For custom motion, use PageRouteBuilder: its pageBuilder supplies the destination screen, while transitionsBuilder applies animation around that screen. For familiar platform behavior, keep a MaterialPageRoute or CupertinoPageRoute. You can change route animation without changing the app’s overall navigation architecture.
Why put transitions at the route boundary?
A Navigator manages a stack of routes, and the route being pushed determines how its new screen enters. Putting that behavior at the navigation boundary separates screen content from navigation motion: screens describe what they display, while route definitions describe how users move between them. Flutter’s page-route animation recipe uses PageRouteBuilder for this purpose.

This separation does not require replacing Navigator or adopting a routing package. You can keep an imperative stack and make the route animation reusable instead of repeating animation code in each destination widget.

In a custom route, pageBuilder builds the destination, and transitionsBuilder receives the route’s animation, secondary animation, and child. The child is the page supplied by pageBuilder; Flutter documents that it remains stable during the transition, so it does not need to be rebuilt for each animation tick.

Route<T> buildSlideRoute<T>(Widget page) {
return PageRouteBuilder<T>(
pageBuilder: (context, animation, secondaryAnimation) => page,
transitionsBuilder: (context, animation, secondaryAnimation, child) {
final curved = CurvedAnimation(
parent: animation,
curve: Curves.easeOut,
);
final offset = Tween<Offset>(
begin: const Offset(0, 1),
end: Offset.zero,
).animate(curved);
return SlideTransition(position: offset, child: child);
},
);
}
// Example use:
Navigator.of(context).push(buildSlideRoute(const DetailsScreen()));
The Tween maps the route animation to positions, and CurvedAnimation shapes its timing. Here, Offset(0, 1) to Offset.zero moves the incoming page upward from below the viewport by its own height. Direction and curve are design choices, not universal defaults. Flutter’s documented recipe demonstrates this route-level pattern.
Keep the route definition reusable
Place the route factory in a navigation or routing layer, then use it wherever that transition is appropriate. The screen remains ordinary page content; it does not need to own a controller or implement navigation animation itself. If different destinations need different motion, define distinct route factories or route configurations rather than coupling each screen to its entrance effect.

When to use platform-standard transitions
Custom motion is not always the right choice. MaterialPageRoute provides Material route behavior, while CupertinoPageRoute provides an iOS-style horizontal slide and swipe-to-go-back gesture. Flutter also allows transition builders to be configured through PageTransitionsTheme. See the official PageTransitionsTheme API and CupertinoPageTransitionsBuilder API.
Use the standard route when platform familiarity and expected back gestures matter more than a branded effect. Use PageRouteBuilder when the product calls for motion that the standard route does not provide. Builder names, imports, and defaults can vary by Flutter version; in particular, Flutter’s documentation notes that CupertinoPageTransitionsBuilder moved to the Cupertino library. Check the API for the SDK installed by the project.
Transition choice does not dictate routing architecture
Route animation and route architecture answer different questions. A simple stack can use Navigator with either standard routes or custom PageRouteBuilder routes. Apps with more involved deep-linking or multiple navigators may need Flutter’s declarative Router API or a routing package such as go_router. Flutter’s navigation and routing overview explains these options and cautions that named routes are not recommended for most applications.
One practical distinction is deep linking: router-backed page routes can be deep-linkable, whereas pageless routes created through imperative calls such as Navigator.push are not. Choose routing based on navigation requirements; moving animation code into a route definition alone does not make an app’s routes declarative or deep-linkable.

Plan for Android predictive back
Android predictive back lets users preview where a back gesture will navigate before committing to or canceling it. Because the system needs to know whether a route can pop before the gesture completes, pop eligibility must be represented ahead of time. Flutter’s predictive-back migration guide uses PopScope in place of the deprecated WillPopScope pattern.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsKeep pop eligibility synchronized with state
Set PopScope.canPop from the app state that determines whether the current route may be dismissed, and use onPopInvokedWithResult to respond to the outcome. This is an ahead-of-time decision, not a callback that waits for the user to start the gesture and then vetoes it.
Best Value
PopScope<Object?>(
canPop: !hasUnsavedChanges,
onPopInvokedWithResult: (didPop, result) {
if (!didPop) {
// Handle the blocked attempt, such as prompting about unsaved changes.
}
},
child: const EditorScreen(),
)
Keep hasUnsavedChanges tied to the editor’s actual state. If the route must block a pop, handle the blocked attempt without relying on the deprecated just-in-time cancellation behavior. The exact prompt or recovery flow is application-specific.
Check Android setup and Flutter’s transition default
For Android 13 or later, Flutter’s setup guidance instructs adding android:enableOnBackInvokedCallback="true" to the application element in the Android manifest. The guide describes Android 14 (API 34) as enabling predictive-back animations by default for supported system gestures; device behavior still depends on the platform and gesture in use.
The route transition default is also SDK-sensitive. Flutter’s release note for predictive-back page transitions says the new Android default is stable in Flutter 3.38.0: PredictiveBackPageTransitionsBuilder replaces ZoomPageTransitionsBuilder, and ordinary transitions use FadeForwardsPageTransitionsBuilder when no predictive gesture is active. During a predictive gesture, the gesture drives the transition. Apps that explicitly configure an older builder keep that choice and do not get predictive-back route transitions through that builder. Check the project’s Flutter SDK constraint and any explicit PageTransitionsTheme configuration before changing behavior.
