If a screenshot shows a page shell, missing data, or an incomplete component, waiting for the browser’s load event is not enough. Navigation milestones describe document loading, not whether your app has finished fetching, rendering, or hydrating the content you need. Wait for an app-specific condition—such as the target heading or data becoming visible—then capture.
Why a screenshot can be early even after the page loads
Browser navigation and application readiness are separate. In Playwright, navigation can wait for milestones including commit, domcontentloaded, load, and networkidle. These indicate progress through navigation or network activity; none inherently proves that a particular app component has rendered the expected content. Playwright’s Page API documents these states.

A client-rendered app may still be requesting data or updating the UI after the document loads. Hydration can create a subtler problem: the page appears on screen, but its controls or content are not yet fully wired up. Wait for evidence tied to what the screenshot must show, rather than choosing a pause based only on elapsed time.

Playwright’s Page API says: “'networkidle' – DISCOURAGED consider operation to be finished when there are no network connections for at least 500 ms. Don’t use this method for testing, rely on web assertions to assess readiness instead.” The 500 ms is the API’s network-idle interval, not proof that an app is ready.
Fix the capture in Playwright
Use a locator assertion for the actual content that must appear. The example below waits for a page heading before saving a full-page screenshot; replace the URL, locator, and expected text with values from your app.

If an API response is a useful signal
You can wait for a particular response when it reliably corresponds to the content needed in the screenshot, then still assert that the rendered content is present. A response can arrive before the UI has processed it, and unrelated requests may continue afterward.

});Adapt the URL fragment and expected value to the application. If the response is not a dependable proxy for the exact UI state, use the rendered-content assertion as your readiness condition.
When you are comparing against a visual baseline
Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() waits for two consecutive screenshots to be identical before making its comparison with the baseline. This helps with visual stability, but it does not establish that the correct data has loaded. Assert the target content first when partial rendering is the underlying problem. Capture with Puppeteer after checking readiness
Puppeteer provides Page.screenshot() for capturing a page. Its screenshot guide demonstrates navigation with the networkidle2 option, but network quiet is not a universal signal that your app’s target content has rendered. Check the page-specific condition before calling the screenshot method.

Diagnose what is missing when the capture is taken
- Reproduce the capture and inspect the page at save time. Note whether the missing piece is late data, client rendering or hydration, a lazy-loaded image, animation, or a failed request. Do not assume the cause from the screenshot alone.
- Name the required visual evidence. Choose the heading, text, component, or expected value that must be present for this particular image to count as ready.
- Wait for that evidence. Prefer a locator assertion or equivalent page-specific condition over adding an arbitrary delay.
- If relevant, wait for a specific data response and verify the UI afterward. Use the response only when it reliably represents the data the screenshot needs.
- If the content is present but screenshots still differ, investigate rendering variability. Check animations, image and font rendering, viewport size, browser or platform differences, and full-page lazy loading on the affected page.
Troubleshoot common partial-capture symptoms
The screenshot has the page shell but no data
The document may have loaded before the app’s request and render completed. Wait for the actual data or component to appear. If you wait for an API response, follow it with a check that the expected value is visible.

The content appears, but controls or values are not settled
Consider whether hydration or later client code is changing the page. Wait for an app-specific rendered state that reflects the final content, and investigate whether values are reset after initial display. A visible page alone may not mean client-side behavior is ready.
An image is missing in a full-page screenshot
Check whether it is lazy-loaded and whether the capture reaches the relevant part of the page. A content-ready assertion for the main report does not establish that every below-the-fold image has rendered; verify the image behavior on the target page.

The screenshot varies after the target content is visible
Separate readiness from visual stability. Check ongoing animations, fonts and images, viewport consistency, browser or platform differences, and lazy-loaded content. A stable screenshot comparison can help identify visual changes, but it does not correct a wrong readiness condition.

Does networkidle mean the app is ready?
No. It describes a period without network connections, not whether the particular content you need has rendered.
Should I use a fixed sleep to fix early screenshots?
A fixed sleep does not prove readiness: it may delay fast pages unnecessarily and still be too short on slow runs.
