Flutter recommends starting with web development, which needs an appropriate browser; use a connected Android phone when you need to check Android-specific behavior, and an Android virtual device when you need a particular virtual device profile. The “8GB” figure in the title of a September 18, 2026 DEV Community post is not a verified general emulator requirement or a measured comparison.
Choose a Flutter test target for the job
A browser, a physical Android phone, and an Android virtual device answer different questions. The browser is a low-setup route for web UI iteration; a phone checks behavior on real Android hardware; a virtual device lets you select virtual device definitions and system images. None is a universal substitute for the others.

Run Flutter in a browser on Windows
Flutter’s setup guide recommends web development first because it requires no additional setup beyond an appropriate browser. That makes a browser a practical starting point for UI work, but it tests the app’s web target—not Android rendering or device-specific behavior.
- Install Flutter and choose an editor. Flutter lists VS Code and Android Studio among supported editors; you can also run Flutter commands in a terminal with an editor that supports Dart. See the Flutter installation guide and Flutter FAQ.
- Install Chrome or Edge if you want Flutter’s documented browser run and debugging support. Check which targets Flutter detects by running
flutter devicesin your project directory. - Run the app on a detected browser. Select the browser target in your editor or use the device identifier shown by Flutter. For another browser, start the app with
flutter run -d web-serverand open the served address in that browser. Flutter cautions that debugging support for the web-server target is limited.
Use a real Android phone for Android checks
Flutter supports debugging on a physical Android device as well as on an emulator. A phone avoids starting an Android virtual device for that test and lets you check your app on real hardware. It is not a replacement for testing other device sizes, Android versions, or virtual configurations.

- On the phone, enable Developer options and USB debugging.
- Connect it to the Windows computer. Install the phone maker’s USB driver if Windows needs one.
- Accept the authorization prompt on the phone when it appears.
- Run
flutter devicesfrom the project directory and confirm the phone is listed, then select it as the run target.
When an Android virtual device is worth setting up
Use an Android virtual device when you need to choose a virtual device definition or Android system image. Flutter’s documented emulator setup uses Android Studio and Android SDK components, including a selected system image; VM acceleration is also part of the setup, and hardware graphics acceleration improves rendering performance. Follow the Android setup instructions for the current configuration steps.
A virtual device is useful for testing configurations you do not have as physical phones. It is not necessary merely to get started with Flutter or to preview the web version of an app.

Measure mobile performance on an actual device
Do not use emulator or simulator behavior as representative evidence of mobile performance. Flutter’s build-mode guidance says emulator and simulator behavior is not representative and profile mode is disabled on them. For mobile performance measurements, use profile mode on an actual device; see Flutter’s build modes documentation.

The post page could not be opened, so the available evidence does not establish the tool’s download location, features, system requirements, privacy or security posture, Flutter-version support, memory use, or performance. The “8GB” in the headline is not accompanied by a tested configuration or measurement method, so it should not be treated as a typical Flutter emulator requirement or proof of RAM savings.
