Fixing Website’s Security Certificate Error on Windows 11/10

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A website security certificate error on Windows 11 or Windows 10 means your browser cannot fully verify that the site you are visiting is authentic and using a trusted encrypted connection. This can happen because of an expired or misconfigured website certificate, but it can also be caused by incorrect system time, outdated Windows components, browser cache issues, antivirus inspection, VPNs, proxies, DNS problems, or network interference.

These warnings should be treated carefully, especially on banking, email, shopping, work, or login pages. If a certificate warning appears on a sensitive site, do not enter passwords, payment details, or personal information unless you are certain the site is legitimate and the problem has been safely resolved.

What a Website Security Certificate Error Means

A website security certificate error means Windows, your browser, or another security component could not fully verify the identity of the site you are trying to open. Secure websites use HTTPS, which relies on a digital certificate to prove that the connection is encrypted and that the domain name matches the certificate presented by the server. When something does not match, the browser shows a warning instead of loading the page normally.

On Windows 11 and Windows 10, you may see messages such as “Your connection is not private” in Chrome or Edge, “Warning: Potential Security Risk Ahead” in Firefox, or “There is a problem with this website’s security certificate” in older Internet Explorer-based pages. The exact wording varies, but the warning usually points to one of several issues: the certificate has expired, it was issued for a different domain, it is not trusted by your device, or the encrypted connection is being modified by software or a network device.

Certificates are issued by trusted certificate authorities and are checked against trust lists stored by the operating system and browser. If the certificate chain cannot be built from the website’s certificate back to a trusted authority, Windows or the browser may reject it. This can happen after a fresh Windows installation, on an outdated PC, on a corporate or school network that uses inspection certificates, or when a website owner has misconfigured their HTTPS setup.

Common certificate error types

  • Expired certificate: The website’s certificate is past its valid date range. This is usually something the site owner must renew.
  • Name mismatch: The certificate was issued for another domain, such as example.com instead of www.example.com, or for a completely different site.
  • Untrusted issuer: Your PC or browser does not trust the certificate authority that signed the certificate.
  • Incomplete certificate chain: The server is missing an intermediate certificate needed to prove trust.
  • Clock-related error: Your Windows date, time, region, or time zone is wrong, causing a valid certificate to appear expired or not yet valid.
  • Connection interception: Antivirus HTTPS scanning, a firewall, VPN, proxy, public Wi-Fi portal, or malware may be inserting its own certificate into the connection.

Not every certificate warning means a website is malicious, but it does mean the connection has not been verified in the normal way. Treat the warning more seriously on banking, email, shopping, cloud storage, tax, health, work, and government sites. Do not enter passwords, payment details, recovery codes, or personal information on a page showing a certificate warning unless you are certain the site and network are trustworthy and you understand the cause.

In many cases, the fix is simple: correct the PC clock, update Windows and the browser, clear old SSL or site data, or disconnect from a problematic VPN or proxy. In other cases, there is nothing wrong with your computer, and the website administrator must replace or reconfigure the certificate. The next sections walk through these causes from safest and most common to more advanced network and certificate checks.

Check Date, Time, Region, and Time Zone Settings

Incorrect date, time, region, or time zone settings are among the most common Windows 11/10 causes of website security certificate errors. SSL/TLS certificates are valid only between specific start and expiration dates. If your PC thinks it is months or years in the past or future, a valid certificate can appear expired, not yet valid, or untrusted. This can affect Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Outlook, Microsoft Store, and other apps that rely on secure HTTPS connections.

Start by checking the clock in the taskbar. If the time or date looks wrong, fix it in Windows settings rather than only changing it inside the browser. On Windows 11, open Settings > Time & language > Date & time. On Windows 10, open Settings > Time & Language > Date & time. Turn on Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically if they are available. Then select Sync now under additional settings to force Windows to contact an internet time server.

