KB5041865 on Windows 11 24H2 has a known “UI goes white” failure mode that can affect Task Manager. The most common symptom is a blank or washed-out Task Manager window (often white background, missing text, or unreadable controls).

If Task Manager becomes unusable after installing KB5041865, the fastest route is usually to roll back the update. If you need to keep the update for other reasons, you can often restore normal rendering with system repair and GPU/display driver fixes.

What you’re seeing and why it matters

Task Manager is built on Windows UI components that depend on correct rendering behavior from system libraries and your graphics stack. After certain cumulative updates (like KB5041865 on Windows 11 24H2), UI theming and rendering can regress, especially when combined with specific GPU driver versions, high-DPI scaling settings, or display configuration changes.

The impact is practical: you may not be able to end tasks, inspect processes, or troubleshoot performance issues—ironically making it harder to diagnose the root problem.

#1 Best Overall

Before you start: prerequisites and quick checks

  • Confirm the timing: verify the issue started immediately after installing KB5041865.
  • Note your system details: write down your GPU model and current driver version (you may need to use Settings or another tool if Task Manager is broken).
  • Check display scaling: go to Settings → System → Display and note Scale and Display resolution.
  • Restart once: a full reboot (not just closing Task Manager) can clear a stuck UI subsystem.

If you can still open Settings and view your installed updates, you can proceed without Task Manager.

Fastest fix: roll back KB5041865

Rolling back the update removes the immediate trigger. This is usually the quickest way to restore Task Manager’s normal appearance.

Option A: Uninstall the update from Windows Settings

  1. Open Settings (press Windows + I).
  2. Go to Windows Update → Update history.
  3. Select Uninstall updates.
  4. Find KB5041865, select it, and choose Uninstall.
  5. Reboot and check Task Manager.

Option B: If rollback history is available

  1. Go to Settings → Windows Update → Update history.
  2. Check whether you have a Go back or Uninstall option for the relevant update.
  3. Complete the uninstall and reboot.

Gotcha: if too much time passed (or Windows removed the uninstall window), the uninstall button may not appear. If that happens, move to the repair and driver steps below.

Repair Windows system files (DISM + SFC)

Even when the UI break begins after KB5041865, system component corruption can keep the issue alive. DISM repairs the Windows image store; SFC checks and replaces protected system files.

Run DISM and SFC

  1. Right-click Start and select Terminal (Admin) or Windows Terminal (Admin).
  2. Run this command exactly:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

  1. Wait for the restore to finish (it can take 10–30 minutes depending on the system and network).
  2. Then run:

sfc /scannow

  1. Reboot and check Task Manager’s UI.

If SFC reports it fixed corruption, reboot matters—don’t skip it.

Fix graphics/UI rendering: update or reset GPU drivers

White or blank UI symptoms are commonly tied to GPU driver/rendering regressions, especially after a Windows cumulative update changes UI components. The goal is to get your graphics stack back to a known-good state.

Step 1: Update to the latest stable driver

  1. Identify your GPU model (NVIDIA/AMD/Intel) and laptop/Desktop model.
  2. Download and install the latest WHQL/stable driver from the GPU vendor (not just Windows Update).
  3. Reboot.
  4. Test Task Manager again.

Why this helps: vendors often release driver updates that specifically address post-update UI and compositor behavior.

Step 2: If updating doesn’t work, perform a clean driver reinstall

  1. Boot into Safe Mode (recommended if the UI is severely broken).
  2. Use the vendor’s installer or the vendor’s “clean install” option if available (NVIDIA/AMD tools vary by version).
  3. After reinstall, reboot into normal mode and test Task Manager.

Gotcha: Windows can reinstall a driver during setup. If it keeps coming back, temporarily pause Windows Update while you validate Task Manager.

Step 3: Reset display scaling and DPI temporarily

  1. Go to Settings → System → Display.
  2. Set Scale to 100% (or the closest available setting) temporarily.
  3. Keep Display resolution at the native value if possible.
  4. Reboot and check Task Manager.

High DPI + theme changes can expose rendering edge cases.

Try a clean Task Manager state (restart and cache reset)

Sometimes Task Manager’s UI elements fail to reinitialize correctly after an update. A fresh start can restore correct rendering without uninstalling KB5041865.

Restart the app properly

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  2. If Task Manager opens but UI is broken, close it fully.
  3. Restart the PC and try again.

