Have a tribe owner or administrator send and accept the invitation, then check offline raid protection, PreventTribeAlliances, alliance-cap settings, and the rules of the server type you are playing on. The procedure below separates each cause so you can fix the right layer without changing unrelated settings.

What “alliances not working” means in ARK
Several different failures are commonly described as an alliance problem:

- The alliance option is missing or cannot be selected.
- An invitation is sent, but the other tribe cannot accept it.
- The invitation appears to succeed, yet the tribes do not see allied colors or alliance chat.
- Allied players or creatures are visible, but a player still cannot use a structure or storage item as though it were owned by their tribe.
These symptoms have different causes. ARK introduced the alliance feature in Patch 235.0, but the server still decides whether alliances are allowed and how many tribes can participate. The game also keeps tribe ownership separate from alliance membership, so a successful alliance never becomes unrestricted shared ownership.
Use this diagnosis order
Check the following in order. Start with the in-game workflow, then move to server configuration and policy. This prevents you from editing an INI file when the real problem is that the wrong person is trying to accept the invite.

- Confirm that an owner or administrator is performing both sides of the action. A regular member may be able to play with allied tribes but may not have the controls needed to create or accept an alliance.
- Identify the server type and its rules. Official, unofficial, and non-dedicated sessions do not give you the same administrative access or policy constraints.
- Check offline raid protection (ORP). The official ARK community documentation states that enabling offline-protection mode disables the ability to create a tribe alliance.
- Check
PreventTribeAlliances. If it is set toTrue, the server blocks tribes from creating alliances. - Check alliance capacity. The server may reject a new alliance because the tribe has reached its alliance limit or the alliance has reached its tribe limit.
- Restart and verify the running configuration. A saved file is not enough if the server has not reloaded it or the administrator edited a different instance.
Complete the Tribe Manager workflow correctly
Who must send the invitation
Open the tribe-management interface with the tribe owner or an administrator account. That person should create the alliance and invite the other tribe. If the menu is absent for an ordinary member, that is normally a permission issue rather than evidence that alliances are disabled.
Who must accept it
The invited tribe’s owner or administrator must accept the request. Ask that person to open Tribe Manager while logged into the invited tribe, rather than attempting to accept from a regular member account. If the request is not visible, cancel any stale request, have the authorized players online at the same time, and send a fresh invitation.

After acceptance, both tribes should show the alliance in their tribe-management information. If the request disappears without producing an alliance, do not assume that the interface completed the operation: continue with the server checks below and then repeat the invitation with the two authorized accounts.

Check offline raid protection (ORP)
ORP is the most important server-side explanation for a missing alliance option. The official ARK community wiki states: “Servers with offline protection mode enabled will disable being able to create a tribe alliance.” In other words, the game can be functioning normally while the server deliberately removes alliance creation.
On an unofficial server
- Open the server’s gameplay configuration in the control panel or on the host machine.
- Find the setting that enables offline raid protection. The exact label depends on the hosting panel and the ORP implementation.
- Disable ORP, save the configuration, and restart the server.
- After the restart, have the tribe owner or administrator test the Tribe Manager workflow again.
Disabling ORP changes the server’s offline-protection behavior, so discuss the rule change with every tribe before applying it. If ORP is required by the server’s design, an alliance cannot be created there while that mode remains enabled; changing accounts or reinstalling the client will not bypass the restriction.
Check PreventTribeAlliances in the server configuration
The PreventTribeAlliances option is an explicit block. The official configuration documentation describes its effect as: “If True, prevents tribes from creating Alliances.” A value of True therefore explains a disabled button or a request that never becomes an alliance.