If automatic time zone detection sets the wrong location, turn off Set time zone automatically and choose the correct time zone manually. This is especially useful after travel, dual-booting with Linux, connecting through a VPN, or using a corporate laptop configured for another country. Also check Region under Time & language. The region setting usually does not validate certificates directly, but mismatches can affect sign-in services, browser language redirects, and enterprise policy behavior, which may make certificate-related errors appear on certain portals.

Quick checks to perform

  • Confirm the year: A wrong year is enough to make most HTTPS certificates fail validation.
  • Check AM/PM: A 12-hour offset can trigger errors for certificates that were recently issued or renewed.
  • Select the correct time zone: Do not compensate for a wrong time zone by manually changing the clock.
  • Sync Windows time: Use Sync now after changing time or time zone settings.
  • Restart the browser: Close all browser windows and reopen the site after correcting Windows time.

If Windows cannot sync the time, check your internet connection and try again. You can also verify that the Windows Time service is running. Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter. Find Windows Time, open it, set Startup type to Automatic or Manual, and select Start if it is stopped. After that, return to Date & time settings and use Sync now.

After correcting these settings, reload the affected website. If the certificate warning disappears, the issue was local to your PC’s time configuration. If the warning remains, do not ignore it on banking, email, shopping, cloud storage, work, or government sites. Continue with browser, update, network, and certificate checks before entering passwords or payment details.

Update Windows, Your Browser, and Root Certificates

Outdated system files, browser components, or trusted root certificate stores can cause Windows 11/10 to reject otherwise valid websites. Browsers rely on certificate authorities to verify that a site’s certificate was issued by a trusted source. If your PC does not have the latest trusted root and intermediate certificates, you may see errors such as Your connection is not private, SEC_ERROR_UNKNOWN_ISSUER, NET::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID, or There is a problem with this website’s security certificate.

Start by installing pending Windows updates. On Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update, then select Check for updates. On Windows 10, go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. Install all available quality updates, cumulative updates, and security updates, then restart the computer. Windows Update can refresh certificate trust lists and supporting security components used by Microsoft Edge, Chrome, and other apps that depend on Windows certificate services.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Next, update the browser showing the certificate warning. In Microsoft Edge, open the three-dot menu, go to Help and feedback > About Microsoft Edge, and let it check for updates. In Google Chrome, open the three-dot menu, choose Help > About Google Chrome, then relaunch if prompted. In Mozilla Firefox, open the menu, select Help > About Firefox, and apply any available update. Browser updates often include changes to certificate handling, revoked certificate lists, HTTPS enforcement, and compatibility with newer encryption standards.

Refresh certificate trust on Windows

If Windows and the browser are already current, you can still check whether the certificate store is behaving correctly. Press Windows + R, type certmgr.msc, and press Enter to view certificates for the current user. Most users should not delete or manually import certificates unless instructed by an administrator or a trusted software vendor. Removing the wrong certificate can break secure access to websites, work portals, Wi-Fi networks, VPNs, and email services.

  • For personal PCs: rely on Windows Update and browser updates rather than downloading random “root certificate” files from the web.
  • For work or school PCs: contact your IT administrator if internal websites, VPN pages, or company portals show certificate errors after updates.
  • For older Windows installations: install all supported servicing stack and cumulative updates before troubleshooting deeper certificate issues.
  • For Firefox users: remember that Firefox can use its own certificate store, so updating Firefox matters even when Windows is fully updated.

After updating, close every browser window and reopen the site. If the error disappears in one browser but remains in another, the issue is likely browser-specific. If the warning appears across Edge, Chrome, Firefox, and other apps, the cause is more likely tied to Windows, network filtering, antivirus inspection, DNS, or the website’s certificate itself. Do not continue through certificate warnings on banking, payment, email, cloud storage, or business login pages unless you are certain the site and network are trustworthy.

Clear Browser Cache, SSL State, and Site Data

After confirming that Windows, your browser, and certificate stores are up to date, clear the local data your browser uses when connecting to secure websites. A certificate error can sometimes persist because the browser is reusing old cached files, outdated redirects, stale HSTS information, corrupted cookies, or a saved TLS/SSL session from a previous visit. This is especially common after a website renews its certificate, changes hosting providers, moves from one CDN to another, or fixes a misconfiguration on its server.

