If WordPress stopped loading immediately after a MySQL password change, the most likely cause is a mismatch: MySQL now expects the new password, while the live WordPress installation is still sending the old one from wp-config.php. Update the production file, verify every database connection field, and then test the site before investigating less common causes such as privileges, server downtime, quotas, or custom code with its own credentials.

Why changing a MySQL password can take WordPress offline
WordPress does not discover a database password automatically. Each installation reads its connection settings from wp-config.php, including the database name, database username, database password, and database host. When you reset the password for that MySQL user, the database begins rejecting the old password immediately. WordPress continues using the old value until the file is updated, so the front end and /wp-admin/ can both fail with an “Error establishing a database connection” message.

WordPress documentation describes an error in wp-config.php as the usual cause of this message and specifically instructs administrators to verify the database name, username, password, and host. A password change therefore requires two coordinated actions: change the MySQL account credential and change the matching value in the production WordPress configuration.

Do not assume that a hosting-panel password change was the relevant one. A hosting account login, a control-panel database login, and the MySQL user assigned to WordPress can be different accounts.
What to check before editing anything
Confirm which MySQL account was changed
In the hosting panel or database management screen, identify the exact MySQL username attached to the WordPress database. Compare it with the value assigned to DB_USER in the live wp-config.php. If the reset affected another database user, changing WordPress’s configuration to that password will not help.

- Record the exact MySQL username, including any hosting-provider prefix.
- Copy the new password directly from the password-reset result or password manager instead of retyping it.
- Check whether the host supplied a special database hostname or port.
Make a backup of the configuration file
Download or copy wp-config.php before opening it for editing. WordPress migration guidance recommends keeping a backup copy before configuration changes. Store the copy outside the public web directory and do not paste the password into tickets, chat messages, screenshots, or public repositories.
Locate the production file, not a staging copy
The file used by the live site is in the WordPress root directory. Depending on the host, reach it through the file manager, FTP, or SSH. A common mistake is editing a staging installation, an old backup, or a separate document root while the domain points elsewhere. Confirm the path by checking that the directory also contains the live installation’s WordPress files and folders.

How to update the WordPress database password safely
- Open the live
wp-config.php. Use the host’s file manager, FTP, or SSH and open the file in a plain-text editor. Do not use a word processor that can add formatting or alter quotation marks. - Find the database constants. Locate the existing definitions for
DB_NAME,DB_USER,DB_PASSWORD, andDB_HOST. WordPress’s configuration reference identifies this file as the root-level file containing database connection information. - Replace only the password value first. Preserve the existing constant name, quotation marks, semicolon, and surrounding PHP code. For example, keep the structure
define( 'DB_PASSWORD', 'new-password' );and replace only the value between the quotes. - Compare all four values with the hosting panel. A password reset can expose an older username, database, or host entry that was already wrong. Verify the complete set rather than assuming only the password matters.
- Add a required nonstandard port to
DB_HOST. If the provider specifies a port other than the default, use the host-and-port format supplied by that provider, such asdb.example.net:3307. Do not invent a port number. - Save the file without changing its encoding or PHP syntax. Keep the existing
definestatements, quotes, parentheses, and semicolons intact. A malformed line can produce a blank page or PHP error instead of a database error. - Upload the file to the same production path. If you edited a local copy, transfer it back to the live document root and confirm that the upload completed. Check file permissions if the host reports that the file cannot be read.
- Test the public site and the administration area. Open the home page and a known
/wp-admin/URL in a private browser window. Test both because a partial failure can point to custom code or caching rather than the core connection.
Verify every database field instead of only the password

Values are case-sensitive. A password containing a quote or other special character must remain valid PHP inside the existing quoted string; if you are unsure how the character is represented, use the host’s documented value and preserve the file’s established syntax rather than experimenting in production.
What to do after the credentials are corrected
Test before clearing caches
Once both the front end and /wp-admin/ load, clear only the relevant page or object caches if the old error page remains visible. Browser cache cannot repair invalid server credentials, so clearing it before the database connection works only hides the actual sequence of events.

