Food scrap pickup can make composting easier if you do not have a backyard, convenient drop-off site, or municipal collection. But there is no single nationwide pickup network: service areas, accepted scraps, schedules, prices, and equipment vary by provider and address. Coffee grounds and eggshells are commonly accepted; check your local program’s current list before putting anything else in the bin.
Is there food scrap pickup near you?
Start with your city or county waste department’s website, then check local compost haulers, community compost projects, and drop-off locations. Confirm that service reaches your exact address: a provider may operate in a city without serving every neighborhood.

Examples reported by the Associated Press in 2026 include Scrap Soils in Detroit; Compost Now in Atlanta and Raleigh, Durham, and Asheville, North Carolina; Compost Co. in Nashville; and Denver Compost Collective. These are examples, not a complete directory. The AP reported that Scrap Soils had more than 70 homes and businesses signed up in Detroit.

There are also municipal programs and drop-off options. The AP reported that BioCycle counted 400 municipally supported residential food-waste collection programs in the United States in 2023, including 230 with curbside pickup. That dated figure is not a count of private providers or a current nationwide total.

Pickup or drop-off: which option fits?
Pickup saves a trip, while drop-off may be available where curbside collection is not. For example, the AP describes Scrap Soils making weekly pickups in Detroit. Nashville, New York City, and Rockville publish information about drop-off options. Availability and operating details are local, so check the official page for the program you plan to use.
Before signing up, verify these practical details:
- Address eligibility: Does the service cover your home or business?
- Schedule and set-out: What day is collection, and where and when should the container go?
- Price and billing: Is the service free or paid, and what is the current recurring charge?
- Container and liners: Does the provider supply a pail? Are bags allowed, and what kinds?
- Finished compost: Is it returned or available to participants, or does the provider handle it elsewhere?
These are important distinctions, not standardized features of food-scrap programs. For instance, Alexandria’s curbside program says its starter kit includes a 7-gallon collection container and compostable bags, while Rockville advises drop-off users to carry scraps in a container.

Can you put coffee grounds and eggshells in compost pickup?
They are commonly accepted. Guidance from Milwaukee, Nashville, New York City, Rockville, Alexandria, and Washington, D.C., includes coffee grounds and eggshells, but acceptance rules differ for other materials. Follow the list published by your own service rather than assuming that a food scrap accepted in one city is accepted in another.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor example, New York City says most of its drop-off sites cannot accept meat, fish, bones, dairy, fat, oil, or greasy prepared food. Milwaukee excludes raw meat, tea bags, food packaging, liquids, and several other categories. Some providers may have different rules, including for food-soiled paper, filters, or compostable packaging. Remove produce stickers where required; Scrap Soils emphasizes sticker removal in its customer education, according to the AP.

- Unique design keeps bags tucked inside for a neat look
- 1. 75-Gallon/6. 62-Liter capacity perfect for busy kitchens
- Smooth interior makes Bin easy to clean
- Odor-containing and pest-reducing since oxygen can flow through the soft-close lid
- Stay-open lid makes it easy to toss scraps in while you’re working
When a rule is unclear, ask the provider before adding the item. Contamination can make collected material harder to process, and a general composting guide may not reflect the facility or program receiving your scraps.
What do food scrap pickup services cost?
Prices are local examples, not a national rate or average. The AP reported in 2026 that Scrap Soils’ Detroit household pickup started at $15 per month; business service was $60 per month or more depending on volume. Alexandria’s municipal page lists curbside composting at $5 per month or $55 per year after July 1, 2025. Check each program’s current terms before enrolling, since rates can change.

What happens to the scraps?
Collected scraps can be taken to a composting site and turned into material used as a soil additive. Composting can divert organic waste from landfill and return nutrients to soil, but the sources cited here do not quantify a per-household climate benefit for any particular service.

Experts quoted by the AP describe the potential climate importance of reducing food waste in landfills. Emily Cassidy, a research associate at Project Drawdown, said: “Because methane has such a big impact on the climate in a short amount of time, the more we can reduce methane, it is like pulling the emergency brake on climate change.” She also said: “That’s a way that we can see that we’re benefiting the environment, because we’re taking food and then replenishing the ground with those nutrients.” Those statements describe the broader pathway, not measured savings for an individual pickup route.

- Reuse your kitchen scraps and coffee grinds into our kitchen compost bin with the plastic inner pail and handle: Just put this small trash can on your kitchen countertop, throw away the food scraps (such as fruits, vegetables, coffee grounds, tea bags, egg shells, etc.) in it during cooking; 1.3 gallons offers enough space for temporarily collecting your organic kitchen and food waste for several days, without taking up too much space.
- The plastic inner pail comes out easily, and the little handle on the inner pail is thoughtful to make it a breeze to throw kitchen scraps into your compost tumbler outdoors!
- The countertop compost bucket with lid comes with 2 active carbon filters to prevent odor leaking: The charcoal filter blocks odor naturally and effectively, leaving your kitchen smelling fresh. Put the lid on, and it becomes the perfect farmhouse kitchen decor without any unpleasant smells. Tips: The period of use of the carbon filter is about 4 months to 6 months. Please remember to replace it in time.
- Long-lasting kitchen decor will never rust: The plastic inner pail isolates the scraps from contact with the outer metal bucket, so it will be more durable and will not crack, rust, or corrode. The cream beige color and classic farmhouse pattern make it a unique fit for any kitchen, whether rustic, minimal, boho, or country.
- Our kitchen compost bin considers aesthetics and practicality, and this trash can is a high-quality product that will accompany you in your actions of everyday life. This would also make a wonderful conscious gift.
What if your city does not collect food scraps?
Look for a private hauler, community compost project, or public drop-off site. If you find an option, check its accepted-items list, hours or pickup schedule, and container rules before collecting scraps. A lidded countertop bin can be a convenient temporary collection container, but it does not compost food by itself; first check whether the provider supplies a pail or restricts liners.