Start with the browser that shows the warning. In Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome, press Ctrl + Shift + Delete, choose a time range such as All time, then clear Cached images and files and, if needed, Cookies and other site data. In Mozilla Firefox, open Settings, go to Privacy & Security, and use Clear Data under cookies and site data. If you do not want to sign out of every site, remove data only for the affected domain from the browser’s site settings instead of clearing everything.

Clear the SSL state in Windows

Windows also stores SSL/TLS session information outside the browser. Clearing it can help when mulle browsers show the same certificate warning for a site that should be valid. Open the Start menu, search for Internet Options, and open it. Go to the Content tab, select Clear SSL state, then choose OK. Close and reopen your browser before testing the website again. This does not delete personal files or installed certificates; it only clears cached secure connection session data.

Remove site-specific data and test again

If the error appears only on one website, clear data for that site before making broader changes. In Edge or Chrome, open the affected site, select the icon to the left of the address bar, then open Cookies and site data or Site settings and remove stored data for that domain. You can also visit edge://settings/siteData or chrome://settings/siteData and search for the domain name. In Firefox, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Manage Data, search for the site, and remove it.

  • Restart the browser after clearing cache, cookies, or SSL state so old sessions are not reused.
  • Try a private or InPrivate window to test without most saved cookies and extensions affecting the session.
  • Compare another browser to determine whether the issue is browser-specific or system-wide.
  • Avoid entering passwords, card details, or personal information if the certificate warning remains on a banking, email, shopping, government, or work portal.

If clearing cached data fixes the problem, the website’s current certificate was likely valid but your browser or Windows was holding on to outdated connection information. If the warning returns immediately across different browsers and networks, the cause is more likely related to antivirus inspection, proxy settings, DNS, the router, or the website’s certificate configuration rather than cached site data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review Antivirus, Firewall, VPN, and Proxy Interference

Security tools and network privacy apps can sometimes cause certificate warnings even when the website itself is configured correctly. On Windows 11/10, antivirus suites, firewalls, VPN clients, corporate proxies, ad blockers, and web filtering tools may inspect HTTPS traffic by placing their own certificate between your browser and the website. If that local inspection certificate is expired, missing, blocked, or not trusted by Windows, browsers may show errors such as NET::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID, SEC_ERROR_UNKNOWN_ISSUER, or There is a problem with this website’s security certificate.

Start by checking whether the error appears only on one network or only when a specific tool is enabled. If certificate errors begin after installing or updating an antivirus program, VPN, parental control app, school/work security agent, or proxy tool, temporarily disable only the web protection or HTTPS scanning feature rather than turning off all protection. In many antivirus products, this setting may be named HTTPS scanning, SSL inspection, encrypted connection scanning, web shield, or secure browsing. Close and reopen the browser after changing the setting, then test the same site again.

  • Antivirus web scanning: Open your security suite and look for encrypted traffic scanning. If disabling it fixes the error, update or repair the antivirus installation, then re-enable protection if it works correctly.
  • Windows Firewall or third-party firewall: Review recently added rules that block browsers, DNS services, VPN adapters, or security certificate checks. Restore default firewall rules if you are unsure what changed.
  • VPN apps: Disconnect the VPN and reload the site. If the warning disappears, switch to another VPN server, update the VPN client, or check whether the VPN uses web filtering.
  • Proxy settings: Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Proxy and turn off any proxy you do not recognize. Also check whether a workplace or school device is managed and requires a proxy.

If you are using a work, school, or managed device, do not remove organization certificates or security agents without permission. Many companies intentionally use a trusted internal certificate authority to inspect web traffic for compliance and malware protection. When that setup is healthy, Windows and your browser trust the organization’s root certificate. When it is broken, only the IT administrator can renew the internal certificate, repair the endpoint agent, or correct proxy policies.

