If Windows 11 shows “0xA00F4271 Media Capture Failed Event” or “Something went wrong” in the Camera app, start with the camera troubleshooter in Get Help, then check camera permissions and compare the Camera app with the app that fails. The error label does not identify one specific cause, so work through the checks below before assuming the camera is faulty.
What does error 0xA00F4271 mean?
0xA00F4271 is associated with the Camera app’s MediaCaptureFailedEvent label. That label reports a camera capture failure; it is not a diagnosis of what caused it. Other codes can appear alongside it in individual cases, but they are not universal explanations for this error. Microsoft’s general camera troubleshooting guide does not list 0xA00F4271 as a distinct error code, so its recommendations are useful checks rather than a guaranteed code-specific fix.

Microsoft lists several possible reasons a camera may stop working, including privacy settings, app-specific problems, outdated or missing drivers, and security software blocking access. Test these possibilities in order rather than changing system settings at random.

1. Run the Windows camera troubleshooter
- Open Get Help from Start.
- Search for the camera troubleshooter and run it.
- Follow the prompts, apply any suggested fix, and test the camera again.
Microsoft recommends the automated camera troubleshooter as the first step for Windows 11.

2. Check camera privacy settings
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Camera.
- Turn on Camera access and Let apps access your camera, if they are off.
- If the failing app is a desktop program, also turn on Let desktop apps access your camera.
A setting managed or disabled by your organization may be controlled by an administrator. Contact them for help rather than trying to bypass the restriction.
3. Compare the Camera app with the app that fails
- Close other apps that may be using the camera.
- Open Start > Camera and check whether its preview works.
- If the preview works, open the affected app and check its selected camera and camera permissions.
Microsoft’s support guidance says, “If the camera works in one app but not another, the issue lies with the app settings.” If the Camera app and other apps all fail, continue with the Windows and driver checks.

4. Install updates and restart
- Open Settings > Windows Update and check for updates.
- Look for optional driver updates, if offered, and install relevant camera updates.
- Restart the PC, then test the camera again.
Restarting is different from waking the PC from sleep. If the issue started after an update, note when it happened before moving on to the driver checks.

5. Update or roll back the camera driver
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Look for the camera under Cameras, Imaging devices, or Sound, video and game controllers.
- Open the camera device’s driver options and check for an update.
- If the failure began after a driver update and Roll Back Driver is available, consider using it.
The rollback option depends on the installed driver. For a built-in camera, follow the driver guidance for your specific PC model; for an external camera, check the camera maker’s support guidance.

6. Check the camera connection or physical controls
- External webcam: Check that its cable is firmly connected, try another USB port, and test the camera on another device if possible.
- Built-in camera: Check for a physical shutter, privacy switch, or keyboard camera control, if your PC has one.
If Windows still cannot use the camera after these checks, contact the PC or camera manufacturer. The error alone does not establish that the hardware has failed.
Choose the next check based on what happens

What to avoid
Do not begin with registry edits or indiscriminate driver removal. Microsoft’s camera guidance focuses on the troubleshooter, permissions, app settings, updates, restart, and driver checks; it does not establish a registry change as the fix for this particular error.
