Why dtymo built FlyBudget
In an October 2, 2026 launch article, FlyBudget creator dtymo describes trying many budgeting apps, finding useful ideas in them, and wanting some parts to work differently. Rather than naming a single model to copy, the article says FlyBudget draws on features from various budgeting apps and open-source projects. It does not map individual features to specific products, so “combined the best parts” is the creator’s description of the project’s inspiration, not a feature-by-feature comparison.

The materials do not identify the API providers, supported banks or regions, or any setup requirements, so users should check the current documentation and demo before relying on automatic imports.

One commenter said a setting to assign a different currency to an account was not apparent in the demo. That is a report about what the commenter could find, not confirmation that multiple currencies are unsupported. Check the current app or documentation if account currency is important to your budget.

Dtymo says self-hosting is available so people can retain control of their financial data, explaining: “Financial data is personal, and I like giving people the option to run FlyBudget themselves and keep control of their data.” This describes the creator’s rationale; it is not an independent security assessment or proof that the software’s data handling has been audited.

The launch materials do not establish technical requirements, security controls, data flows, backup procedures or the exact steps needed to deploy and maintain a self-hosted instance.
