A 2025 research prototype made from woven cotton fibres inside a gel matrix kept working after mechanical damage demonstrations that included toothpick punctures and cutting. The result is a flexible, methanol-powered fuel cell—not a commercial wearable battery—and its reported performance figures describe the researchers’ device, not an independently verified product specification.
What the researchers built
Yongjiang Yuan and colleagues reported the fibre-shaped direct methanol fuel cell in Nature Materials on 25 August 2025. Its core uses woven cotton fibres enclosed in a gel matrix. It is a purpose-built cell architecture, not ordinary cotton cord that can generate power on its own.

The design uses what the authors call adaptive internal-pressure encapsulation. As the cotton fibres dynamically swell in methanol, the gel-encapsulated structure is intended to reinforce the interface and modulate internal pressure. That mechanism is the basis for the reported combination of flexibility and resilience.

What the prototype demonstrated
The paper’s abstract reports several performance and handling results for the researchers’ device:
- Mechanical endurance: consistent discharge performance after 2,000 continuous flexing cycles.
- Operating temperature: operation across −22 °C to 70 °C.
- Refuelling: full refuelling within one minute.
- Water resistance and damage demonstrations: the study reports water resistance and shows the cell being punctured and cut while retaining function.
- Energy density: 161.36 Wh kg−1, as reported by Yuan and colleagues for their research cell.
These are results reported for the study’s prototype. The cited sources do not provide an independent replication or a consumer-product datasheet, so the energy-density figure should not be treated as a tested specification for a wearable device on sale.

Why puncture and cutting demonstrations matter—and what they do not prove
Flexible electronics can be exposed to bending and accidental damage in ways that rigid power sources are not. Showing that a cell can keep discharging after flexing, puncture, or cutting is therefore relevant to research into conformable power sources. The reported 2,000-cycle result specifically concerns continuous flexing; it is not a claim that the cell can withstand 2,000 cuts or punctures.

These demonstrations also do not establish that a damaged cell is safe to handle, suitable for repeated injury, or ready for everyday use. The available reports do not set out a consumer safety protocol or establish how the prototype performs under every kind of real-world impact, wear, or exposure.

Could it power wearable electronics?
The authors point to lightweight, flexible fuel cells or stacks as possible power sources for high-energy flexible devices. That is a proposed application, not evidence that a commercial wearable product exists. A research prototype’s reported energy density and mechanical demonstrations alone do not establish its full system performance, practical refuelling setup, or suitability for a particular device.
The sources cited here establish a research approach and its reported results, but do not establish a retail product, compatible replacement part, consumer refuelling system, or named commercialization or licensing arrangement. Treat the work as a promising laboratory demonstration rather than a wearable charger you can currently buy.

- The Hydrogen fuel trolley uses zinc particles and food grade citric acid to synthesize hydrogen, and then uses the produced hydrogen and air to generate electricity to drive the trolley.
- During the experiment, please use 80℃ hot water for Combination reaction (if the water temperature is low, the amount of hydrogen and air pressure from the Combination reaction are insufficient, the fuel cell cannot be used for power generation), and then take off the plug of the vent pipe at the lower part of the fuel cell, release the gas in the rubber hose immediately, and then plug it back immediately, so that only pure hydrogen and air are in the fuel cell, so that the fuel cell can generate hydrogen air power.
