- Temporarily disable VPN and proxy (if your environment uses them), then try signing in again.
- Make sure Windows time is correct: Settings > Time & language > Date & time > set Set time automatically to On.
Method 1: Refresh Outlook Sign-In State (Accounts + Prompt)
If Outlook is holding onto a bad login state, removing and re-adding the account can force a clean sign-in prompt.
- Open Outlook.
- Go to File > Account Settings > Account Settings.

- Press Win and search for Credential Manager, open it.
- Go to Windows Credentials.
- Remove entries related to Office/Outlook authentication. Common targets (names vary):
- MicrosoftOffice
- ADAL
- Office
- Outlook
- OneDrive (sometimes shares auth tokens)
- Azure/AD entries
Then:
- Also check Web Credentials and remove any Microsoft/Outlook login-related entries you find.
- Close Credential Manager.
- Restart Outlook and sign in again.
Gotcha: If you remove too broadly, you may sign out of other Microsoft apps temporarily. That’s fine—sign-ins will restore after successful authentication.

Method 3: Restart Office Sign-In Components
Office authentication relies on background services and brokers. If they’re stuck or partially broken, the sign-in UI can white-screen.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- End tasks for OUTLOOK.EXE.
- Reopen Outlook and try sign-in again.
- If it still fails, restart Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime if you use it indirectly (updating WebView2 is covered later). Many environments need WebView2 current to render auth UI.
If you can’t find WebView2 guidance in your environment, jump to Method 8 (update) and Method 5 (disable hardware acceleration).
Method 4: Disable Outlook Add-ins (Test for UI/Authentication Conflicts)
Add-ins can break the sign-in flow—especially ones that touch reading panes, compliance tooling, or password/login UI.
- Open Outlook.
- Go to File > Options.
- Select Add-ins.
- At the bottom, next to Manage: choose COM Add-ins and click Go….
- Uncheck all add-ins and click OK.
- Restart Outlook and attempt the password prompt again.
If it works with add-ins disabled, re-enable them one by one (or in small groups) until you find the offender. Common suspects include antivirus add-ins, CRM add-ins, journaling/archiving add-ins, and screen/meeting integrations.

- Open any Office app like Word or Excel (if Outlook won’t load properly).
- Go to File > Options.
- Select Advanced.
- Scroll to the Display section.
- Uncheck Disable hardware graphics acceleration OR check it depending on wording in your build. The effective action is to disable hardware acceleration.
- Click OK and restart Outlook.
Then retry the sign-in prompt. If you’re using Remote Desktop, also test locally (RDP graphics layers can amplify rendering problems).
Method 6: Run Office Repair (Online Repair First)
When authentication UI components are corrupted, repair is often the most reliable reset. Microsoft’s two-stage repair matters: online usually fixes more.
- Close all Office apps.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365 (or Microsoft Office).
- Click the … menu > Modify.
- Choose Online Repair and click Repair.
- After it completes, reboot and test Outlook sign-in.
If online repair doesn’t resolve it, run Quick Repair or go directly to Online Repair again depending on your environment policy. In managed corporate setups, you may not have full control.

- Disable VPN and proxy temporarily.
- Switch networks (for example, from office Wi‑Fi to a phone hotspot).
- If you use a corporate firewall/SSL inspection, ask IT whether Microsoft login endpoints are allowed without breaking TLS.
- Confirm the machine can reach Microsoft sign-in endpoints over HTTPS (port 443).
Symptom clue: If Outlook’s password prompt fails only on one network or one region, network/security is usually the cause.
Method 8: Update Outlook and Related Components

- Open Outlook (or any Office app).
- Go to File > Office Account.
- Under Product Information click Update Options > Update Now.
- Wait until updates finish, then reboot.
- Update Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime (install the latest available version for your Windows build), then retry sign-in.
If you’re on Windows 10/11 with long deferral, update usually fixes rendering/auth component mismatches quickly.
Advanced: Use Registry/Policy Checks for Sign-In and WebView Dependencies
If your PC is managed by an organization, policy can restrict authentication flows or embedded browser behavior. This can show up as a blank sign-in surface.
Use caution when changing registry keys. Consider capturing current values or using IT support.
- Check whether you’re in a managed device (domain-joined or endpoint management).
- Look for policies that affect Office authentication (sign-in enablement, blocking modern auth, or disabling certain embedded web views).
- If you don’t have a specific policy name, prefer Office updates and Credential Manager cleanup first (Methods 2 and 8), because those are low-risk.

Common Mistakes That Keep It Broken
- Removing the account without clearing credentials. Outlook will re-try using the same broken cached state.
- Disabling add-ins but not restarting Outlook cleanly. Some add-ins load early; make sure Outlook is fully closed.
