There is no universal menu path or universal meaning for the setting: on one board it can affect USB devices in legacy environments, while another implementation may also change whether devices appear in a boot-device list.
First identify the problem. Firmware keyboard input, USB access for older software, and booting from a USB drive are separate functions and may require different settings.

What Legacy USB Support does
Legacy USB Support is a firmware compatibility setting for making USB devices usable in legacy or pre-operating-system contexts. Its exact behavior depends on the motherboard and firmware. For example, the Supermicro BH4SRG manual says that disabling the setting makes onboard legacy USB devices available only to EFI applications. The ASUS PRO WS WRX80E-SAGE SE WIFI BIOS manual describes a different implementation: Enabled supports USB devices in legacy operating systems; Disabled leaves them usable for BIOS setup only and removes them from the boot-device list; Auto enables support if devices are detected at startup. These are model-specific examples, not universal definitions. See the Supermicro BH4SRG manual and the ASUS BIOS manual.
The setting is most relevant when firmware or older software cannot use a USB device through its normal USB support. It is not a general-purpose switch that guarantees every USB device will work, and changing it does not automatically make a flash drive bootable.

Find the setting for your exact computer
Menu names and locations differ across computers, motherboards, and firmware versions. Use the system or motherboard model number to find its official manual; do not assume instructions for another board apply. ASUS, for example, notes that BIOS screens and steps can vary by model in its USB boot instructions.
- Identify the system. Check the computer’s model label or, for a custom-built PC, the motherboard model and revision.
- Open BIOS/UEFI setup. Use the startup key or method documented by the computer’s manufacturer. The key and timing vary by system.
- Locate the USB setting. Look in a section such as Advanced, USB Configuration, or a similarly named menu; consult the manual if the label is not obvious.
- Choose the documented value. If the menu offers Enabled, Disabled, or Auto, follow the instructions for that board and the specific problem you are solving.
- Save and restart. Use the firmware’s documented save-and-exit control, then check whether the original symptom has changed.
Choose the fix that matches the symptom
A USB keyboard does not work in setup or before the operating system loads
Check the model’s Legacy USB Support setting first. If the keyboard problem occurs with an older operating system that lacks USB legacy-device support, look for a separate Port 60/64 Emulation option. The Supermicro BH4SRG manual says enabling I/O port 60h/64h emulation provides complete legacy USB keyboard support for operating systems that do not support legacy USB devices. That description applies to the documented board, not every system.

Try a rear motherboard USB port if available, and avoid changing several USB options at once: changing one setting at a time makes it easier to identify which control mattered. If the keyboard still fails, check the computer or motherboard support guidance for that model.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA USB drive is missing from the boot menu
Legacy USB Support is only one possible factor. Check whether the firmware detects the drive, whether the drive was prepared as bootable media for the intended system, and whether the selected boot mode matches how the media was created. Then check the boot menu or boot priority and try another supported port if the manual recommends it.

Intel’s guidance for the Intel Server Board S1200SP family treats Legacy USB Support, USB Boot Priority, Boot Mode, and correct drive connection and preparation as separate checks. Its instructions are specific to that server-board family; do not assume its media-preparation details apply to every PC. The general distinction is also reflected in the Intel troubleshooting guide.
An older operating system loses USB input after startup
Look for the setting that addresses the missing capability rather than toggling every USB option. Port 60/64 emulation concerns legacy keyboard input. xHCI/EHCI hand-off concerns transferring USB controller management to an operating system that lacks the relevant hand-off support. Vendor manuals document these as separate controls. The Oracle x86 server manual, for example, lists EHCI hand-off and Port 60/64 emulation separately.

Do not confuse these three firmware controls
| Control | What it concerns | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| Legacy USB Support | A board-specific compatibility option for using USB devices in legacy or pre-OS contexts. | It is not another name for legacy boot mode, and its precise effects vary by firmware. |
| Legacy boot mode or CSM | The method firmware uses to start an operating system, often distinguished from UEFI boot. | It does not, by itself, describe USB keyboard emulation. |
| USB boot menu or boot priority | Which detected bootable device is offered or selected for startup. | Selecting a drive does not create bootable media or change the meaning of Legacy USB Support. |
UEFI USB boot is not synonymous with legacy USB support: UEFI Specification 2.10 describes USB device paths that the UEFI Boot Manager supports. The UEFI 2.10 Boot Manager specification addresses boot-device paths; it does not define every motherboard’s Legacy USB Support menu label. ASUS’s boot instructions likewise treat choosing a USB flash drive from the boot menu as a separate action.

When to leave the setting alone
- If your USB keyboard and devices work where you need them, there may be no reason to change the setting.
- If the goal is to boot an installer, start by confirming the drive is bootable and selected in the boot menu; do not assume enabling Legacy USB Support alone will make it appear.
- If the manual’s explanation does not match your symptom, check for the separate setting that controls boot mode, controller hand-off, or keyboard emulation.
- Record the original value before changing firmware settings so you can restore it if the change causes a new problem.
