The weaker station is suppressed in the audio; no broadcaster is switching it off.
Why does a stronger FM station take over a weaker one?
The FM capture effect occurs when two FM signals compete inside a receiver’s passband and one arrives strongly enough to dominate the receiver’s processing. Instead of hearing the stations blended together, you may hear the stronger one clearly while the weaker one fades or disappears.

This is a receiver-side behavior, not a remote station-selection decision. A useful analogy is two people speaking toward a microphone that can follow only one voice: it tends to follow the more prominent voice. In an FM radio, however, the effect comes from the receiver’s limiting and demodulation stages, not from any conscious choice.

FM carries audio through changes in a signal’s frequency. Before recovering those changes as sound, an FM receiver uses a limiter to reduce amplitude variations. When competing signals are present, the stronger one can dominate the limiting and demodulation process, leaving the weaker signal effectively absent from the receiver’s output. The exact behavior depends on the receiver and demodulator design.

What capture ratio means
Capture ratio is the received-level difference required for the stronger of two signals to suppress the weaker under a specified receiver and test condition. A lower capture-ratio figure means the stronger signal needs less of a level advantage to achieve suppression. H. Ward Silver’s July 2004 ARRL article describes 1.5 dB as a good capture ratio and notes that a 1 dB difference can sometimes produce complete suppression; those are explanatory examples, not guarantees for all radios. Capture ratio is not the same as capture threshold
FM engineering also uses “capture threshold” in discussions of signal-to-noise performance. The Virginia Tech-hosted textbook Radio Systems Engineering describes this threshold in audio communications as typically on the order of 10 dB. That figure concerns an FM signal-to-noise threshold; it should not be treated as a universal consumer-radio capture-ratio specification. See the textbook.

What you may notice while listening
A station suddenly appears while driving
As you move, the relative strengths of stations transmitting on the same frequency can change. A previously weaker station may become stronger at your location and abruptly replace the station you were hearing. Silver describes this sort of station “popping” into the channel while traveling in the ARRL article.
Two stations transmit at once on a repeater
If two stations transmit simultaneously into an FM repeater, the stronger signal can suppress the weaker one until it stops. The listener may hear the stronger transmission rather than both signals mixed together.

Why capture can help or frustrate
Capture can reduce the audible effect of a weaker co-channel signal, which is useful when one signal is clearly dominant. But if the desired station loses its strength advantage as reception conditions change, another station can take over abruptly. Unlike FM capture, AM co-channel reception can leave multiple stations audible together. This comparison does not mean FM is immune to every kind of interference.
How to compare capture-ratio figures
A capture-ratio number is meaningful only alongside the conditions under which it was measured. When comparing receivers or test results, check:

- the stated capture-ratio value and the test method;
- the suppression criterion used to decide that the weaker signal has been suppressed;
- the received signal conditions; and
- whether the measurement is for broadcast wideband FM or another FM service.
Even when two figures are available, compare them only if their test conditions match. The cited sources establish that capture depends on receiver design; they do not provide a current standardized comparison of consumer radios.

Capture explains why the stronger of two competing FM signals can dominate a receiver’s output. It does not mean that every FM radio has the same capture behavior, that every small signal difference guarantees suppression, or that FM eliminates interference in general. The 1.5 dB and roughly 10 dB examples describe different engineering concepts and should not be read as interchangeable specifications.
