A YouTube Live stream that drops after several hours has no single, documented universal cause. The timing alone does not prove that YouTube, the VPS, or a timeout is responsible. First establish whether the encoder stopped sending or YouTube lost its incoming feed, then line up the encoder log, YouTube Live Control Room health messages, and VPS network and resource records at the exact failure time.
What to check first when a VPS stream drops
- Record the event in UTC. Note the disconnect time, how long the stream had been live, whether the encoder process stopped or continued running, whether it reconnected, and what viewers saw. Keep the OBS or FFmpeg log lines around the event, YouTube Live Control Room health messages, and VPS provider metrics or event notices. Remove stream keys and other credentials before sharing logs or opening a support ticket.
- Compare encoder and YouTube status. Check whether the encoder reported an error, high CPU load, or loss of connection, and whether YouTube reported a stream-health issue. If the encoder appears healthy but cannot deliver reliably, investigate the VPS’s outbound connection. YouTube’s troubleshooting guide also distinguishes reports affecting one viewer from problems affecting viewers across a network or across multiple networks: YouTube live-stream troubleshooting.
- Check the VPS path, not just its advertised speed. Review outbound network graphs, sustained throughput, packet or connection drops where available, firewall changes, route changes, resource events, and provider maintenance around the timestamp. A short speed test or a headline port-speed figure does not show whether the VPS maintained the required delivery for hours.
- Make one evidence-based change at a time. Run a private or unlisted test long enough to pass the usual failure interval. Keep the same logs and health observations, change only a setting or path implicated by the evidence, and compare the next run. A VPS migration makes sense only if records point to the current provider, route, capacity, policy, or support as the problem.
Check encoder settings against YouTube’s guidance
Compare the encoder’s actual output profile with YouTube’s current live encoder settings. YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS, specifies supported codecs and constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. A mismatch can prompt stream-health warnings or playback problems; it is not, by itself, proof of why a feed fails after hours.

Bitrate and sustained VPS egress
Bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264 at 1080p and 60 fps, YouTube’s current settings page lists 6 Mbps as the minimum and 17 Mbps as the recommended bitrate. For AV1 or H.265 at the same resolution and frame rate, it lists 4 Mbps minimum and 12 Mbps recommended. These are configuration recommendations, not evidence that a particular bitrate caused this disconnection.
Check the bitrate actually configured and whether the VPS can sustain it outbound, with room for variation. If logs or network graphs show dropped frames or unstable delivery, a lower profile may be a useful controlled test. OBS’s connection guide suggests starting at 75% of total upload speed, but that is a general starting point from OBS’s 2024 guide, not a YouTube requirement or a guarantee for a VPS connection. Do not treat a brief throughput test as proof of long-duration capacity.
#1 Best Overall

Keyframes, codecs, and stream consistency
Use the encoder’s health output and YouTube’s displayed warning to check codec support, frame rate, keyframe frequency, missing or multiple audio/video streams, and primary/backup consistency. The YouTube Live API health issue list describes these categories; it notes that keyframe intervals above four seconds can cause buffering. A keyframe warning is a lead to investigate, not a conclusion to draw from the multi-hour timing alone.
For preflight, use realistic content with audio and motion, as YouTube recommends, and watch stream health while it runs. Inspect a local archive if one is available; it can help distinguish an encoder/output problem from an ingest or viewer-side issue.

Verify the RTMPS endpoint and stream key
Retrieve the current ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, then confirm the encoder is using those exact values and supports the selected protocol. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the stream connection. Its RTMPS instructions say that for SSL errors, check the server and protocol and specify port 443 if needed; for a “connection timed out” message, verify the URL and RTMPS support in the encoder. These checks can resolve endpoint or protocol errors, but a timeout check does not explain an otherwise stable connection that fails hours later.
Use logs and health messages to locate the failure
OBS describes dropped frames or intermittent disconnections as a network issue between the encoder and remote ingest, and lists unstable connectivity or a bitrate beyond sustainable capacity among possible explanations. Its guide also identifies firewall or security software, VPNs, network-optimization software, and network faults as possibilities. For a VPS, focus on applicable server-side evidence: egress and route records, firewall rules, resource pressure, and provider maintenance. Desktop hardware checks may not apply.

Read the encoder log and YouTube health message at the same UTC timestamp. If the encoder process exits, investigate its error and VPS resource events. If it keeps running but loses ingest, focus on the outbound path, endpoint, and protocol. If encoder and ingest remain healthy while viewers report trouble, compare the pattern of affected viewers and networks using YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance. These distinctions narrow the investigation; they do not establish a root cause without the corresponding records.

- OBS reports dropped frames or intermittent disconnections: inspect sustained VPS egress, route stability, firewall and provider events, and whether the configured bitrate is supportable. Test a lower bitrate only as a controlled comparison.
- YouTube reports a codec, bitrate, frame-rate, or keyframe issue: correct the specific setting flagged, then run a new preflight and monitor health. Do not change unrelated settings at the same time.
- The encoder shows SSL or connection-timeout errors: verify the current URL and key, RTMPS support, and the protocol/port configuration described in YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
- The encoder looks healthy but YouTube loses the feed: investigate the VPS-to-ingest path and provider records at the drop time; an encoder dashboard alone cannot confirm outbound stability.
- Only some viewers report a problem: compare who is affected and which networks they use before changing the VPS encoder. YouTube’s troubleshooting guide addresses viewer-side patterns as well as encoder and connection issues.
- The stream fails at roughly the same elapsed time repeatedly: treat the repeatable interval as a useful correlation clue. Check scheduled provider maintenance, resource or network events, and any encoder or orchestration actions at that time; do not assume a universal YouTube few-hour timeout.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a continuous YouTube stream rather than maintaining an encoder on a VPS, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos or playlists. Upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home; it streams the upload at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded video, not a live camera feed. Start the free first day.
