In LFW211 Lab 7.1, the reported Windows 11 failure when running npm test was caused by passing a Windows drive-letter path to Node.js’s dynamic ESM import(). Convert the resolved path to a file:// URL with Node’s pathToFileURL() before importing it. The workaround below was reported to pass the lab’s assertions in March 2022; check the current lab files as well, since the course forum exchange is from 2022.
Why does Lab 7.1 fail on Windows?
The March 2022 forum report describes Windows 11, Node.js v16.14.0, and a failure running npm test. Node’s default ESM loader received a drive-letter path beginning with f:, rather than a URL it could load. The error explained: “Only file and data URLs are supported by the default ESM loader. On Windows, absolute paths must be valid file:// URLs.”

This points to Windows path handling during module loading, not a problem with the addition assertions themselves. The forum thread is at Linux Foundation Forums: Lab 7.1 ERR_UNSUPPORTED_ESM_URL_SCHEME.

In the lab’s JavaScript file, import pathToFileURL from Node’s url module, resolve the path, and convert it before passing it to dynamic import():
#1 Best Overall
- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
import { pathToFileURL } from 'url'
import { createRequire } from 'module'
import assert from 'assert'
const { resolve } = createRequire(import.meta.url)
const { default: add } = await import(pathToFileURL(resolve('.')).toString())
assert(typeof add === 'function', 'function exported')
assert(add(15, 7) + add(11, 9) === 42, 'correct function exported')
console.log('passed!')
The important change is wrapping the resolved path with pathToFileURL(...).toString(). That turns a filesystem path into a file:// URL suitable for dynamic import, including on Windows. The poster said the assertions passed after making this change; this is a reported forum result, not an independently verified test.

What to check if it still fails
- Check the lab version. The original exchange is from March 2022, and a Linux Foundation responder wrote in April 2022, “thanks @cscharr nicely done! code is being updated”. The forum is discontinued, so compare your exercise with the current LFW211 lab files rather than assuming the old workaround is still needed.
- Check the value passed to
import(). It should be a URL made from the resolved path, not the raw Windows drive-letter path. - Separate loader errors from assertion failures. This specific error occurs while Node is trying to load the module. If the module loads and an assertion fails, that is a different issue and needs its own diagnosis.