Reset Task Manager view defaults (when text is unreadable)

If Task Manager is visible but stuck in a weird view or theme state, try switching tabs (Processes → Performance → Processes). If the UI stays white across all tabs, use the driver and system repair steps instead.

Workarounds while you wait for a permanent fix

If you need Task Manager functionality right now, these are pragmatic alternatives that usually help even when Task Manager’s theme is broken.

Use the Settings performance tools

  1. Open Settings → System.
  2. Check performance-related pages (device health, startup apps, background app activity).
  3. Use these to approximate what you’d normally use Task Manager for (startup impact, background apps, resource-heavy apps).

Use alternative monitoring utilities

For CPU/GPU/RAM monitoring, use a trusted third-party performance monitor temporarily. Focus on getting basic visibility back while you repair Windows UI rendering.

Disable “Use transparency effects” to test rendering stability

  1. Go to Settings → Personalization → Colors.
  2. Turn off Transparency effects.
  3. Reboot and test Task Manager.

UI translucency and theming can trigger compositor problems after some updates.

Advanced options if Task Manager is still white

If the symptom persists after uninstall attempts, DISM/SFC, and driver changes, you may need deeper reset steps.

Check for additional pending Windows updates

  1. Go to Settings → Windows Update.
  2. Install any available updates (including cumulative previews) that may include follow-up fixes.
  3. Reboot and retest Task Manager.

Reset the Windows theme-related rendering components

  1. Install the latest Windows updates if available (some fixes ride in follow-ups).
  2. Switch theme to a default (e.g., revert to Windows dark/light without custom accent packs).
  3. Restart and retest Task Manager.

If you use custom themes, accent packs, or third-party UI tools, temporarily remove them.

Create a new local admin profile (to isolate profile-specific UI corruption)

  1. Go to Settings → Accounts → Family & other users.
  2. Select Add account and create a new user.
  3. Log into the new account and test Task Manager.

If Task Manager works in the new profile, your original profile likely has corrupted UI settings.

Common mistakes that make the issue worse

  • Only restarting Task Manager without rebooting after system repair. UI subsystems often require a full restart.
  • Updating drivers without addressing scaling. High DPI can keep the UI broken even with an updated driver.
  • Installing multiple cumulative updates back-to-back without testing. If you can, test after KB5041865 changes first.
  • Assuming a reinstall fixes everything without trying DISM/SFC. Broken components can persist across driver updates.

Troubleshooting checklist (when the main fix fails)

Use this order to avoid wasted time. Stop once Task Manager looks correct again.

  1. Uninstall KB5041865 (if the uninstall option exists) → reboot → test.
  2. Run DISM then SFC → reboot → test.
  3. Update GPU driver to the latest stable from the vendor → reboot → test.
  4. Temporarily set Scale to 100% in Settings → System → Display → reboot → test.
  5. Turn off Transparency effects → reboot → test.
  6. Create a new user profile → test in the new account.
  7. If it still fails, check for follow-up Windows updates and consider a repair install only after confirming you can’t roll back.

FAQ

Will uninstalling KB5041865 remove my files?

No. Uninstalling a cumulative update should not delete personal files. Still, before uninstalling, it’s smart to back up important data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if I can’t find KB5041865 in Update history?

Two common reasons: the uninstall window may have expired, or the update wasn’t installed successfully. Check Settings → Windows Update → Update history for the most recent items and their install dates.

Does this affect only Task Manager?

It can. Some systems show issues mainly in Task Manager due to how it renders lists and charts. Others may see broader UI artifacts. If other apps are also affected, driver and rendering components are the right focus.

Could this be caused by a custom theme or accessibility setting?

Yes. Transparency effects, custom themes, and some accessibility display settings can intensify rendering regressions. Temporarily switching to a default theme and reducing transparency is a quick test.

How do I prevent Windows from reinstalling KB5041865 while I test fixes?

Use Windows Update controls to pause updates or use the update pause/block options available in your Windows 11 build. The exact UI varies, but the goal is to keep KB5041865 from reapplying until you confirm the fix.

Bottom Line

If Windows 11 24H2 with KB5041865 makes Task Manager display as a white or blank UI, start with the rollback path—uninstall KB5041865 if the option exists, then reboot and test. If you can’t roll back, run DISM + SFC and then focus on GPU/display driver and scaling/DPI changes.

Most cases resolve after one of: rollback, DISM/SFC repair, or a clean GPU driver reinstall combined with a temporary scaling test. If it persists, isolate the problem with a new user profile and confirm any follow-up Windows updates are installed.
