Fix Wowza-to-YouTube ingest errors by locating the failure first: check whether the source reaches Wowza, whether Wowza’s Stream Target connects to YouTube, and whether YouTube accepts the incoming feed. A Wowza target marked Active confirms that Wowza is pushing to the target; it does not confirm that YouTube accepts the feed’s format or settings. Use YouTube Live Control Room’s preview and exact error message to distinguish those cases.
Start by locating the failing stage
There are three points to check: the encoder or camera feeding Wowza, the Wowza Stream Target sending to YouTube, and YouTube’s ingest and encoder checks. Note the Wowza target status and whether YouTube shows a preview. Those two observations narrow the problem before you change settings.

| What you see | What it indicates | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Wowza target is Waiting | The configured source is not connected, or destination connection initialization is still in progress. | Check that the source is running and that the incoming stream appears in Wowza. |
| Wowza target is Error | Wowza could not connect to the YouTube destination. | Confirm the source is connected, then review the destination settings and possible destination-server issues. |
| Wowza target is Active, but YouTube shows an ingest error or no usable preview | Wowza is pushing to the target, but that alone does not establish that YouTube accepts the feed’s encoding or bitrate. | Read the exact Live Control Room error and check the named encoder setting. |
Wowza says target status refreshes automatically when an application has fewer than 100 targets; with more than 100, select Refresh. Wowza’s YouTube streaming guide describes the target setup and status checks.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Verify the Wowza source and YouTube target configuration
- Check the incoming source. Start the H.264 camera or encoder feeding the Wowza application. In Wowza Streaming Engine Manager, inspect Incoming Streams and confirm the input is Active. If it is not, troubleshoot the encoder-to-Wowza connection before changing YouTube settings.
- Check that Stream Targets are enabled. Confirm Stream Targets are enabled globally and that the individual YouTube target is enabled. Wowza’s instructions call for a restart when prompted so the change takes effect.
- Compare the destination host and application with YouTube. In YouTube Live Control Room, open the event’s stream settings and compare the Stream URL with the host and application configured in Wowza. In Wowza’s illustrated RTMP URL, the application name is the part after the host.
- Use the generated stream key value. Wowza’s Destination Stream Name must contain the generated key value, not merely the display name you gave the key. Wowza describes the generated value as a hidden 20-character alphanumeric key. Treat it as a credential; do not publish it in screenshots, logs shared publicly, or support requests.
- Check the YouTube preview. Open the event in Live Control Room and see whether YouTube displays the incoming feed. This is a separate check from Wowza’s outgoing target status.
Match YouTube’s error to the encoder setting
Use the wording YouTube displays rather than changing several settings at once. YouTube groups ingest problems into format, bitrate, video settings, keyframe frequency, and resolution. Its guidance specifies H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, bitrate and resolution matching the selected ingestion settings, and a keyframe interval of two seconds. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and error guidance.

Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
- Format error: Confirm video is H.264 and audio is AAC or MP3. Check that the encoder is sending the format selected for the event.
- Bitrate error: Compare the encoder’s configured bitrate with the setting YouTube identifies for the stream. Correct the mismatch indicated by the error rather than choosing an arbitrary value.
- Resolution or video-settings error: Confirm the output resolution and video settings match the selected ingestion settings and the error message.
- Keyframe-frequency error: Set the keyframe interval to every two seconds, as YouTube’s guidance specifies.
If YouTube reports “Incorrect stream format,” follow the format diagnosis; if it says there is an error starting the encoder, use YouTube’s third-party encoder troubleshooting steps rather than assuming the stream key is the cause.
Check encoder, logs, CPU, and network health
If the target configuration and YouTube’s named encoding requirements look correct, determine whether the encoder or connection is failing intermittently. YouTube advises updating encoder software, checking audio and video in both the encoder and local archive, reviewing encoder errors and CPU load, and testing outbound internet when the encoder output appears healthy. If the outbound connection is problematic, YouTube directs users to their ISP. Wowza also recommends reviewing error and access logs; connection and missing-input errors can originate in the network or source.

For a third-party encoder start error, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says to obtain a new key in Live Control Room and update the encoder. A channel owner or manager can reset the key. If you replace it, update the destination configuration in Wowza as well as the encoder or other relevant sender; an old key left in either place can prevent the stream from connecting. Do not reset it as a general first step when the error points to format, bitrate, resolution, or keyframe settings. See YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance.

Check RTMPS or HLS only if your stream is configured to use it
RTMPS
YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL. If the configured path uses RTMPS and reports a connection error, verify that the destination URL is the RTMPS URL rather than RTMP, try port 443 where needed, and confirm the encoder supports RTMPS. Do not switch a working protocol just because RTMPS is available. YouTube’s explanation is at Encrypt your stream using RTMPS. Wowza’s documented YouTube Stream Target is RTMP-based; the cited documentation does not establish that every Wowza target configuration supports RTMPS.
HLS
HLS is not a generic reconnect fix. YouTube describes it as segment-based and higher-latency than RTMP, with its own segment format, duration, playlist, and HTTPS requirements. Consider HLS only when it is deliberately selected for a supported use, such as ingesting codecs that RTMP does not support or HDR. Check YouTube’s HLS ingest requirements before changing protocols.

Continuous-stream checks and ending a test
For a long-running feed, keep enough information to tell whether a recurring interruption begins at the Wowza input, the Wowza target, or YouTube ingest. Record the target status, YouTube’s exact error text and preview state, and the relevant log entries. The right fix depends on those observations; without them, there is no single continuous-stream-specific cause to assume.
For a test using YouTube’s documented encoder workflow, stop sending content and end the stream in Live Control Room. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that detail is not a guarantee about every Wowza deployment. See YouTube’s encoder instructions.
