Don’t peel off the foldable iPhone’s inner-screen layer or buy a generic foldable-phone film based on the available evidence. Tom’s Guide reported on 1 October 2026 that Apple hardware engineering chief Kate Bergeron described a replaceable cover layer, but the report does not establish that owners can safely replace it themselves or confirm which Apple service channels handle it. Ask Apple or a local provider for a model-specific service quote and instructions before acting.
What is the replaceable layer?
Tom’s Guide reported that the folding display has a separate cover layer above the display. In an interview with @angietutorials, Apple VP of Hardware Engineering Kate Bergeron described it as replaceable: “It’s actually replaceable, which is a really nice thing for the customer, that you can peel off that layer and get a new one.” The same report quotes her saying the matte coating helps minimize the crease and that Apple engineered the cover layer to wear over a longer period.

That statement is not a model-specific service manual or DIY guide. It does not establish that the layer is an ordinary screen protector, that owners should peel it off, or that a replacement can be fitted safely at home. Treat “replaceable” as a reported service possibility, not permission to remove the installed layer.

How much might replacement cost?
Tom’s Guide reported that a service-cost listing spotted by tech YouTuber Quinn Nelson showed $19 for the cover layer and $99 for inner-display damage in an AppleCare service-cost context. These are reported listing amounts, not confirmed universal customer prices: Tom’s Guide said it had not seen Apple report prices for uncovered phones. The report does not establish regional availability, current eligibility, or what a specific repair would cost.

Ask Apple for a quote for your country and exact model, and clarify whether the problem is wear to the cover layer or damage to the display beneath it. Do not assume the $19 figure applies to an out-of-warranty repair or to every market.
Which repair route should you use?
Apple’s general display guidance recommends trained technicians using genuine Apple display parts. It lists Apple, Apple Authorised Service Providers, and Independent Repair Providers as repair routes, subject to location and availability. Those general pages do not confirm which providers can replace the reported foldable cover layer.

Apple’s general parts guidance says non-genuine parts may perform differently and can pose privacy or safety risks; third-party parts are not covered by Apple warranty or AppleCare. That guidance concerns iPhone parts generally and does not specifically test replacement film for the reported foldable. It therefore cannot confirm that every third-party film is unsafe, but it also provides no basis for recommending one.
