Why Windows 11 Stops Updating
Windows Update is a chain of components. When one link fails, Windows 11 can show symptoms like “Downloading…”, “Pending restart”, “Something went wrong”, or a repeated error/rollback.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Corrupt update cache (SoftwareDistribution/Catroot2) prevents new packages from applying.
- Broken system files cause DISM/SFC repairs to be needed before updates can stage correctly.
- Update services (BITS, Windows Update, Cryptographic) get stuck or fail to start.
- Third-party security or VPN filters can interfere with download and verification.
- Disk issues or low free space break staging and installation.
- Policy/driver blocks can prevent a particular update from installing.
What You Need Before You Start
Before you run repairs, do these quick checks so you don’t waste time on the wrong fix.

- 10 Pack USB Sticks: 10 pieces of USB flash drives are fit for a variety of scenarios. Whether the flash drives USB are used as school supplies for high school students to backup data storaged in USB jump drives or music USB flash drive for car, zip drive can meet the basic storage needs. USB drive pack of 10 has a higher cost performance. USB flash drive pack of 10 is suitable for ordinary users with appropriate needs, but also for special groups such as companies, schools or other organizations that need a large number of U disks. In short, thumb drives can meet the needs of different customers.
- Swivel Design: With the 360° swivel design, all the ports of the thumb drives 10 pack can be hidden inside the metal casing. When needed, simply swivel the casing gently and the ports will automatically expose, making it convenient for you to insert and remove. This design is not only fashionable and beautiful but also more user-friendly, whether you'd like your flash drive for photos, flash drive for video storage, or memory sticks for computers. In addition, the swivel design can effectively protect the interface from damage and pollution, increasing the service life of the flash USB drive.
- Portability: The small hole on the thumbdrive USB is designed for lanyards, which is convenient to carry. Besides, the USB flash drive keychain can also be tied through the small hole to prevent loss. This design is very thoughtful and reflects the humanized design concept of the memorias USB flash drive.
- Plug and Play: You can use the computer storage flash drive immediately for data storage or backup without any additional installation after inserting it into the computer. This plug and play feature makes the laptop storage drive a very convenient external ssd. You can copy the required data files to the external drive at any time without worrying about computer system compatibility issues. In addition, the design of the external flash drive enables it to be quickly recognized by the system after being inserted into the computer. (NOTE: Please check if your device has a USB-A port before purchasing. If not, a USB-C hub is needed.)
- FAT32 format: The default system format for 8GB flash drive is FAT32. FAT32 USB flash drive is widely applicable, such as in televisions, DVD players, vehicles, printers, embroidery machines, etc. Be patient if you have problems with system recognition. It may take some time for initial recognition, but it will happen.
- Restart first: if you’ve already been getting stuck messages for hours, a reboot clears transient service states.
- Confirm free space: aim for at least 20 GB free on the system drive (C:). Some feature updates need more.
- Disconnect non-essential peripherals: unplug USB hubs, printers, extra drives (keep keyboard/mouse).
- Temporarily disable VPN/proxies: if you use one, turn it off and re-test Windows Update.
- Check date/time: go to Settings > Time & language > Date & time and ensure it’s set to automatic.
If you can, note the update attempt and any error code shown in Settings > Windows Update (for example, 0x800f081f, 0x80248007, 0x80070002, 0x8007000d).
5 Proven Solutions to Fix Windows 11 Not Updating
Apply these in order. Most systems are resolved by Solution 2 or Solution 3, and the remaining cases typically need the manual component reset or an offline install path.
Solution 1: Run the Update Troubleshooter and Restart Update Services
Start with the built-in tools because they handle common service states and detection problems without heavy changes.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and click Run.
- Follow the prompts, then reboot.
After reboot, check services so they aren’t stuck. Press Win + R, type services.msc, press Enter.
- Locate Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) and Windows Update.
- For each, set Startup type to Automatic (or Automatic (Delayed Start) for BITS if shown).
- Click Start if they aren’t running.
- Then check Cryptographic Services and ensure it’s running.
Try Settings > Windows Update again. If it still stalls, move to the cache and component fixes.
Solution 2: Clear the Windows Update Cache (SoftwareDistribution + Catroot2)
This is the most common fix when updates download but fail to install, or when they keep looping on the same attempt.

