Flat Ethernet cables are often easier to route through tight spaces or along a wall, desk edge, or furniture. But a flat profile alone does not make a cable faster, more reliable, or more durable than a round one. Compare the exact products’ category, construction, length, and installation ratings instead.
What does cable shape actually tell you?
Flat and round describe a cable’s physical profile, not a complete performance rating. A manufacturer’s product pages show that both shape and internal construction can vary: C-LIGHT lists flat and round Cat 6 options, including shielded and unshielded designs, while NETGEAR’s flat Cat 5e cable has twisted pairs and its own stated specifications.

That means “flat versus round” is not a controlled comparison unless the cables also match in category, length, conductors, pair construction, shielding, and other relevant specifications. The available product information does not establish a universal speed, signal-quality, or durability advantage for either shape.

A flat cable can be easier to fit where a bulky cable is awkward: along a wall or desk edge, around furniture, or through a route with limited clearance. NETGEAR describes its flat cable as easy to run around a table or along a wall. EDIMAX lists carpet, corners, walls, doors, and areas behind furniture as intended routing locations for its flat cable. These are manufacturer-stated use cases, not blanket approval for every cable or installation.

If the route is the main concern, a flat Cat 6 Ethernet cable may be a practical choice for a low-profile run. Check the cable’s length and installation guidance, and consider clips or a cable raceway to keep it in place. Cable management can help organize a route; it does not improve network performance.
Does flat or round mean faster?
No. A cable’s category and the specifications of the particular product are more useful than its shape when evaluating stated performance. For example, NETGEAR lists its flat Cat 5e cable at up to 250 MHz. EDIMAX lists its flat EA8 Cat 8 cable at up to 2000 MHz and up to 40 Gbps. Those are manufacturer specifications for those individual products; they do not show that flat cables generally outperform round cables.

When comparing options, make sure the category and product ratings suit your equipment and intended use. Do not infer a cable’s speed from its profile or compare products with different categories as if shape were the only difference.

What construction and installation details should you compare?
Two cables with the same shape can differ in ways that matter more to a particular installation. C-LIGHT describes flat unshielded Cat 6 as well as round, soft-round, shielded, and unshielded variants. EDIMAX describes U/FTP shielding on its flat EA8 Cat 8 cable. Check the exact product documentation rather than assuming what is inside based on appearance.

- Category and stated performance: Confirm the product’s category and manufacturer specifications.
- Length: Choose a length that reaches without forcing an unnecessarily tight route.
- Conductors and twisted pairs: Check what the manufacturer specifies for the cable’s construction.
- Shielding: Match the product’s shielding to the installation environment and your requirements.
- Connectors and jacket: Verify connector type and any jacket or environmental ratings needed for the route.
- Bend guidance: Follow the minimum bend radius and installation instructions for that exact cable.
- Physical profile: Choose flat or round according to clearance and routing needs.
Are flat cables less durable or harder to bend?
Shape alone does not settle durability. Materials, construction, and how the cable is routed all matter, and product-specific guidance is more reliable than a rule based on profile alone. Avoid sharp kinks and crushing, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Bend-radius values are product-specific. Phoenix Contact lists a minimum bend radius of 4×D for fixed installation and 8×D for flexible installation for one particular round Cat 5 cable. Those figures apply to that product, not to every round or flat Ethernet cable.

How should you choose between two specific cables?
- Check the category and specifications. Confirm that each cable’s stated rating fits the intended connection; do not treat shape as a performance grade.
- Compare like with like. Match length and, where possible, conductor and pair construction, shielding, connectors, and jacket or environmental ratings.
- Check the installation instructions. Look up bend guidance and any stated limits for the route or environment.
- Choose the profile that fits the path. Prefer flat when its low profile helps with clearance or discreet routing; choose round when it better suits the route and product requirements.
- Install without damaging the cable. Avoid kinks and crushing, and secure the run with suitable cable-management hardware where useful.
If the products differ in category or construction, their specifications cannot isolate a shape effect. Compare the features you actually need rather than assuming that one profile is inherently superior.
