If File Explorer closes or hangs when you access an Android share, first identify which sharing method you’re using. Windows 11 can show a paired Android phone in File Explorer, Phone Link has a separate file-transfer feature, and a network path or mapped drive is a third workflow. Microsoft’s published guidance documents these features and general Explorer troubleshooting, but does not identify a specific cause or confirmed fix for this exact crash.
Identify which Android sharing workflow is failing
Note what you do immediately before Explorer stops responding or closes:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Paired phone in File Explorer: Your Android device appears in File Explorer after you pair it with Windows and enable the mobile-device setting.
- Phone Link transfer: You start a file transfer through Phone Link rather than opening the phone as a device in Explorer.
- Network share: You open a path such as
\deviceshareor a mapped network drive. This is a Windows LAN-sharing setup, not the same feature as showing a paired phone in Explorer.
Record your Windows version and build by running winver, your Android version, relevant app versions, and the exact action that triggers the crash. Those details help distinguish a feature-setup issue from a failure tied to a particular path; the available Microsoft guidance does not establish a root cause without them.
If the phone appears directly in File Explorer
Microsoft Support says that, after pairing, “With Link to Windows, you can seamlessly access and manage your Android mobile device’s files on your PC through File Explorer.” Its setup guidance requires Android 11 or later and Link to Windows version 1.24072.258.0 or later. It also requires pairing the phone and enabling the setting below. See Microsoft’s instructions for setting up and using a phone in File Explorer.

- On your PC, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mobile devices > Manage Devices.
- Confirm the Android phone is paired and turn on Show mobile device in File Explorer.
- Check that the phone and Link to Windows meet the stated minimum versions.
- If you want to test whether this integration is involved, turn off Show mobile device in File Explorer in the same settings and check whether Explorer still crashes. This is a diagnostic isolation step based on the documented setting, not a Microsoft-confirmed crash fix.
If you start the transfer through Phone Link
Phone Link file transfer is separate from opening a paired device in File Explorer, and its stated minimum app versions differ. Microsoft lists Windows 11, Android 10 or later, Link to Windows 1.24032.518.0 or later, and Phone Link 1.24032.156.0 or later for this transfer workflow. Check the versions and instructions in Microsoft’s guidance for transferring files between Android and a PC. Meeting these requirements verifies the documented setup; it does not establish that Phone Link will fix a crash in another workflow.
If you are opening a Windows network share
For a network path or mapped drive, check the Windows LAN-sharing configuration rather than the phone-in-File-Explorer setting. Microsoft’s guidance covers sharing between devices on a local network, but does not prove that a particular Android device is acting as a Windows-compatible SMB host. Follow Microsoft’s network file-sharing and mapped-drive guidance to check that:

Try general File Explorer troubleshooting
Microsoft’s general File Explorer guidance recommends checking for Windows updates and restarting the PC. These are reasonable first checks, but Microsoft does not tie them specifically to an Android-triggered Explorer crash. If Explorer still fails, follow Microsoft’s further File Explorer troubleshooting steps, keeping in mind that they address Explorer problems generally.

Version context may matter: Microsoft’s February 24, 2026 Windows 11 preview update described underlying changes intended to improve Explorer responsiveness in network locations. That note is not a claim that the update fixes this Android-specific crash. See Microsoft’s February 24, 2026 Windows Insider announcement.
Choose a transfer route only after checking its requirements
If your immediate goal is to move files, choose the workflow that matches how you want to access them. The feature requirements and behavior are not interchangeable:
