A foldable phone’s inner screen is a layered assembly, not a single sheet of bendable glass. Ultra-thin glass (UTG), protective layers and a factory-fitted film can each have a different role, and the outer cover display may use different materials. The exact construction and care instructions vary by model, so do not remove or add film to the inner screen based on generic phone advice.
What layers make up a foldable phone display?
There is no universal foldable-screen stack. Manufacturers describe different constructions for different models, and the inner folding display is not the same surface as the outside cover display.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 and Z Fold4
Samsung’s 2022 support guidance describes these models’ inner displays as an AMOLED panel beneath UTG, a protective layer and a replaceable protective film at the top. Samsung says the UTG provides a flat surface and enhances durability. The Z Fold4 also has a fibre-reinforced plastic digitiser; Samsung’s page does not list that part for the Z Flip4. This is a model-specific explanation, not a diagram that applies to every foldable. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip4 and Z Fold4 display guidance covers the layers and care recommendations.
Motorola Razr family and Razr Fold
Motorola says Razr phones have a manufacturer-developed liner tailored to the folding design. For the Razr Fold announced in 2026, Motorola describes an inner titanium plate, UTG and Anti-Shock Film, and Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3 on the outside. That is a separate, model-specific construction; it should not be treated as the standard stack for all Razr phones or foldables. What is ultra-thin glass, and is it the screen protector?
Ultra-thin glass is glass engineered to be thin and flexible enough to serve as a cover window in some foldable displays. It is not the same thing as the factory-applied polymer film on top of the display. Samsung’s Fold4 and Flip4 guidance lists UTG beneath a protective layer and the top film. Samsung Display reported that its UTG cover window was 30 micrometres thick in a 2020 announcement; that figure describes Samsung Display’s product, not every manufacturer’s UTG. Samsung Display’s 2020 UTG announcement also reported that the glass passed 200,000 fold tests simulating extreme lifetime-use reliability, with Bureau Veritas commissioned to test durability. This is Samsung Display’s reported result, not a standardized head-to-head comparison across phones.
“Cover glass” can also mean protective glass on an outer cover display. In that context it refers to a different surface from the UTG cover window used within some inner folding displays. Check which display a product or support page means before comparing materials or buying a protector.

Can I remove the screen protector on my foldable phone?
Do not assume the inner-screen film is an ordinary, user-removable phone protector. Samsung says the film on the cited Z Fold4 and Z Flip4 can be replaced, but recommends keeping it attached. It warns that arbitrary removal or installation can damage the panel and that uncertified film may distort the display or affect performance. If the film is scratched, bubbling or lifting, contact Samsung Support for the appropriate replacement route rather than peeling it off or attempting a DIY replacement.

Motorola’s guidance for the Razr family is stricter: it says not to remove the pre-installed inner-screen liner. Motorola warns that a third-party inner-screen protector can reduce touch sensitivity, make the main display unresponsive, damage it or cause touch problems. Follow the instructions for the exact phone model and region; one maker’s replacement policy does not establish another maker’s policy. Can I put a screen protector on a foldable phone?
Distinguish the inner folding screen from the outer cover display. Do not add a third-party protector to the inner screen unless the maker explicitly approves it for your model. For the outer cover display, a protector can be an option if it is specifically made for that phone and that surface. Confirm the exact model and compatibility before buying; a protector described simply as “for a foldable” may not fit the cover display or may be intended for a different device.

Avoid pressure and trapped debris
- Do not press hard on the fold area or push the screen with hard objects.
- Keep cards, keys, sand and other foreign objects away from the folding screen before closing the phone.
- Keep dust exposure down. Motorola warns that dust can reduce hinge life and damage the display.
Clean gently
For the Razr Fold, Motorola recommends wiping the screen with a dry, soft cloth. It warns against abrasive cloths and spraying cleaner directly onto the screen. Check your phone’s own care guidance before using a liquid or cleaning method.

Are foldability and drop-resistance figures comparable?
No. Samsung Display’s 2020 figure of 200,000 refers to reported fold tests under its stated simulation and testing context. Motorola’s 2026 Razr Fold announcement says its phone has over 75% better drop performance than previous-generation devices, attributing the claim to Motorola’s internal testing. A fold-cycle result and a drop-performance claim measure different things, use different methods and should not be ranked against each other as if they were one durability score.