If the cache reset works, you’ll usually see updates begin downloading within minutes. If it still fails, the underlying system components may be broken.
Solution 3: Repair System Files and the Update Stack (DISM + SFC)
When Windows Update relies on damaged components, DISM and SFC can restore the health required to stage and install updates.
- Open Windows Terminal (Admin).
- Run DISM first:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Let it complete fully. Even if it pauses at a percentage, don’t interrupt it.
- Run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
- Reboot and re-check for updates.
If you have a consistent feature update failure, the repair sequence is still useful because it fixes component store corruption that often appears as 0x800f081f or 0x8007000d.
Solution 4: Reset Windows Update Components Manually (BITS, Windows Update, Cryptographic)
If the earlier steps don’t move the needle, do a full component reset. This targets stuck or corrupted registrations that the troubleshooter might not repair.

- Start the services again:
net start cryptsvc
net start msiserver
net start wuauserv
net start bits
- Reboot and try Windows Update.
If manual reset works, you’ll often eliminate stubborn failures that keep returning the same error code.
Solution 5: Install the Update via Microsoft Update Catalog or an In-Place Repair
When Windows Update won’t reliably complete, bypass it. This is also the safer route if you suspect a specific package download is corrupted.
Option A: Install a specific update from Microsoft Update Catalog
- Go to the Microsoft Update Catalog site in your browser.
- Search using the update ID or KB number you need (example format:
KB503xxxx). - Download the correct package for your architecture (most Windows 11 desktops are x64).
- Double-click the downloaded file and follow the prompts.
- Reboot and verify in Settings > Windows Update or Installed updates.
If you don’t know the KB number, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history and look for the latest failed entry.
Option B: In-place repair install (keeps files/apps)
If your system repeatedly rolls back updates, a repair install can restore the base OS components. This typically preserves installed apps and personal files when you choose the right options.
- Download the latest Windows 11 installation assistant or official Windows 11 ISO from Microsoft.
- Run it while on the affected PC.
- Choose the option to keep personal files and apps when presented.
- Let the process complete, then check for updates again.
This is heavier than the other methods, but it’s one of the highest success paths when Windows Update is fundamentally broken.

- Try a clean Windows Update retry: after each major fix (cache clear, component reset, repair), reboot and attempt once.
- Disable third-party antivirus: temporarily turning it off can prevent download interception. Re-enable after testing.
- Check disk health: if your drive is failing, updates can’t stage. Consider running a SMART check or Windows drive diagnostics.
- Use a different network: try Ethernet or a different Wi-Fi to rule out DNS or router filtering.
Still stuck? Look at the specific error code. Many codes map to a small set of root causes like missing prerequisites, corrupt files, or servicing stack issues.
Common Errors and Their Meaning (Quick Guide)
Use this list to decide which fix to prioritize. Error codes vary by update type (cumulative update, servicing stack, feature update), but these are the most commonly seen patterns.
| Error code | Typical cause | Best fix to try first |
|---|---|---|
0x800f081f |
Component or system file corruption; servicing stack issues | Solution 3 (DISM + SFC) |
0x80070002 |
Missing files during update staging | Solution 2 (clear update cache) |
0x80248007 |
Update service connectivity or Windows Update components issues | Solution 1 then Solution 4 |

If you’re facing repeated rollback without a clear error, the repair install path (Solution 5B) is often the fastest way to stop the cycle.
FAQ: Windows 11 Not Updating
Why does Windows 11 stay stuck at Downloading or Pending restart?
It usually points to a stalled Windows Update service (or a stuck cached package). Solution 1 (troubleshooter + service restart) and Solution 2 (cache clear) fix most of these cases.

Do I need to update in order, or can I install any KB immediately?
For cumulative updates, you generally can install the latest package. For feature updates and servicing stack components, order matters more. If you’re unsure, use Windows Update history to identify the latest failed KB and match the catalog package to your system.
Should I disable Windows Update permanently?
No. Disabling updates can leave security vulnerabilities unpatched. If you’re troubleshooting, temporarily pause updates only for short testing windows, then re-enable.
Does Windows Update fail more often on custom builds or older hardware?
It can. Older storage controllers, outdated chipsets, and driver incompatibilities can cause repeated staging or rollback. If errors mention driver or setup rollback, focus on the in-place repair or installing a known-good package via the Microsoft Update Catalog.

If Windows 11 isn’t updating, start with the built-in troubleshooter and service checks, then move to cache clearing and component repairs (DISM + SFC). Those three steps resolve the majority of 2024-era update failures.
When the same error keeps returning, use the manual component reset or bypass Windows Update entirely by installing the specific KB from Microsoft Update Catalog—or perform an in-place repair install if the system is consistently rolling back.
