Flax Straw Biofuel Study: Torrefaction Had a Stronger Effect Than Steam Explosion

A laboratory study found torrefaction had a stronger effect on flax-straw fuel properties than steam explosion, with trade-offs in pellet durability and moisture uptake.

In a 2025 laboratory study of flax straw, torrefaction changed measured fuel properties more markedly than steam explosion. But the treatment came with a pellet-quality trade-off: as torrefaction temperature rose, pellet density and durability fell. These results apply to one crop residue and tested conditions, not to farm waste generally or to commercial plant performance.

What the study compared

Rawan Wattan and co-authors examined whether flax straw could be processed into solid biofuel using torrefaction or steam explosion, and also assessed pellets made from treated straw. Some pellets included lignin as a binder. The study appeared in Industrial Crops and Products in 2025 as article 121566. Read the study record and author-uploaded full text.

The feedstock was flax straw supplied by Prairie Clean Energy Inc. in Saskatchewan, Canada, and ground to below 18 mesh. Torrefaction trials were conducted at 250°C, 275°C and 300°C for one hour. The paper’s abstract reports that torrefaction increased fixed carbon and higher heating value, while steam explosion produced comparatively minimal changes to biomass characteristics.

Why the result is specific to flax straw

The comparison supports a limited conclusion: under this study’s conditions, torrefaction had a more pronounced effect on the measured fuel properties of flax straw than steam explosion. It does not show that torrefaction is the better process for every agricultural residue, or that it is commercially or environmentally superior overall.

The study reports laboratory measurements, not a head-to-head commercial plant comparison. It does not establish the economics or lifecycle performance of producing fuel from flax straw with either treatment.

How torrefaction temperature affected pellets

As the treatment temperature increased from 250°C to 300°C, relaxed pellet density decreased from 894 to 814 kg/m³, while mechanical durability decreased from 79.6% to 74.2%. The authors attributed the declines to pore development and reduced particle density during thermal treatment. These are results from the tested flax-straw pellets, not general predictions for all biomass pellets.

What the lignin binder changed

Adding 10 wt% lignin improved pellet durability across the torrefaction temperatures tested. However, the lignin-modified pellets took up more moisture: the study reports 23.3–26.3 wt% moisture uptake, compared with 13.8–14.8 wt% for binder-free pellets. The authors linked the difference to lignin’s hydrophilic properties relative to torrefied flax straw. Durability and moisture uptake therefore moved in opposing directions in these samples.

What this means—and what it does not

For this flax-straw experiment, torrefaction showed the stronger change in measured fuel properties, while higher treatment temperature corresponded to lower pellet density and durability. Lignin improved durability but came with greater moisture uptake. Choosing a process for a real fuel supply would require evidence beyond these measurements, including performance and cost under the intended operating conditions.

A separate 2024 technoeconomic analysis models six pelletization scenarios using sawdust and oat straw; those modeled cases do not establish the economics of the flax-straw treatments in Wattan et al.’s study.