Be especially careful when a certificate warning appears on banking, email, cloud storage, government, shopping, or admin login pages. Do not click through the warning just to continue, and do not enter passwords or payment details while the warning is present. If disabling a VPN, proxy, or HTTPS inspection feature makes the warning disappear, treat that as a signal to fix the interfering software rather than ignoring the browser’s protection. For personal devices, update or reinstall the affected security tool; for managed devices, contact the network administrator with the exact browser error code, website address, and whether the issue happens on other networks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix Network, DNS, and Router-Related Certificate Problems

Network issues can make a valid website certificate appear suspicious in Windows 11 or Windows 10. This often happens when DNS sends your browser to the wrong server, a public Wi-Fi login page intercepts the connection, a router has stale settings, or a filtering device changes HTTPS traffic. If the warning appears on several browsers and mulle websites, especially after changing networks or DNS settings, treat the connection itself as a likely cause.

Start by switching networks if possible. For example, disconnect from office Wi-Fi and test the same website using a mobile hotspot. If the certificate error disappears, the original network may be redirecting traffic, blocking secure connections, or using a captive portal. On hotel, airport, school, or coffee shop Wi-Fi, open a plain HTTP page such as http://neverssl.com to trigger the sign-in page, then reconnect to the secure website after completing the portal. Do not enter passwords, payment details, or personal data on a site showing a certificate warning while connected to public Wi-Fi.

Next, reset the local network stack and renew your connection. Open Windows Terminal or Command Prompt as administrator, then run these commands one at a time:

  • ipconfig /flushdns clears cached DNS records that may be pointing to the wrong address.
  • ipconfig /release drops the current IP configuration.
  • ipconfig /renew requests a fresh IP address from the router.
  • netsh winsock reset resets Windows network socket settings that can be affected by VPNs, proxies, or older security tools.

Restart the PC after running these commands, then test the site again. If only one device is affected, this often resolves stale DNS or adapter-level problems. If every device on the same Wi-Fi sees the same certificate warning, focus on the router, DNS provider, or upstream network instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Change DNS servers and check for filtering

Incorrect or filtered DNS responses can send a browser to a block page, a search page, or a security gateway that presents a different certificate than the website expected. In Windows, go to Settings > Network & internet, choose your Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection, open the DNS settings, and test a trusted DNS provider such as 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 from Cloudflare, or 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 from Google. Reopen the browser after changing DNS.

Symptom Likely network cause Practical fix
Certificate warning only on public Wi-Fi Captive portal or traffic interception Sign in to the Wi-Fi portal or use a trusted network
Warning on all devices at home Router DNS, firmware, or ISP filtering issue Restart router, change DNS, update firmware
Browser shows a certificate for a different domain DNS redirection or proxy-style filtering Disable custom DNS filtering and check proxy settings

Also restart your modem and router by unplugging them for about 30 seconds, then powering them back on. Log in to the router admin page and check for firmware updates, custom DNS entries, parental controls, web filtering, or security inspection features. If the router uses an unknown DNS server, remove it and set a trusted provider or your ISP’s default DNS. For work or school networks, contact the administrator instead of trying to bypass inspection policies. If a certificate warning remains on banking, email, shopping, cloud storage, or government websites, stop using that connection for sensitive activity until the network path is trusted again.

When the Website Owner Must Fix the Certificate

Sometimes nothing is wrong with Windows, your browser, DNS, antivirus, or network settings. The certificate error may be caused by a problem on the website’s server, and only the site owner or hosting provider can correct it. If the same warning appears on mulle devices, different browsers, and separate networks, such as your home Wi-Fi and mobile hotspot, the issue is likely on the website side.

