Why Valorant freezes or crashes on PC (common causes)
Freezes usually point to a performance bottleneck (GPU/CPU spikes), a driver issue, or an overlay/plugin conflict. Crashes are more often tied to corrupted game files, unstable drivers, or anti-cheat/permission problems.
| Symptom | Typical cause | First thing to try |
|---|---|---|
| Game freezes mid-round | Overlay conflict, unstable driver, CPU spikes | Disable overlays + update GPU driver |
| Black screen then crash | Fullscreen optimizations, driver TDR, corrupted files | Turn off fullscreen optimizations + verify files |
| Instant crash on launch | Corrupt install, missing dependencies, permission issues | Repair/verify + run as admin |
| Stutters after a few matches | Background apps, memory pressure, overheating | Clean start + check thermals |
| Disconnects, packet loss, rubber-banding | Network instability, DNS/route issues | Test connection + reset network |

Restart PC and power-cycle your network
A full restart clears stuck processes that can interfere with anti-cheat and rendering. If the crash correlates with networking (disconnects), unplug your router/modem for 30 seconds and reconnect.
Disable full-screen video recording, stream overlays, and DVR
If you use OBS, NVIDIA GeForce Experience, AMD Adrenalin recording, Xbox Game Bar capture, or Discord overlays, temporarily disable them. Conflicts are a common reason for freezes.
Close CPU/RAM hogs
Close browser tabs running heavy scripts, launchers with web overlays, and software that injects into games (RGB control apps, “performance” overlays). Even one offender can cause spikes that look like hangs.

Valorant is lighter than many shooters, but it still needs stable drivers and headroom. On Windows, avoid running at extreme resolutions if your GPU is borderline.
- Free space: keep at least 10–15 GB free on the drive Valorant is installed on.
- Thermals: if CPU/GPU is overheating, you’ll see stutters and crashes.
Run a quick thermal sanity check
Use Task Manager to open Performance and watch CPU/GPU utilization. If temps are climbing rapidly during matches, fix cooling before chasing software tweaks.
Verify game files and repair the install
A corrupted file can crash Valorant at launch or during asset loading. Riot’s launcher includes a verify/repair workflow.
Verify via Riot Client
- Open the Riot Client.
- Go to Library.
- Find VALORANT, click the gear icon (or more options), and choose Repair or Verify (wording can vary by launcher version).
- Wait for the process to finish and restart the PC if the launcher requests it.
Re-download if repairs keep failing
If “Repair” repeatedly loops or doesn’t complete, uninstall VALORANT and reinstall. Keep your Riot login handy because you’ll need to sign in again.

Update GPU drivers the right way
Outdated or unstable GPU drivers are the #1 real-world cause of freezing and GPU-related crashes. The goal is not just “update”—it’s installing a clean, matching driver.
Download the latest driver for your exact GPU
Use NVIDIA or AMD’s official download pages for your card model. For example, NVIDIA’s driver versions often increment frequently; install a current “Game Ready” (NVIDIA) or “Adrenalin Edition” (AMD) version compatible with your GPU.
Do a clean install (recommended)
- Uninstall the old driver using the installer option Perform a clean installation (if available) or use DDU in Safe Mode if you’re experienced.
- Install the new driver and reboot.
- After reboot, launch Valorant and test one match (Custom or Practice is fine).
Disable risky driver tweaks
If you modified settings like “Low Latency Mode,” “Thread Optimization,” or custom performance profiles, revert them to defaults and retest. Driver-level overrides can cause unexpected behavior.
Adjust Windows power, fullscreen optimizations, and game mode
Windows settings can cause stutter, freezing, and “alt-tab black screen” behavior. These changes are safe and reversible.

Game Mode and Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling
On many systems, leaving these at defaults works, but toggling can help stability. If you changed them earlier, set them back to a known state, then retest.
- Settings → Gaming → Game Mode: turn it On.
- Settings → System → Display → Graphics: check related GPU scheduling options if present in your build.
Turn off overlays and conflicting software
Anything that injects UI into the game process can trigger freezes or crashes. Start with the usual suspects and keep them off until you confirm stability.
Common offenders to disable
- Discord: Overlay
- Steam: In-game overlay
- NVIDIA: In-game overlay via GeForce Experience
- Xbox Game Bar: Screen recording / game capture
- Overwolf and similar apps
- RGB lighting software with game profiles
- Afterburner/RTSS overlays (if you use them for FPS graphs)
Test clean after changing overlays
After disabling overlays, fully close the apps from the system tray and reboot once. Then launch Valorant and play one round to confirm the crash is gone.

