To survive longer in Flying Shark, prioritize dodging airborne enemies, learn the separate shot and bomb controls, and protect your shot upgrades by avoiding deaths. The arcade game has five stages; you do not need to clear every target to progress, but understanding which formations and ground enemies can provide upgrades makes a run more manageable.
What to know before your first run
Flying Shark, also known as Sky Shark, is Toaplan’s 1987 vertically scrolling shooter. Its arcade controls are an eight-way joystick, a Shot button and a separate Bomb button. Learn where both buttons are before a crowded wave arrives, and practice moving deliberately while firing rather than making constant, uncontrolled sweeps. TATSUJIN’s official game guide documents the arcade controls and mechanics.

The central survival rule is to treat airborne enemies as collision hazards as well as sources of fire: enemy shots and contact with airborne enemies destroy your plane and cost a life. By contrast, the official guide says colliding with enemies on land or sea does not cost a life. That difference makes your position relative to aircraft the main thing to watch when deciding where to move.

Prioritize airborne threats and keep moving with purpose
Watch where aircraft enter from and leave yourself room to respond. Avoid darting across the screen without a reason: deliberate movement helps you track incoming threats and keeps your plane from drifting into an airborne enemy. The Steam edition’s listing notes that moving left or right can expand the field of vision beyond the screen borders and reveal hidden threats. Use that wider view when available, but remember it is a feature of that enhanced PC edition, not a universal arcade mechanic. Steam’s Flying Shark listing describes this feature.
#1 Best Overall
- Includes Flying Shark (1987), Fire Shark (1989), and Wardner (1987)!
- Super Easy or Arcade Challenge? New bonus modes for every skill level!
- Enjoy the free DLC game Teki-Paki!
Ground and sea enemies are a different case under the official arcade rules, but do not let them distract you from aircraft and their shots. If the screen becomes difficult to read, focus on a safe route through airborne threats first; attacking optional targets is secondary to keeping your plane alive.
Collect upgrades without taking unnecessary risks
Red formations raise shot power
Shoot down all aircraft in a red formation to produce an S item, which raises shot power by one level. The official guide describes six shot-power levels. Since losing a life resets power-ups, keeping a life also protects the upgrade level you have built up. Do not pursue the last aircraft in a formation if doing so would put your plane in the path of a more immediate airborne threat.

Some ground enemies can add a bomb
Destroying certain ground enemies can reveal a B item, which adds one bomb. The guide does not say that every ground enemy drops one, so treat the item as a possible resource rather than a guaranteed reward.
White formations can yield an extra life
Shooting down all aircraft in a white formation can produce a 1UP when certain conditions are met. It is not guaranteed every time, and the official guide does not specify those conditions on its game-information page. Take the opportunity when it fits your route, but do not build a survival plan around receiving an extra life from every white formation.

Use bombs as emergency protection
Bombs destroy enemies, so use the separate Bomb button when an immediate threat leaves no safe path or when spending one helps you stay alive. The game’s documented rules do not establish a universally best moment to use a bomb; timing is a tactical choice, not a guaranteed way to maximize a run.
You start with three bombs after losing a life. At a stage clear, each bomb remaining awards 3,000 points, then your bomb inventory resets to three. That stage-clear bonus is a game rule, not a reason to risk a life by holding a bomb through a dangerous situation.

- 2 ways to play: roll the ball by hand or fire the balls with the launcher.

What changes after a lost life—and what to expect from later stages
A death resets your power-ups and gives you three bombs. Because the shot upgrade is lost, surviving matters for both your life count and your ability to maintain the stronger weapon you have earned. The official guide states that the game has five stages, so reaching later stages means keeping enough lives and control to continue through a five-stage run, not completing an endless sequence.
Make practice easier on the Steam edition
Features vary by version. The enhanced PC edition listed on Steam advertises Beginner and Very Easy modes, customizable practice, autofire assists, quick saves, rewind and controller support. These are edition-specific options; do not assume they exist in the arcade game or every home-computer port.

|---|---|---|
| Beginner or Very Easy mode | Learning movement and threat patterns with a more forgiving setup | These difficulty options are advertised for the Steam edition. |
| Customizable practice | Repeating a section or working on a particular skill | Available as a practice feature in the Steam listing. |
| Quick saves or rewind | Revisiting a difficult moment while learning | These are learning aids in the enhanced PC edition, not arcade rules. |
| Assists such as autofire | Reducing the need to repeatedly press Shot while concentrating on movement | Steam advertises assists; choose settings according to whether you are practicing or pursuing an unassisted score run. |
| Original-style, unassisted attempt | Practicing under stricter conditions or making a clean score attempt | Disable learning aids if you want the challenge to reflect that goal. |
A gamepad is optional on PC: Steam lists controller support, but the available listing does not identify a best controller or verify specific hardware models. Use whichever supported input method lets you make deliberate eight-way movement and reach Shot and Bomb reliably.
A focused practice routine
- Start on the easiest available setting or in a practice mode if you are playing the Steam edition.
- Rehearse moving while firing, then deliberately press Bomb so its separate input is familiar under pressure.
- Pay attention to where airborne enemies enter and use side-to-side movement to check beyond the visible edges if your edition supports it.
- After a death, account for the power-up reset and the return to three bombs; use the next attempt to learn one threat pattern rather than repeating the same approach.
- Once movement and threat recognition feel reliable, change difficulty or disable assists if your goal is a less assisted run.
This routine applies the documented rules and available Steam tools; it is practical guidance, not a claim of a tested optimal strategy.
