Flow warping can synthesize motion blur between video frames by estimating how image content moves, shifting samples along that motion, and averaging them over a simulated exposure. A title-matched DEV Community article proposes this approach for a “Shadow” pipeline associated with Hailuo H3 at 24 fps, but the implementation, H3 integration, and reported performance have not been independently verified. Treat its settings as a technical proposal, not confirmed Hailuo features.
How flow warping proposes to create motion blur
A generated video gives you discrete frames; motion blur represents movement accumulated during an exposure interval. The proposal estimates optical flow—the apparent displacement of image content between frames—then uses that motion to create intermediate warped samples. Averaging samples across a chosen interval can approximate exposure blur more plausibly than simply blending the two endpoint images.

Endpoint blending can leave doubled edges or mix foreground and background in implausible ways. Flow-guided warping instead moves image samples according to estimated motion. This is a general video-processing idea, not evidence that Hailuo H3 itself uses optical flow or that the named Shadow system exists as described. MEMC-Net, a research preprint on video interpolation, provides broader methodological context for motion estimation and compensation, including adaptive warping; it does not validate this particular pipeline.

Estimate motion in both directions
The DEV Community account describes estimating forward and backward optical flow on raw generated frames. Bidirectional estimates can help reason about motion from either endpoint rather than relying on a single one-way displacement field. The article does not provide an independently validated implementation or benchmark for this step.

Smooth motion over time
It proposes smoothing flow across neighboring frames before generating the warped samples. The intent is to reduce abrupt changes in estimated motion that could make blur fluctuate from frame to frame. Smoothing is a design choice, not a guarantee: overly strong smoothing can also suppress genuine acceleration or sudden direction changes.
Warp samples across a synthetic exposure
For an output frame, the method samples warped image content over part of the interval between generated frames and averages those samples. The exposure window and sample count determine how much temporal integration the synthesis approximates. The account’s highest-motion setting is unusual: it lists a 360-degree shutter but only one sub-sample. Without a fuller definition of how that single sample represents an exposure, the table does not establish that it performs a temporal average across the full interval.
Repair disoccluded regions
When foreground motion reveals background that was hidden in the source frame, warping alone cannot recover those missing pixels. The proposal detects such disocclusions and inpaints the gaps. This can reduce holes or stretched regions, but inpainting supplies plausible image content rather than recovering unseen ground truth. Fine texture, thin objects, low-texture areas, and occlusion boundaries are natural places to inspect for invented detail or seams.

Adaptive settings reported by the article
The following motion bins and settings are claims from the title-matched DEV Community article, not independently established defaults or Hailuo H3 controls. “Pixels per frame” is the article’s motion-bin unit; the source does not independently specify how motion is measured or normalized.
| Motion bin claimed | Shutter setting claimed | Sub-samples claimed |
|---|---|---|
| 0–2 pixels per frame | 90 degrees | 4 |
| 2–8 pixels per frame | 180 degrees | 8 |
| 8–20 pixels per frame | 220 degrees | 10 |
| Above 20 pixels per frame | 360 degrees | 1 |
The listed boundaries overlap at 2, 8, and 20 pixels per frame, and the article does not state how equality is assigned. It also does not establish that these thresholds generalize across resolutions, subjects, flow estimators, or frame rates. The settings are best read as one proposed policy: increase the blur window and sampling for most higher-motion bins, then switch to a single sample in the highest bin.
What the shutter angles mean at 24 fps
Shutter angle expresses exposure duration as a fraction of a frame interval: exposure time equals the frame interval multiplied by angle divided by 360. At 24 frames per second, one frame interval is approximately 41.7 milliseconds, calculated as 1 divided by 24 seconds. A 180-degree window is therefore approximately 20.8 milliseconds; 360 degrees corresponds to approximately 41.7 milliseconds. These are arithmetic conversions, not measurements reported by the article.

A 180-degree shutter is a familiar cinema reference, but it is not a universal quality target. ARRI mentions an angle around 180 degrees in the specific context of camera-to-wall virtual production and artefact-free exposure results; that scoped example does not establish an ideal for generated video or validate the proposal’s adaptive thresholds.

A synthetic window longer than the time between known frames needs additional temporal information or assumptions. At 24 fps, a 360-degree window spans the full approximately 41.7-millisecond frame interval. The article’s one-sample setting for its highest-motion bin makes the implementation details particularly important: the stated angle alone does not explain what image information is integrated, or how occlusions are handled throughout that interval.

The same DEV Community article reports a compact flow estimator at roughly 12 milliseconds per 1080p frame, an inpainting model of about 4 million parameters and roughly 6 milliseconds per flagged region, typical disocclusion below 8% of frame area, and rerouting above a 35% threshold. These figures are the article’s claims; independent corroboration was not found. The account does not establish hardware, a reproducible test setup, the precise meaning of the rerouting threshold, or comparable results from another implementation. It also describes perceived strobing and quality gains without a named independent evaluation or quantitative result.
Official MiniMax material describes H3 in the context of unified multimodal generation. AMD’s H3 technical article, dated August 2, 2026, gives model-level context including flow matching. Neither source documents the named Shadow post-generation pipeline, its adaptive shutter algorithm, or support for 24 fps. Model-level flow matching and optical flow between generated video frames are distinct concepts; one does not verify the other.
How to evaluate a flow-warping implementation
The proposal suggests an engineering direction, but whether it works well depends on the sequence and on how the implementation is tested. A useful evaluation should compare the warped-and-averaged result with a ground-truth exposure or a clearly defined reference, rather than relying only on attractive examples.