If WordPress core loads but one dashboard screen, search feature, report, or front-end widget fails, the main wp-config.php connection may already be fixed. Treat that symptom as a separate connection problem and inspect the component responsible instead of repeatedly changing the core password.
If WordPress still says “Error establishing a database connection”
Recheck the complete connection tuple
Return to DB_NAME, DB_USER, DB_PASSWORD, and DB_HOST as a group. Compare each character with the host’s current database details. Confirm that any required nonstandard port is included in DB_HOST. One correct field does not compensate for another incorrect field.

Ask the host to verify service availability
If the values are correct, contact the host and ask whether the database server is running and reachable from the web server. WordPress lists server availability and hosting quotas among possible causes of a database-connection failure. Ask whether an outage, suspended service, full quota, or maintenance event coincided with the password reset.
Verify the user’s privileges
A password can be valid while the account lacks access to the selected database. Ask the host to confirm that the MySQL user still has the required privileges on DB_NAME and that the password reset did not detach the user from the database. This is especially important when the account was recreated rather than simply assigned a new password.

Some hosting environments provide a database hostname, socket, or port that differs from the value used by another application. Use the endpoint shown for this account and installation. Do not substitute a guessed hostname because another site on the same server uses it.
If WordPress shows the installation screen
An installation screen after a credential change usually means WordPress cannot find or read the existing configuration. Do not delete, rename, or move wp-config.php to make the screen go away. A documented support case records that removing the file caused WordPress to start the installation routine.

Restore the backup if necessary, confirm that the file is in the production WordPress root, and check that it contains valid definitions for all four database settings. Verify that the web server user can read the file. Starting the installer on an existing site risks creating a confusing second configuration rather than repairing the original connection.

A blank page can result from a PHP syntax error introduced while editing the file, a fatal error in a plugin or theme, or a database failure that is being suppressed. Do not keep changing credentials blindly.
- Inspect
wp-content/debug.logif WordPress debugging is already enabled. - Check the PHP and web-server error logs supplied by the host.
- Look for a parse error that identifies the edited line in
wp-config.php. - Compare the live file with the backup and restore the original syntax before reapplying only the necessary password change.
- After diagnosis, disable public error display so visitors do not see credentials or stack traces.
Enable debugging according to the environment’s normal procedure and restrict log access. The goal is to capture the actual database or PHP error, not to expose diagnostic output on the public site.
If only a plugin, theme, or custom feature fails
WordPress core normally uses wp-config.php, but custom code can open a separate database connection. A support case documented a custom plugin with its own connection file that also required the new password.
Search the site’s custom plugins, must-use plugins, themes, deployment environment files, and secret managers for another database hostname, username, or password. Use the component’s documented settings rather than changing core constants to accommodate it. If a deployment system injects environment variables at release time, update the secret there and redeploy; editing a generated file may be overwritten on the next deployment.
- If the entire site and dashboard fail, start with the live
wp-config.phpand host connection. - If core pages work but one feature fails, inspect that feature’s own connection settings.
- If the error returns after every deployment, check the deployment secret or template for the old password.
How to use logs without creating a security problem
Logs distinguish authentication failures from syntax errors, unreachable servers, and application-level failures. Check wp-content/debug.log for WordPress-level messages and the PHP or web-server logs for parse errors and connection failures. Record the timestamp and exact message so the host can correlate it with database service events.

Never publish a log containing the database password, connection string, or secret-manager output. After troubleshooting, turn off public error display and remove temporary diagnostic settings that are not required for ongoing monitoring.

Preventing the next password-change outage
- Keep an encrypted backup of
wp-config.phpand document where the live copy resides. - Record which MySQL user, database, host, and port belong to each production installation.
- Change the database password during a maintenance window when you can update the configuration immediately.
- Search custom code and deployment settings for secondary database connections before rotating credentials.
- Test both the public site and
/wp-admin/after the change. - Keep access to recent PHP, web-server, and WordPress logs so a failure can be diagnosed from evidence rather than guesses.
The repair is complete when the live WordPress installation connects with the new MySQL password, the public site and administration area work, and any custom component that maintains its own connection has been updated separately. If those checks pass but the site still cannot connect, the remaining investigation belongs with the host’s database service, quota, endpoint, or privilege configuration rather than with browser caching.
