Fix Website Screenshots That Capture a Cookie Banner Over the Page

Use screenshot-only CSS for a clean image, or dismiss the banner through its intended control when the capture must represent a real consent choice.

Choose the fix based on what the screenshot needs to prove. If you only need a clear image, hide the site-specific banner with screenshot-only CSS. If the image must show the page after a real consent choice, click the intended control—such as Reject or Accept—then verify the banner is gone before capturing. Hiding a banner changes the image, not the site’s consent state.

Choose between hiding the banner and making a consent choice

A cookie notice covering page content can be handled in two different ways, and they produce different evidence:

Need Method What the screenshot establishes
A clean visual capture only Hide the inspected banner with CSS applied to the screenshot. The banner was omitted from the image. It does not establish that consent was saved or that a choice was made.
A capture of a real consent state Click the specific intended consent control, wait for the interface to settle, and verify the result. The page after that interaction, subject to the site’s own behavior and persistence.

Do not click Accept just to clear the image if the intended state is rejection or no choice. For compliance, consent testing, or evidence of user experience, record the actual interaction rather than disguising the banner.

Hide a specific banner in a Playwright screenshot

For visual-only captures, inspect the target page in browser developer tools and identify the narrowest stable selector for the banner. Playwright’s screenshot style option applies CSS for the capture; its documentation describes using it to hide dynamic elements or adjust properties for repeatable screenshots. The stylesheet pierces Shadow DOM and applies to inner frames.

await page.screenshot({
  path: 'page.png',
  fullPage: true,
  style: '#site-specific-consent-banner { display: none !important; }'
});

Replace #site-specific-consent-banner with a selector you confirmed on the site. This is a conceptual snippet within an existing Playwright script: page must already refer to the page you navigated to. If the notice has a separate dimming backdrop, inspect and hide that specific element too. Avoid broad rules such as [class*="cookie"] or [class*="overlay"] unless inspection confirms they match only the banner; they may hide unrelated content.

After capturing, inspect the image at its intended size. Confirm that the page content is unobstructed, no backdrop remains, and unrelated elements were not removed. The result is a presentation-only image, not proof that the site stored a consent preference.

Capture a real consent choice in a test

When the screenshot must reflect a user decision, locate and activate the exact control for the intended choice. Then wait for the banner to disappear or the page to settle, and assert the expected post-interaction state before taking the image.

const rejectButton = page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Reject' });
await rejectButton.click();
await expect(page.locator('#site-specific-consent-banner')).toBeHidden();
await page.screenshot({ path: 'after-reject.png', fullPage: true });

This example assumes the site has a button whose accessible name is “Reject” and that the inspected banner selector is correct; adapt both to the target page. If the site presents its choice in another way, use that actual control and assert the resulting state. A hidden banner alone may not prove which option was selected.

Playwright documentation recommends explicitly waiting for and dismissing a predictable overlay in the normal test flow rather than relying on page.addLocatorHandler(). Locator handlers can be useful for unexpected overlays, but they run before actions or assertions that need actionability checks and can alter focus and mouse state. Keep subsequent actions self-contained and verify the intended outcome.

Choose full-page or element capture for the evidence you need

A full-page screenshot captures the scrollable page as if it fit on a very tall screen. An element screenshot captures a specific element. These options change the capture area; they do not accept or hide a cookie notice. Use full-page capture for a page-wide record, or target an element when that component is the evidence you need. If a banner appears only in the viewport or overlaps the target element, check the actual output rather than assuming the capture mode resolves it.

Use a hosted screenshot service when you need repeat captures

For repeated work, a hosted service can avoid maintaining your own browser setup, but automatic banner handling is not automatically equivalent to screenshot-only hiding. Browserless documents a screenshot endpoint option named blockConsentModals=true, says it covers most major consent platforms, and points to custom selectors when its built-in blocker misses a site: Browserless consent-modal guidance. Its maintained Playwright example tries a short list of common selectors, checks visibility, clicks a matching control, and then captures a full-page screenshot: Browserless Playwright example. Because clicking is a real interaction, check which choice is made and whether that suits your test before using the result as evidence of a particular consent state.

Troubleshoot a banner that still appears or a page that looks wrong

  • The banner remains in a CSS-only screenshot: Reinspect the live page and confirm the selector matches the visible banner. A different component may render the actual notice, or a separate backdrop may still cover the page.
  • Unrelated content disappears: Narrow the CSS selector. Broad class-substring rules can match elements beyond the consent interface.
  • The screenshot is clean, but the test says nothing about consent: That is expected for screenshot-time CSS. Use the intended consent control and assert the resulting state if the interaction matters.
  • A click-based test is inconsistent: Wait for the predictable overlay in the normal flow, use a locator for the intended control, and verify the banner’s post-click state. If using a locator handler for an unexpected overlay, account for possible focus or mouse-state changes.
  • A hosted blocker misses a site: Coverage is not universal. Browserless documents custom selectors as a fallback; inspect the target site and verify the interaction and output.
  • A full-page or element capture still includes the overlay: Capture scope does not change overlay behavior. Decide whether to hide the specific element for a visual-only image or interact with it for a consent-state capture.
