Folding Ideas is Dan Olson’s channel, and its appeal is the way it connects individual stories to larger cultural and economic structures. It is a recommendation for patient, argument-led viewing, not for short or frequent updates.
What is the Folding Ideas YouTube channel about?
Olson describes himself on his Patreon About page as: “Dan Olson is an Alberta based documentarian making videos on a broad range of subjects rooted in stories and how they reflect and shape the world around us.” That description is a better guide than assigning the channel a single beat. Folding Ideas moves among media, online communities, technology, storytelling and the business of art, using particular stories to examine the systems that produce and circulate them.

The channel therefore feels closer to a documentary series than to a topical-news feed. Individual videos can take a substantial amount of time to research and watch, and they generally build toward a thesis rather than offering a quick reaction.

It connects internet culture to wider systems
Folding Ideas does not treat online phenomena as isolated curiosities. Its stated focus on stories and the way they reflect and shape the world around us encourages questions about incentives, institutions, money, power and narrative.
#1 Best Overall
- Used Book in Good Condition
It is built for viewers who enjoy developed arguments
If you like video essays that establish context, gather evidence and follow an argument over documentary-length runtimes, the channel is a strong fit. The trade-off is that this is not a dependable source of rapid, frequent updates; the available sources do not establish a fixed upload schedule.
Its best-known work demonstrates the format
“Line Goes Up – The Problem With NFTs” is a useful starting point. TIME reported in February 2022 that Olson spent ten months making the film and that it examined blockchain security, NFT hype and decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs). TIME said the video had passed four million views at the time of that article, a dated figure rather than a current total.

Where should you start with Dan Olson’s videos?
- Begin with “Line Goes Up – The Problem With NFTs.” It is the clearest introduction to Olson’s long-form approach and brought the channel substantial public attention.
- Watch for the method, not only the subject. Notice how the video moves from a popular story about NFTs to questions about technical claims, incentives and the organizations built around them.
- Choose another topic that matches your interests. Because Folding Ideas covers a range of subjects rooted in stories, media and the business of art, the next choice should be driven by the premise that interests you rather than by a required viewing order.
How should you interpret the NFT video’s conclusions?
“Line Goes Up” was influential, but its reception was not unanimous. TIME paired Olson’s critique with responses from macro-economist and crypto investor Tascha Che. Che agreed with some of his assessments while describing the technology as a work in progress. That makes the video a strong entry point into the arguments around NFTs, blockchain projects and DAOs—not proof that every disagreement was settled by one documentary.
Who is Folding Ideas for?
| If you prefer | Folding Ideas offers | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| A recurring single subject | A broad range of subjects connected by stories, media and cultural systems | The topic changes from video to video |
| Short commentary | Research-heavy, documentary-length essays | Individual videos require a substantial time commitment |
| A simple verdict | An argument that examines context and, in notable cases, acknowledges counterarguments | The presentation is interpretive analysis, not a neutral reference entry |
What do the available audience figures actually show?
Subscriber and view totals below are historical snapshots, not a live count:
- 733,000 subscribers (August 2022): Christina Wurst listed Folding Ideas at this level in a 2022 academic sample. The paper used “LeftTube” as an analytical sample category and cautioned that channel-community groupings can be contested; that label should not be treated as an uncontested identity claim.
- One million subscribers (end of 2025): FoldableHuman’s “Wrap-Up for 2025” Patreon post reported this creator-side milestone. It should not be read as a current count beyond that dated retrospective.
- More than four million views (February 2022): TIME reported this figure for “Line Goes Up” at the time of its article, not as a present-day total.
No reliable current subscriber, view or upload total is established by these dated sources.
