Twitch currently recommends this for an issue affecting some Opera GX users, but its notice does not identify a specific version or say the update fixes every case. If updating does not help, use a private window, test with extensions off, and then check browser data, VPN routing, your connection, and whether the problem affects one stream or all of Twitch.
Start with the quickest checks for Twitch not working on Opera GX
- Update Opera GX. Twitch’s supported browsers guidance says Twitch supports the latest desktop version of Opera and Opera GX. Its known-issues notice specifically recommends updating Opera GX because some users have been unable to load Twitch; Twitch says it has seen reports that updating resolved the issue for some people. The notice gives no affected version or issue date, so treat this as the first check, not a guaranteed fix. After updating, reload Twitch.
- Open Twitch in a private window. If it works there but not in your regular window, an extension, cookie, or profile setting may be involved. This comparison narrows the possibilities; it does not identify the cause by itself. Opera describes private browsing and other page-loading checks in its FAQ.
- Temporarily turn off extensions, including ad blockers. Reload Twitch after disabling them. Twitch says browser extensions can change how its site loads or behaves. If playback returns, re-enable extensions one at a time to identify the conflict, then check whether the responsible extension has an update. Twitch does not endorse third-party applications it did not create or support; see its browser extensions guidance.
- Clear cache and cookies, then restart Opera GX. Clearing site data can sign you out, so make sure you can sign back in. Twitch lists this after the extension check in its supported-browser troubleshooting sequence, and Opera also recommends clearing browsing data when pages are unavailable.
- Temporarily disable VPNs or other traffic rerouting. Reload Twitch without them. Twitch recommends testing without a VPN or software that reroutes requests; Opera’s FAQ also recommends disabling its VPN when a page is unavailable.
- Compare another network or device. Try Twitch on a different device or connect the same device through another network, such as mobile data. If the result changes, the original device or network becomes a more likely place to investigate.
Use the symptom to narrow down the cause
Before changing more settings, check how broadly the problem occurs: does Twitch fail to load, does video buffer or stop, or does only one channel fail? The playback error code, if one appears, can also point toward the relevant category.

What common Twitch error codes mean in Opera GX
| Error | Twitch’s described causes | Useful next checks |
|---|---|---|
| 1000 (not supported) | An outdated browser, extensions, or a stream feature that the browser does not support or that is unavailable in your region. | Update Opera GX, disable extensions—especially ad blockers—and test a private window with extensions disabled. Check whether the stream is available in your region. |
| 2000 (not supported) | An unstable or weak network, router or modem connectivity, or extensions. | Check network stability, restart the modem or router, set video quality to Auto, and test with extensions disabled or in a private window. |
| 3000 (decode) | An outdated browser, hardware acceleration, or extensions. | Update Opera GX, try turning hardware acceleration off, update GPU drivers, restart the browser, and test with extensions disabled. |
| 7005 (DRM) | DRM being disabled, a browser lacking required DRM support, or extensions. | Check protected-content or DRM settings, try another device, and disable extensions. Twitch’s instructions name settings in Chrome, Firefox, and Edge, but do not provide an Opera GX menu path, so there is no verified Opera GX path to follow here. |
These categories and checks come from Twitch’s playback issue troubleshooting guide. For error 3000, change one setting at a time and test again so you can tell which step mattered.
If Twitch keeps buffering
Buffering can reflect an unstable connection or a delivery problem, not just a browser fault. Twitch’s viewing guidance gives recommended download-speed ranges, not guaranteed minimums or a measurement of your connection:
#1 Best Overall
- Blazing-fast WiFi 7 boosts tri-band throughput up to 12000 Mbps with 320 MHz channels of 6 GHz band, Multi-Link Operation (MLO) and 4K-QAM
- Powerful wired network capacity of up to 20G with one 2.5G WAN port and seven 2.5G LAN ports.
- High-performance quad-core 2.0GHz CPU with robust cooling, 2GB RAM and eight internal antennas providing up to 3000 sq. ft. of range.
- Smart Home Master makes it easy to set up functional subnetwork (up to 3 SSIDs) for IoT devices and VPNs
- ROG-exclusive Gaming Network streamlines Triple-Level Game Acceleration setup and connections through convenient SSIDs
| Viewing quality | Twitch’s recommended download speed |
|---|---|
| 1440p60 (2K) | 9–18 Mbps or higher |
| 1080p60 | 7–12 Mbps or higher |
| 720p60 | 3–6 Mbps or higher |
| 480p | 1.1–3 Mbps or higher |
| 360p | 0.7–1.5 Mbps or higher |
These ranges are from Twitch; the page does not state a publication year. If your stream buffers, set its quality to Auto and compare playback on another network before assuming your hardware needs an upgrade.
If only one Twitch channel fails
Try several other channels before changing browser or system settings. Twitch says a broadcaster’s setup can cause a stream-specific problem, and playback can also be affected by how a stream is delivered to a device. If other channels work normally, the issue may be limited to that stream.

Check Opera GX settings without changing more than necessary
Opera documents a built-in ad blocker with a site-specific switch and exceptions, as well as a VPN and a Twitch video popout feature. To test whether ad blocking or routing is involved, temporarily turn off the built-in blocker for Twitch and separately disable any ad-blocking extensions or VPN. Change one control at a time, reload the page, and restore controls that did not affect playback. Opera’s features documentation describes these controls; video popout is a viewing feature, not a fix for a page that will not load.

Cookie settings can also affect sign-in or site behavior. Opera lets users accept cookies, block third-party cookies, clear site data on exit, and set site-specific exceptions. If Twitch works in a private window, first compare your extensions and profile settings rather than broadly changing cookie preferences; the available guidance does not establish that a particular cookie setting causes the Opera GX loading issue.

When to contact Twitch Support
If the problem affects multiple streams and remains after the browser and network checks, contact Twitch Support. Include the Opera GX version, operating system, steps that reproduce the problem, screenshots, and any relevant browser console error logs. Do not assume you need to replace a router or graphics card, or buy a driver utility: Twitch’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checks and settings changes, not equipment purchases.
