Flatpak vs Snap vs AppImage: Which Linux App Format Should You Use?

Flatpak, Snap, and AppImage differ in how they install apps, manage dependencies and updates, and handle permissions. Choose based on the app’s availability and the controls you want.

Choose Flatpak for repository-managed desktop apps with shared runtimes and configurable sandbox permissions; choose Snap if you want snapd to manage installation and automatic refreshes; choose AppImage when you prefer downloading and running a standalone app file. None is best for every Linux user: start with the format the app’s publisher offers for your distribution, then consider its update controls, permissions, and desktop integration.

How the three formats differ

Format How you install it Dependencies Updates Isolation and integration
Flatpak Install from a configured remote, such as Flathub, using Flatpak tooling. Apps use runtimes for common dependencies; Flatpak can install the required runtime, and multiple runtime versions can coexist. Managed through Flatpak remotes and commands such as flatpak update. Apps run in sandboxes. Permissions and portals can mediate access to selected host resources; apps can export desktop files and icons.
Snap Install and manage through the snapd daemon. Uses a self-contained package model; dependencies can be installed alongside an app. Automatic refreshes are the default. System settings can schedule or hold updates. Confinement is the default unless custom flags or interface connections change it. Interfaces govern access beyond confinement; portals can support specific user-mediated access. GUI apps can integrate with the desktop.
AppImage Download the image, make it executable, and run it; a conventional installation is not required. It is a standalone application image, but the exact packaging varies by publisher. The consulted AppImage documentation does not establish a universal update mechanism. Optional management tools exist. Direct execution is supported, and optional helpers can create launcher entries. The cited documentation does not establish an equivalent default sandbox model.

These are differences in packaging and management, not proof that one format is universally faster, lighter, or more secure. The documentation cited here does not provide comparable performance measurements or a head-to-head security audit.

Choose based on how you want to manage apps

Choose Flatpak for managed desktop apps and explicit permissions

Flatpak suits users who want to install desktop applications from configured repositories and have common dependencies handled through runtimes. Apps are sandboxed, and portals can let them request access to selected host resources. Flatpak’s official documentation explains its basic concepts and installation and update commands; Flathub describes its role as a community-run app repository.

For example, the official CLI documentation uses flatpak install to install an app from a remote and flatpak update to update installed apps and runtimes. Check which remote supplies the app and whether you trust its publisher before installing.

Choose Snap if snapd-managed refreshes suit you

Snap is a fit if you are comfortable with a daemon managing installation, confinement, and updates. Automatic refreshes are on by default, though the system’s settings can schedule or hold them. Snapcraft documents snapd’s role, refresh control, and confinement and interfaces.

Confinement does not mean an app has no access to anything: interfaces govern access to resources outside the confinement, and portals can provide a standard route for certain requests, such as opening a file chooser. If update timing or permissions matter to you, inspect the relevant controls and connections on your system rather than assuming every Snap behaves identically.

Choose AppImage for a standalone file

AppImage is convenient when you want to download an application image, mark it executable, and run it without a conventional package installation. Its official quickstart describes this workflow. Optional tools can add launcher integration or other management, but the cited documentation does not establish one update process shared by all AppImages. Check the publisher’s instructions for the specific app.

Check availability and trust before installing

Flatpak describes its runtimes as distribution-agnostic, Snap documents support across distributions and platforms, and AppImage documentation describes use on Linux distributions. That does not mean every app is offered in all three formats or that every distribution supports every format out of the box. Verify the app’s actual offering and your host system’s support before choosing a format.

  • Publisher and maintenance: confirm who provides the package and whether the offered app version is current. Format documentation alone does not certify a package’s trustworthiness or maintenance.
  • Permissions: check what host resources the app can access and how that access is granted.
  • Updates: decide whether repository-managed updates, snapd’s refresh controls, or publisher-specific AppImage updates fit your needs.
  • Desktop use: consider whether you need exported launchers, portals, or optional integration helpers.

A quick decision rule

  1. If the app you want is available from a Flatpak remote you trust and you prefer repository-managed updates with sandbox permissions, choose Flatpak.
  2. If it is available as a Snap and you are comfortable with snapd’s default automatic refreshes and confinement model, choose Snap.
  3. If you want a standalone file and accept that integration or update management may depend on optional tools or the publisher, choose AppImage.
  4. If more than one option is offered, compare the publisher, version, permissions, and update controls for those specific packages; the format name alone does not settle which package is right for you.
