If YouTube shows “Audio renderer error. Please restart your computer,” first check YouTube and Windows volume and output settings, then restart the browser. If sound is still broken, work through Windows’ audio troubleshooter, device and driver checks, and audio services. The message alone does not establish a single cause or prove that your speakers or headphones are defective.
1. Check YouTube, browser, and Windows sound settings
Start with the checks that can resolve a muted or misdirected audio stream without changing drivers or buying hardware.

- Make sure the YouTube player is not muted and its volume is turned up.
- Check that the browser tab, browser, and Windows volume are not muted. In Windows, open the volume controls and check the app volume if your version shows separate controls for individual apps.
- Confirm Windows is sending sound to the output you intend to use, such as your speakers or headphones. Select the output device from the Windows sound controls, then play the video again.
- If you use a headset, dock, monitor, or external audio interface, check that it is connected and selected as the output.
YouTube’s general audio troubleshooting guidance recommends checking volume and sound settings on both the device and in the browser. Microsoft’s Windows guidance likewise calls out checking the selected output device. If other websites and apps play sound normally but YouTube does not, stay focused on YouTube and browser checks first.
2. Restart the browser, then Windows if necessary
Close and reopen the browser, then reload YouTube and test playback. If the error remains, save open work and restart the PC. YouTube recommends restarting the browser or device for audio problems, and Microsoft includes a Windows restart among its general audio troubleshooting steps.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
Restarting is a troubleshooting step, not a diagnosis: the error message does not tell you which component failed. If the sound problem returns, continue below rather than repeatedly rebooting.
3. Run the Windows audio troubleshooter and check device detection
Start with Get Help on Windows 11
Open the Get Help app and run its audio troubleshooter. Microsoft’s instruction is: “If you are using a Windows 11 device, start by running the automated audio troubleshooter in the Get Help app.” Follow the prompts and test YouTube afterward.

4. Update, reinstall, or roll back the audio driver
Choose the driver action based on what changed and what Windows detects. Avoid treating update, reinstall, and rollback as interchangeable fixes.
- Update: In Device Manager, right-click the audio device and choose Update driver. If Windows does not find a suitable driver, use the support resources for your PC or sound-device manufacturer to identify the correct one.
- Reinstall: If updating does not help, Microsoft’s sound troubleshooting guidance includes uninstalling the audio device in Device Manager and restarting Windows so the device can be detected again. Follow the applicable Microsoft instructions for your Windows version and device.
- Roll back: If the issue began immediately after a driver update, open the audio device’s Properties in Device Manager, go to the Driver tab, and choose Roll Back Driver if that option is available. Microsoft notes that rollback depends on a previous driver version being present.
Do not install a driver intended for a different PC model or audio device. If the manufacturer does not provide a suitable driver, Microsoft’s instructions include Windows’ available driver options; availability depends on the device.

- The issue followed a driver update: Consider rollback only if Device Manager offers a previous driver version.
Microsoft’s audio-stack documentation explains that an application using an audio endpoint in exclusive mode can prevent other applications from using that endpoint while it is open. That makes exclusive access one possible audio conflict, not a confirmed cause of the YouTube error. Do not assume a hardware failure or replace speakers, headphones, or adapters unless you have separately established a hardware fault.
Windows 10 support status
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. As of October 2026, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. The Windows troubleshooting steps above may still apply, but support availability differs from Windows 11.
