Yuezhuornis yangyuanensis was a crow-sized, flightless avialan from Late Jurassic China. Its short forelimbs, ground-adapted proportions, teeth and hyperextensible sickle claw show that some early bird-line dinosaurs were running predators rather than early versions of modern flying birds.
What was Yuezhuornis yangyuanensis?
Yuezhuornis yangyuanensis is a newly named avialan—an early member of the bird lineage within Dinosauria—not a modern bird. It is known from specimen IVPP V34427, held by the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The fossil comes from the Upper Jurassic Zhenghe Fauna in southeastern China, where the animal lived about 150–148 million years ago.

Liming Xu, Min Wang, Ganmin Lin, Liping Dong, Ke Deng, Xing Xu, Honggang Du, Min Lin, Runsheng Chen and Zhonghe Zhou described it in Nature on 14 October 2026. The team’s classification places it on the avialan branch: close to the origin of birds, but still an unmistakable dinosaur in evolutionary terms.

The “bird” wording is therefore useful but qualified. Avialans include the lineage that eventually produced living birds, while “bird” in everyday language usually means a member of modern Aves. Yuezhuornis belonged to the former, not the latter.

Why scientists conclude it could not fly
Short forelimbs
The fossil’s forelimbs are markedly short. Wings that generate lift generally require substantial forelimb length and associated flight structures; Yuezhuornis instead has a body plan centered on the hind limbs. The Nature study reports that phylogenetic analyses and comparisons with living birds provide “strong evidence for a terrestrial, flightless lifestyle.”
Comparison with living birds
As reported by Live Science, researchers compared limb proportions with 377 living bird species. The closest proportional matches were terrestrial birds rather than flying specialists. Min Wang said the animal was probably about the size of a crow; its reported mass is approximately 1.8 pounds (0.8 kilograms).

These lines of evidence do not mean every detail of its movement is known. They show that its anatomy is inconsistent with a primarily flying lifestyle and fits a ground-running one far better.

The sickle-clawed second toe
The second pedal digit was hyperextensible, meaning it could be held in an unusually elevated position and brought down as a specialized weapon. Its curved claw resembles the enlarged “sickle claw” associated with deinonychosaur predatory dinosaurs. That feature could have helped Yuezhuornis pin, grip or restrain small prey while standing on the other toes.

Teeth and skull anatomy
Slender cranial elements and sparsely spaced teeth add to the predatory picture. Rather than the toothless beak of a modern bird, this animal retained teeth suited to seizing animal food. The combination supports an inference of a small carnivore, although the fossil does not reveal a specific prey species or a complete hunting sequence.
Wang summarized the mosaic anatomy as “the combination of dinosaurs’ and birds’ features,” highlighting the teeth, pectoral girdle and especially the hyperextensible, sickle-clawed second pedal digit as dinosaur-like traits.

Bird-like and dinosaur-like features in one animal
The discovery is important precisely because it is not a simple halfway stage on a straight line toward modern flight. The authors describe a mixture of avialan and troodontid-like cranial characters alongside derived postcranial traits. In practical terms, Yuezhuornis had ancestry tied to birds but a specialized terrestrial design and predatory equipment more familiar from non-avian theropods.

What it changes about early bird evolution
Before this fossil, it was easy to picture early avialans as following one broad trend toward longer wings and increasingly efficient flight. Yuezhuornis shows that the early bird lineage also explored the opposite direction: abandoning flight while specializing for life on the ground.
The Nature authors conclude that several divergent ecological pathways were exploited during the initial diversification of birds. Nature’s accompanying News & Views describes the result as evidence that flightless birds lived alongside known flying species during the Jurassic. Flight was therefore not an evolutionary one-way escalator; it was one option among several in a rapidly diversifying dinosaur group.
How to interpret the discovery without overclaiming
- It was a dinosaur. Avialans are bird-line dinosaurs, so calling it a Jurassic bird is accurate only when that evolutionary context is made clear.
- Flightlessness is an anatomical inference. Short forelimbs, limb-proportion analyses and phylogenetic comparisons strongly support terrestrial locomotion, but no fossil can record every behavior directly.
- The carnivore label is evidence-based but specific prey are unknown. Teeth and the specialized toe indicate an ability to seize animal prey; they do not identify a particular hunting target.
- The size is an estimate. The approximately 1.8-pound (0.8-kilogram) figure is the reported mass estimate, not a direct measurement of a living animal.
Why the “carnivorous pheasant” analogy works—and where it stops
A pheasant-like comparison helps convey a small, ground-dwelling bird form with strong running legs and a terrestrial lifestyle. “Carnivorous” refers to the teeth and predatory claw, while “killer claws” emphasizes the hyperextensible second toe. But Yuezhuornis was not a pheasant, and it was separated from modern pheasants by roughly 150 million years of evolution. The analogy describes ecological appearance, not close taxonomic relationship.
