It is a weaker default for a text-heavy marketing or publishing website. The key question is whether your browser experience behaves like an application or primarily presents documents and content.
When Flutter makes sense for a start-up
Flutter’s web guidance highlights two promising cases: a standalone single-page application with rich graphics or interactive content, and a browser version of an existing Flutter mobile app. Sharing UI and business logic across targets may be valuable when the product genuinely needs similar experiences on mobile and web.

That reuse is not automatic savings. The amount of code that can be shared depends on the product, and platform integrations can require separate plugins, configuration, or custom code. Flutter’s documentation describes platform support and integration options, but does not establish that Flutter universally lowers start-up costs or speeds delivery compared with other approaches.

When Flutter is a weaker fit for the web
A public site dominated by articles, documentation, landing pages, or other static text has different needs from an interactive app. Flutter’s documentation says this kind of content benefits from the web’s document-centric model rather than the app-centric services of a UI framework. For a content-first site, consider whether a conventional website architecture better matches the job.
#1 Best Overall
A hybrid is possible: Flutter documents embedding a Flutter view inside an existing web application, while a new Flutter web project defaults to full-page mode. That can let a start-up keep conventional pages around a focused, interactive Flutter feature.
What “cross-platform” requires you to verify
Flutter targets mobile, desktop, and browser platforms, but support is versioned and platform-specific. Its supported-platforms page labels its matrix “As of Flutter 3.47”; check the current matrix for the exact operating-system and browser versions your customers use before committing to a release target.

Likewise, shared application code does not guarantee that every dependency works on every target. Flutter says core packages often support officially supported platforms, but some integrations need additional setup. Features may rely on Flutter or community plugins, or require platform-specific code when a suitable plugin is unavailable.
Before choosing Flutter, list the integrations your product cannot ship without—such as payments, authentication, media, maps, or hardware access—and verify each one against every required target. Test the actual browser behavior and native integrations rather than treating the existence of a package as proof that the complete workflow is ready.
Plan the web build and release
Flutter’s documented web workflow is to create a project or add web support to an existing one, run it in a browser, and create a release with flutter build web. The build documentation also describes a WebAssembly build option using --wasm.
WebAssembly deployment requirements
Flutter’s release guide says WebAssembly builds use multiple threads. The hosting server must return both Cross-Origin-Embedder-Policy: credentialless and Cross-Origin-Opener-Policy: same-origin. Confirm that your hosting and deployment setup can provide these headers before selecting this build path.

Protect source maps
Public source maps can reveal unminified symbol names, class hierarchies, and local file paths, according to Flutter’s release guidance. Keep source maps private when using them for error monitoring; do not publish them unintentionally as part of the production deployment.

- Classify the browser product. Decide whether it is a stateful, interactive app, a content-first site, or a conventional site with one embedded app-like feature.
- Map the targets. Write down the required mobile operating systems, browsers, and versions, then check those exact targets in Flutter’s current support matrix.
- Audit dependencies. For each critical integration, confirm plugin availability, target support, setup requirements, and whether custom platform code would be needed.
- Prototype the riskiest workflow. Build a representative flow that exercises the hardest integration, then test it on the actual target browsers and devices.
- Validate release operations. Measure the resulting build and runtime behavior for your product, verify hosting headers if using WebAssembly, and decide how source maps will be kept private.
- Compare based on your evidence. Evaluate Flutter alongside alternatives against your team’s skills, product requirements, target matrix, and prototype results. The official documentation does not provide a universal comparison of start-up cost, hiring, time to market, SEO outcomes, or browser performance.
What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Flutter’s official documentation supports a conditional answer: it offers browser delivery and multiple platform targets, with a particularly clear web fit for interactive applications and existing Flutter apps. It also identifies the document-centric web as a better match for static, text-rich content.
Best Value
Those platform and workflow facts do not prove that Flutter is cheaper, faster, easier to hire for, or faster in a browser than competing approaches. Such outcomes depend on the start-up’s product, integrations, team, and release environment; validate them with a representative prototype rather than a generic promise.
