Compare the full monthly cost and terms of actual offers—not a national average or a headline promotional rate.
What counts as fixed or mobile broadband?
For a useful comparison, separate three kinds of service that can use different networks and have different terms:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Fixed broadband: Home service delivered over a fixed connection, such as fiber, cable, DSL, satellite, or fixed wireless.
- Fixed wireless home internet: A service intended for a fixed premises and delivered wirelessly, often over a cellular network. Compare its own home-internet plan and disclosure label.
- Phone hotspot service: Internet shared from a phone’s mobile plan. Hotspot use may require a higher-tier plan or be subject to separate data allowances or speed limits. It is not interchangeable with a fixed wireless home-internet plan. The FCC discusses these distinctions in its Communications Marketplace Report.
First identify which of these you are considering. Comparing a phone plan’s hotspot allowance with a home-internet plan without accounting for their different data and speed terms can make the wrong option look cheaper.
How to compare the real cost of plans at your address
Use the FCC’s Broadband Facts label and provider terms to compare eligible offers side by side. Record the same details for each plan:

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
| What to compare | What to check |
|---|---|
| Monthly price | Regular price, any introductory price, how long the promotion lasts, and the price afterward. |
| Fees and charges | Monthly provider fees, one-time charges, and taxes where listed. |
| Contract terms | Whether a contract applies and any early-termination terms. |
| Performance | Typical download and upload speeds and typical latency—not just advertised maximum speeds. |
| Data | Included data and any additional-data charges, speed restrictions, or other consequences of exceeding an allowance. |
| Discounts and equipment | Whether a discount or bundle applies, and whether using your own compatible modem or router changes the cost. |
The FCC label standard includes key price, fee, speed, and data fields; providers also link to information about discounts, bundles, and equipment options. See the FCC’s label guidance and consumer label template.
To compare ongoing cost fairly, distinguish a temporary promotional rate from the price after it ends. Include applicable fees and one-time costs in your comparison rather than assuming the advertised monthly rate is the entire bill.

Check availability—and what the map can’t tell you
- Search your location on the FCC National Broadband Map to find reported fixed and mobile options.
- Contact the provider to confirm that the specific plan is currently available at your address and ask for its current price and terms.
- For a mobile or fixed wireless option, check reception where the service will actually be used. The FCC says the map’s mobile coverage layer does not establish whether service is available indoors.
- If the map appears to show incorrect availability, use the FCC’s challenge process.
The map is a shortlist, not a guarantee of price or in-home performance. Its fixed layer reports technologies such as fiber, cable, DSL, satellite, and fixed wireless; its mobile layer shows reported 3G, 4G, and 5G coverage. It also displays availability and advertised maximum speeds, which do not establish affordability, adoption, or actual performance in your home. Read the FCC’s map guidance for consumers alongside provider confirmation.
How household needs change which plan is affordable
A low monthly bill is not a good value if the plan cannot support the household’s usage. Before choosing, consider how many people and devices will use the connection, what they do online, and whether the plan’s data and performance terms fit that use.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
- If several people regularly stream, work, study, or play online at the same time, compare the plans’ typical speeds and latency as well as their prices.
- If a plan has an allowance or limits hotspot use, check whether the household’s expected use could trigger extra charges or reduced speeds.
- If considering mobile service, verify reception inside the home rather than relying only on reported outdoor or area coverage.
- If equipment affects the bill, ask the provider whether compatible customer-owned equipment is allowed and whether it changes recurring or one-time costs.
These checks help distinguish a lower bill from a plan that actually meets the household’s requirements.
