Gemini notebooks are useful when a project needs more than saved snippets: they bring chats, instructions and selected sources into a continuing AI workflow. That can change how you collect and use information, but it does not mean Google Keep or Microsoft OneNote has been replaced. Keep still suits quick capture and lists; Gemini notebooks suit source-based project work.
What changed with Gemini notebooks?
Google introduced notebooks in the Gemini app as dedicated spaces for organizing chats and files. You can move existing Gemini chats into a notebook, add instructions and sources, then ask Gemini questions in the context of that project. Google described the idea as “personal knowledge bases shared across Google products, starting in Gemini” in its April 8, 2026 announcement.

The product name changed soon afterward: Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook on July 16, 2026. Google said the standalone research product would continue while becoming more connected with its ecosystem. The Gemini app’s notebooks and Gemini Notebook are related, but they are not identical views of the same capabilities.
How the notebook workflow works
- Create a project space: In the Gemini app, create a notebook for a topic or ongoing task rather than saving each item in isolation.
- Bring in context: Add supported files, URLs or copied text, and move relevant Gemini chats into the notebook. The app can also use Google Drive files when the required activity setting is enabled.
- Set instructions: Add guidance about how Gemini should respond for that project, such as the audience or format you need.
- Ask questions over time: Continue the conversation with the notebook’s material available as context. Gemini app answers may also draw on web search and other tools, so they are not necessarily restricted to the sources you selected.
- Use the connected research product when needed: Sources added in Gemini sync with Gemini Notebook, where additional research features such as Audio or Video Overviews, infographics and slide decks are available.
That last distinction matters for source reliability. Google says Gemini Notebook responses are grounded exclusively in notebook sources. Gemini app responses can use those sources, but may also draw on web search and other tools. Studio-generated artifacts such as Audio Overviews, Video Overviews, infographics and slide decks are available in Gemini Notebook, not from the Gemini app notebook view. Gemini notebooks vs. Keep and OneNote

Google’s documentation supports a Keep connection, not a claim that Keep content automatically migrates into a Gemini notebook. Likewise, there is no established official OneNote import or migration in the sources cited here. So “forget” is best understood as one person’s changed workflow: use a project notebook when the work depends on connected sources and ongoing synthesis, while keeping a separate note app for capture if that is what you need.
What can you add, and how much?
In the Gemini app, documented source types include files on your device, Google Drive files, URLs and copied text. Gemini Notebook supports a broader set, including Google Docs, Slides and Sheets, PDFs, Word and Markdown files, audio, images, public YouTube URLs and eligible Google Play Books. Availability and file restrictions vary by type; consult Google’s source-format help before building a workflow around a particular file.

Google’s source documentation lists a limit of up to 50 sources per notebook for free users, with higher allowances on paid plans. It also lists uploaded files up to 200 MB or 500,000 words, subject to additional format-specific restrictions. A separate Google plan comparison lists 50 sources per notebook on Standard, 100 on Plus, 300 on Pro, and 500 or 600 on the two Ultra tiers shown. Google marks plan limits as subject to change, and its September 2, 2026 usage-limit update describes a shift toward compute-based quotas, so check the current account and plan details before relying on a quota.

Who can use the connected Gemini app experience?
Google describes Gemini app notebook availability as a gradual rollout. Its current help guidance says the connected Gemini app workflow requires a personal Google Account and age 18 or older; work and school accounts are excluded from this particular integration. Google separately documents Workspace use of Gemini Notebook, so that restriction should not be read as a blanket ban on the standalone product.

Google says Gemini Notebook is designed to connect automatically to Gemini in most regions, while users in the European Economic Area may need to connect it manually. The connected experience is documented for web and mobile, with some platform-specific differences. Keep Activity is a real feature dependency
Keep Activity is not just a setting for whether Gemini saves a chat history. Google says that with it turned off, Gemini cannot automatically save new chats into notebooks, use prior notebook chat memory, add existing chats directly from the sidebar or use Google Drive sources. Study and business notebooks also require Keep Activity. That makes the setting a practical trade-off: turning it off disables several parts of the connected workflow.

Google also distinguishes notebook data from Gemini Apps activity. Turning off Keep Activity or deleting Gemini Apps activity does not delete data stored in Gemini Notebook. Google says notebook files and chats are not used directly to train foundational generative AI models unless the user provides feedback; Gemini app chat data follows a separate activity and privacy policy. Read Google’s privacy and activity guidance before treating one control as a complete deletion or privacy setting.

No universal switch makes sense. Keep remains a straightforward choice for quick capture and lists, and Google’s separate Gemini-to-Keep connection can cover some lightweight tasks. Gemini notebooks are compelling when you want a project workspace: a selected source bundle, continuing chats and tailored instructions that help you query or synthesize that material.

OneNote is a separate decision. The available Google documentation does not establish a migration path or full feature comparison, so it would be misleading to present Gemini notebooks as a drop-in replacement. If your existing OneNote setup depends on conventional notebook organization or other features, assess those needs directly before changing tools.
