If Windows says “We couldn’t complete the updates. Undoing changes,” the message does not identify what went wrong. Microsoft describes it as a generic update-failure message. Start by finding the failed update’s error code in Update history, then choose a fix that matches that code rather than trying every possible repair.
What the rollback message means
Microsoft Support groups “We couldn’t complete the updates. Undoing changes.” with “Failure configuring Windows Updates. Reverting changes.” as generic messages that can appear when an update fails. The wording tells you Windows rolled back changes; it does not establish whether the cause was a download interruption, a driver, low disk space, or damaged update files. Microsoft’s error guidance recommends using the failed update’s error code to investigate further.

Find the failed update’s error code
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update > Update history.
- Find the update that did not install and note its error code.
- Use that code to select a relevant next step from the table below or Microsoft’s guidance.
For Windows 10, the settings layout may differ by version; use Windows Update’s update history to identify the failed update and its code. Do not infer a cause from the rollback message alone.
Match the error code to a targeted next step
| Error code or pattern | What Microsoft associates with it | Relevant next step |
|---|---|---|
| 0x80240034 | The operation did not complete because the download was interrupted. | Retry the update when the download can complete without interruption; consult Microsoft’s error guidance if it continues. |
| 0xC1900101-family | Usually a driver error, in the context of the indicated upgrade errors. | Check available disk space, update relevant third-party drivers, disconnect extra hardware, check Device Manager for driver problems, and repair system files if appropriate. |
| 0x80073712 | A file needed by Windows Update is likely damaged or missing. | Use Microsoft’s DISM instructions to repair system files. |
| 0x80070070-family | Insufficient space to install the upgrade. | Free space on the drive, then retry the upgrade. |
These are examples, not diagnoses for every rollback. Follow the steps associated with the code you actually see; a step listed for a driver or storage error is not a universal fix. Microsoft’s error page also describes built-in Windows Update troubleshooting and other case-specific steps.

If the code does not identify a clear fix
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter if Microsoft’s guidance recommends it for your case.
- Disconnect nonessential hardware when troubleshooting an upgrade, particularly when the error points to a driver issue.
- Use Microsoft’s system-file repair guidance only when it fits the error or symptoms.
- If installation or upgrade problems continue, contact Microsoft Support with the error code and the update name.
Microsoft’s guidance for this message does not establish a need for a paid repair utility or replacement hardware.

Microsoft states that free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes for Windows 10 ended after October 14, 2025. Microsoft also says the PC will continue to work and recommends moving to Windows 11. That end-of-support date is separate from an update rollback: the message itself does not prove that Windows rejected the update because the operating system is unsupported. See Microsoft’s Windows upgrade and installation guidance for the applicable details.
