Fix “WMIC Is Not Recognized” in Windows: What to Do

The WMIC command-not-found error may reflect its removal in Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2. Check your release, then use PowerShell for the WMI task or troubleshoot availability on older versions.

The error “WMIC is not recognized as an internal or external command” means Command Prompt cannot find the wmic utility. On Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2, that may be expected: Microsoft says WMIC was removed starting in August 2026 and cannot be added back as a Feature on Demand. Use PowerShell for WMI instead. On older Windows releases, check the version before deciding whether WMIC should be available.

What the error means—and what it does not mean

WMIC is a legacy command-line utility for working with Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI). The error indicates that the shell cannot locate the wmic executable. It does not, by itself, show that WMI is broken or unavailable. Microsoft says the deprecation applies to WMIC, not to WMI itself: Microsoft Learn: WMI command-line (WMIC) utility.

First check your Windows version

Before trying to install WMIC, identify the Windows release. Open Settings > System > About and check the Windows specifications, or run winver from Start or a command prompt.

Windows 11, versions 24H2 and 25H2

Microsoft’s current removed-features guidance says WMIC was removed from Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 starting in August 2026 and is no longer installable as a Feature on Demand on those versions. Reinstalling the capability is therefore not a fix for these releases; use a PowerShell WMI workflow for the task instead. See Microsoft’s Windows client removed-features page.

Microsoft’s Features on Demand documentation still lists a WMIC capability and says it is not preinstalled starting with Windows 11 24H2. Read that general listing alongside the later, more specific removal statement: for 24H2 and 25H2, Microsoft says the capability cannot be added back. The listing is at Available features on demand.

Older Windows releases

Do not assume the 24H2-and-later removal applies to an older release. WMIC availability varies by Windows version, and its absence is not enough to identify the cause. Check the exact release and its current Microsoft servicing documentation before attempting to enable or install a capability. The Features on Demand page describes the WMIC~~~~ capability, but that general information should not be treated as proof that it is available on every release.

Use PowerShell for the WMI task

Microsoft identifies Windows PowerShell for WMI as the successor direction for WMIC. There is no guaranteed universal one-line replacement: the correct PowerShell command depends on the WMI class, properties, or action used by the original command. Microsoft’s overview is in its WMIC utility documentation, and its WMIC command reference can help you identify what an existing command was doing.

  1. Identify the original operation. Note the WMIC verb, class, properties, filters, and any action or remote target in the command. If it came from a script, inspect how the script uses the output.
  2. Choose the corresponding WMI workflow. In PowerShell, select the relevant class and operation rather than substituting a command by name alone. The required permissions and remote-access setup can differ by operation.
  3. Check the output before updating dependent scripts. WMIC and PowerShell workflows can structure and format data differently. Verify that downstream scripts receive the fields and values they expect.

Microsoft’s Windows 11 26H2 IT-pro release notes also state that WMIC has been removed from Windows 11 24H2 and above: What’s new in Windows 11, version 26H2 for IT pros.

If WMIC should be available on your release

On a system where the exact Windows release is expected to include WMIC, check whether the executable exists and whether the shell can discover its location. This is a general command-not-found troubleshooting check, not a confirmed diagnosis for every machine.

  • Try where wmic in Command Prompt. If it returns a path, try running the executable by that full path.
  • If no path is returned, check the Windows release and its servicing guidance before attempting to restore the utility.
  • If the executable exists but a command prompt cannot find it, investigate whether its directory is discoverable through the current shell’s PATH. Avoid changing system PATH entries until you have confirmed the executable’s actual location.

What to change in legacy scripts

For scripts that still call WMIC, plan a task-specific migration rather than a blanket text replacement. Confirm that the PowerShell workflow covers the same WMI class or operation, produces suitable structured output for the next step, and runs with the permissions and remote-access configuration the task needs. Compatibility is command-specific; a one-to-one translation cannot be assumed.
