not assume that Samsung Find or SmartThings Find can remove the screen lock on your Tab A. Samsung UK’s guidance states: “If you are locked out of your device and have not set up a remote unlock method, you will need to perform a factory reset.” Read the Samsung lockout guidance for its current options.
Reset the tablet from Recovery
Samsung’s general tablet instructions describe a Recovery-menu reset, but warn that button combinations vary by device. Confirm the procedure for your exact model before trying it. The following are Samsung’s general button combinations, not a guarantee for every Galaxy Tab A:

Once in Recovery, Samsung’s general instructions use Volume Down to highlight “Wipe data/factory reset,” Power to select it, and a confirmation of “Yes.” Menu wording and steps may vary by model. See Samsung’s tablet-button reset instructions alongside the instructions for your model.
If you cannot unlock the tablet, you may not be able to power it off normally. Samsung notes that in this situation the battery may need to run down before the device can be switched off. Do not rely on a forced-shutdown sequence that has not been verified for your model.
Use remote erase only if the tablet meets Samsung’s requirements
Samsung Find or SmartThings Find may let you erase a tablet remotely, but this is an erase—not a data-preserving password reset. Samsung’s US guidance requires the tablet to be on, connected to a stable network, linked to a Samsung account, and configured with remote controls enabled. If eligible, use the service website to select the tablet and choose “Erase data”; Samsung may ask you to verify the account again. Erasing deletes data on the device.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Complete Google account verification after the reset
A Recovery-menu reset may trigger Google Device Protection during setup. Be ready to enter the Google account previously registered on the tablet. This is separate from the screen-lock password and is an ownership check, not a way to unlock the old screen lock.
If you have forgotten the Google password, recover it through Google. Samsung warns that after a password change, the new password may take 24 hours or longer to work on the reset device. If you use multiple Google accounts, Samsung suggests checking which account lists the tablet. For Samsung’s guidance on verification and next steps, see Unable to unlock Galaxy phone or tablet.
If you cannot recover the previously registered Google account, Samsung’s stated fallback is to contact an authorized service center and provide proof of purchase. Contact your local Samsung support channel for service options in your region.