Fix network-related stalls and sudden disconnects
Network issues don’t always crash the client, but they can cause severe stutter, rubber-banding, and timeouts that feel like freezing.
Quick connection tests
- Run a speed test and check for packet loss, not just latency.
- Switch from Wi-Fi to Ethernet if possible.
- In Windows, turn off VPN/proxy temporarily.
Reset network stack (Windows)
- Right-click Start → Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run these commands one by one:
ipconfig /flushdnsnetsh winsock resetnetsh int ip reset
- Reboot the PC.
DNS swap as a stability move
If your ISP DNS is flaky, switching can reduce handshake delays. Common picks are Cloudflare (1.1.1.1 / 1.0.0.1) or Google (8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4).
Change in-game video settings to stabilize performance
If your freeze happens during specific map moments or heavy utility rounds, you likely need to reduce spikes. Start conservative; you can always scale up later.
Use stable, common competitive settings
- Display Mode: Fullscreen (or Fullscreen Exclusive if your system behaves better with it)
- Resolution: match your monitor native resolution first
- V-Sync: Off (for competitive latency) unless you see tearing + instability
- Anti-Aliasing: Off or low
- Texture Quality: Low to Medium
- Shadows: Off (shadows are expensive)
Cap FPS to reduce stutter
Uncapped FPS can cause GPU spikes on menus and heavy scenes. Try a cap such as 180 FPS on a 240 Hz monitor, or 141 FPS on a 144 Hz monitor, and keep it consistent.
Turn off experimental/high-variance settings
If Valorant shows any “experimental” toggles on your build, set them to default and remove them from the equation while troubleshooting.

Advanced: check Windows Event Viewer and Valorant logs
When the game freezes or crashes, you need evidence. Windows and Valorant often leave useful timestamps in logs that tell you whether it’s a driver crash, missing file, or something else.
Read Windows Event Viewer errors
- Press Win + X → Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs → Application.
- Look for errors or Faulting application entries around the time of the crash.
- Record the Faulting module name (often points to a DLL/driver).
Check Valorant logs
Valorant writes logs that can show startup failures and rendering/connection issues. Look in your Valorant installation folder for a Logs directory, then open the most recent files and match timestamps to your crash.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- If you see errors referencing rendering or dx, treat it as a GPU/driver/graphics setting issue.
- If you see permission or dependency errors, focus on run-as-admin and repair.
Reinstall or reset Vanguard-safe steps
Riot Vanguard is part of the anti-cheat flow, and issues there can produce “it launches then fails” behavior. You typically don’t need to reinstall Windows, but reinstalling Valorant can clear broken components.
Reinstall VALORANT (clean install)
- Uninstall VALORANT from Windows settings.
- Restart the PC.
- Reinstall VALORANT from Riot Client.
- Update GPU drivers again if you changed them during troubleshooting.
Don’t stack third-party anti-cheat overlays
Avoid any “anti-lag” or “anti-cheat bypass” tools. They can trigger bans or repeated crashes. Use only supported software.
When nothing works: escalation checklist
If the problem survives every step, you’ll want a tight diagnostic loop. This checklist reduces guessing.
- Confirm GPU driver version and Windows build (write them down).
- Test Valorant on a fresh Windows user profile (if available) to rule out user config corruption.
- Temporarily disable XMP/overclock on RAM and CPU boosts (RAM instability can cause game crashes).
- Remove custom video settings and revert NVIDIA/AMD control panel settings to default.
- Run Windows memory diagnostics if crashes correlate with memory load.
If you end up contacting Riot Support, include: the exact crash time, Event Viewer faulting module name, your GPU model, driver version, and whether it happens on all maps or only certain modes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Valorant crashes after a Windows update—what should I do?
Update your GPU driver to the latest version compatible with your system, then re-verify Valorant files. If the crash started immediately after the update, also check Event Viewer for driver-related fault modules.

My FPS drops to zero then the game freezes. Is it a network issue?
Zero FPS and a hard freeze is more often GPU/CPU stalling or a driver crash than pure network. Still, if you also see disconnects, test Ethernet vs Wi-Fi and check packet loss.
Should I reinstall Windows?
Only as a last resort. In most cases, a clean GPU driver install, disabling overlays, verifying files, and fixing power/fullscreen settings resolve freezing/crashing without a full OS reset.
Does running Valorant as administrator help?
It can, especially if permissions are blocking files or causing anti-cheat modules to fail. Use it alongside a file verify/repair step rather than relying on it alone.
Could RAM XMP/overclock be the cause?
Yes. Unstable RAM overclocks commonly trigger intermittent crashes or freezes under game load. Test with XMP/overclock disabled and confirm stability.
Final Thoughts
Most Valorant freezing and crashing on PC can be fixed by addressing three categories: corrupted files, graphics/driver instability, and background overlay conflicts. Do the quick solutions first, then progress to driver clean installs and Windows compatibility/power tweaks.
If you still crash, treat logs and Event Viewer like your checklist—not a mystery. Once you identify whether the fault points to a driver module, permissions, or rendering, the fix becomes much more targeted.