How to correct the flag
- Stop the server or use its configuration editor’s safe-edit mode.
- Open the
GameUserSettings.inifile used by the running server instance. - Locate
PreventTribeAlliances. Change it toFalse, or remove the blocking entry if the host’s documentation specifies that the default should be used. - Save the file, start the server, and wait until it has fully finished loading.
- Log in with the tribe owner or administrator and send a new invitation.
Do not judge the result immediately after saving. ARK reads server settings at startup, and a managed host may overwrite a manually edited file from a control-panel template. If the value keeps returning to True, inspect the panel’s advanced settings or ask the administrator which configuration source is authoritative.
Check alliance capacity limits
Even when alliances are enabled, capacity settings can reject a new relationship. The official tribe documentation lists a maximum of five alliances per tribe and up to twelve tribes in one alliance. A server administrator can impose lower limits with configuration values.

The five-and-twelve figures are the documented general limits, not a guarantee that every unofficial server uses them. Compare the in-game membership with the values loaded by the server. Remove an obsolete alliance or raise the relevant limit only if the server’s rules permit it, then restart before testing again.

Distinguish a configuration block from a server policy
Official small-tribe servers
Official small-tribe servers prohibit informal alliances. That restriction is a rules decision, not a broken Tribe Manager. The policy was stated in Community Crunch 135 in 2018. If you are on that server type, do not try to work around the rule with an INI edit: players do not control the official configuration, and cooperation that violates the policy can lead to enforcement.
Unofficial dedicated servers
An unofficial administrator can decide whether alliances, ORP, and capacity limits are enabled. The administrator must therefore check the actual loaded settings and publish the server’s alliance policy to players. A setting change on a hosting panel may require a complete stop-and-start cycle before it reaches the game process.
Non-dedicated sessions
In a non-dedicated session, the host controls the session and may not expose the same INI controls as a dedicated server. Confirm which options the host platform supports. If the host cannot disable ORP or the alliance-prevention flag, the practical remedy is to use a session type with administrative access rather than repeatedly reinstalling clients.

If permissions, ORP, the prevention flag, and capacity all look correct, perform a full server restart. A restart is an operational troubleshooting step, not a promise that every alliance bug is solved by rebooting. Its purpose is to force ARK to read the configuration again and to eliminate a stale game process.
- Record the current values of ORP,
PreventTribeAlliances,MaxAlliancesPerTribe, andMaxTribesPerAlliance. - Stop the running server completely; do not rely on a soft map change or player disconnect.
- Confirm that the administrator edited the configuration file or panel profile belonging to this exact server instance, map, and cluster.
- Start the server and wait for it to become joinable.
- Have the two tribe owners or administrators connect, send a new invitation, and test the result.
Dedicated-server deployment is a supported ARK path because it gives the administrator access to the files and settings needed for this verification. On managed hosting, use the provider’s file manager or configuration editor and check whether a startup template regenerates GameUserSettings.ini.
How to verify that the alliance actually works
Visual and communication indicators
Allied players and dinosaurs should be highlighted in cyan, and an alliance chat channel should be available. These are useful confirmation signals because they show that the game recognizes the relationship rather than merely displaying a pending invitation.
Interactions allies may receive
Depending on the structure and server settings, allies can receive selected building interactions, access to powered outlets, trough access, and neutral-creature defense behavior. Test one interaction at a time with a low-risk structure and a small group of creatures rather than moving valuable resources first.
What an alliance does not grant
An alliance does not merge the tribes’ ownership. It does not make every storage container, tame, crafting station, or building freely usable by every allied player. If cyan highlighting and alliance chat work but a particular object remains inaccessible, that may be the intended ownership boundary. Check the object’s tribe permissions and use an explicit transfer or access setting where the game supports one.
Targeted fixes for common symptoms

Preventing the problem after it is fixed
- Write down the server’s alliance policy, ORP status, and capacity limits so new tribes know the rules before forming groups.
- Keep a backup of the working
GameUserSettings.inibefore changing unrelated settings. - After every configuration change, record the time of the restart and test with two authorized accounts.
- When moving between maps or cluster instances, verify that the same alliance-related values are loaded on each server.
- Use alliance chat and cyan highlighting as the first confirmation; test ownership-sensitive structures separately.
Most apparent alliance failures become straightforward once you separate permissions, server policy, blocking flags, and capacity. Correct the applicable cause, restart the instance that actually hosts the session, and then verify both the alliance indicators and the limited nature of allied access.