Common server-side certificate problems include an expired certificate, a certificate issued for the wrong domain name, an incomplete certificate chain, or a certificate from an untrusted certificate authority. For example, a site may present a certificate for example.com while you are visiting www.example.com, or the administrator may have renewed the certificate but not installed the intermediate certificates required by browsers on Windows 11/10.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Signs the website needs to fix its certificate

  • The warning appears everywhere: the same certificate error shows in Microsoft Edge, Chrome, Firefox, and on another computer or phone.
  • The certificate is expired: the browser’s certificate viewer shows a “valid to” date that has already passed.
  • The name does not match: the certificate is issued to a different domain, subdomain, or wildcard pattern than the address you typed.
  • The chain is incomplete: browsers report that the certificate authority is not trusted, even though the certificate may have been issued by a legitimate provider.
  • Only one website is affected: other HTTPS websites open normally, which makes a local Windows certificate store issue less likely.

You can inspect the certificate before contacting the site. In most browsers, select the padlock or warning icon near the address bar, open the certificate details, and check the Issued to, Issued by, and Valid from/to fields. Do not enter passwords, payment details, recovery codes, personal documents, or admin credentials on a site that is currently showing a certificate warning. On banking, shopping, email, tax, healthcare, cloud storage, or work portals, stop and use an official app, a saved bookmark, or a verified support channel instead.

If you need to report the problem, send the website owner a clear description: the exact URL, the error message shown by the browser, your browser name and version, your Windows version, the time of the test, and whether it happens on other networks. A site administrator may need to renew the TLS certificate, install it on the correct server, add missing intermediate certificates, include all required domain names in the certificate’s Subject Alternative Name list, or fix a load balancer, CDN, hosting control panel, or reverse proxy that is serving the wrong certificate.

For internal company websites, the fix may involve your IT department rather than a public website owner. Corporate portals often use private certificate authorities, device management policies, or SSL inspection. In that case, do not manually trust random certificates from pop-ups or email attachments. Ask IT to confirm the correct root certificate deployment through Group Policy, Intune, endpoint management software, or the organization’s approved certificate installation method.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to continue past a security certificate warning?

Do not continue if you are signing in, making a payment, entering personal details, or visiting a banking, email, work, or shopping site. A certificate warning can mean the connection is not properly encrypted or that something is intercepting the connection. Only proceed if you fully trust the site, understand the risk, and are not entering sensitive information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the certificate error happen on every website in Windows 11 or Windows 10?

If almost every HTTPS site shows a certificate error, the cause is usually on your device or network rather than the websites themselves. Check that your date, time, time zone, and region are correct, then install Windows updates and browser updates. If the problem continues, inspect antivirus HTTPS scanning, VPNs, proxies, DNS settings, or a restricted public Wi-Fi network.

How do I fix a certificate error caused by the wrong date or time?

Open Windows Settings, go to Time & language, and enable automatic time and automatic time zone if available. Click the sync option to update the clock, then restart your browser and reload the website. Even a small date mismatch can make a valid certificate look expired or not yet valid.

Can antivirus software or a VPN cause website certificate errors?

Yes. Some antivirus tools scan encrypted HTTPS traffic by inserting their own certificate, and VPNs or proxies can also interfere with certificate validation. Temporarily disable HTTPS scanning, the VPN, or the proxy to test, then re-enable protection and adjust only the setting causing the problem.

What should I do if only one website shows a certificate error?

Try the site in another browser and on another network, such as mobile hotspot, to confirm whether the issue follows the website. If the warning still appears, the site may have an expired, misconfigured, mismatched, or untrusted certificate that only the website owner can fix. Avoid entering passwords or payment information until the certificate is corrected.

Bottom Line

Website security certificate errors on Windows 11/10 usually point to a trust, time, browser, network, or certificate configuration problem. Start with the safer fixes first: check your date and time, update Windows and your browser, clear SSL/browser data, try another network, and inspect antivirus, VPN, proxy, or firewall settings.

If the warning appears on banking, email, shopping, or login pages, do not bypass it unless you are certain the site and network are trustworthy. When the issue affects only one website, contact the site owner or wait for them to renew or correct their certificate before entering any personal information.
